Yes—you can create a custom background for an existing video without a green screen. The main choice is whether to have an AI editor replace the backdrop from a prompt, or remove the background first and then put a separate image or video behind the subject. Those are different workflows, and the right one depends on how much control you need.
Choose the right kind of background edit
A background remover isolates the person or object in the foreground. You then place a new image, color, or video beneath that cutout in an editor. A prompt-based backdrop replacement asks an AI tool to change the scene behind the subject as part of the edit. Removing a background does not necessarily generate a replacement scene.

- Use prompt-based replacement when you want to describe a new setting and have the tool create the backdrop.
- Use removal and compositing when you already have a background asset, want to choose one from a library, or need more control over the layers.
- Use chroma key when the footage was recorded against a consistent green or blue screen. A screen is useful for this specific technique, but it is not a universal requirement for AI background editing.
No independent quality benchmark establishes that one of the tools below produces the best results. Compare their workflow, clip limits, access requirements, refinement controls, export options, and the time you can spend checking the whole moving clip.

Runway’s Change Backdrop app takes a video clip, a description of the scene you want, and generates a result with the new backdrop behind the subject. Runway states that the app accepts video up to five seconds and costs 15 credits per second. It says Apps are available to Standard plan users and above, and that Change Backdrop is available in Unlimited Explore mode without consuming credits while using that mode. These access, duration, and credit details can change; check the current Runway Change Backdrop page before planning a project.

- Prepare a short source clip. Choose a well-lit shot with a clear subject and as little distracting motion or obstruction as possible. Runway recommends high-quality input to help avoid morphing and artifacts.
- Open Change Backdrop and upload the video. Keep the five-second input limit stated on the app page in mind; do not confuse it with limits for other Runway tools.
- Describe one specific scene. Use a short, direct prompt that identifies the setting and lighting. For example: “A quiet modern library with warm afternoon window light.” Avoid asking for several competing scene changes at once.
- Generate and inspect the result. Watch the whole clip, not only a still frame. Check the outline around hair, hands, clothing, and moving objects, and look for the subject or background changing shape between frames.
- Revise if needed. If the result warps, try a simpler prompt or a cleaner, better-lit source clip. Runway says Apps can be chained by downloading one app’s output and uploading it into another app.
Runway also describes Edit Studio as a prompt-based way to transform existing traditional or generated footage, including removing or replacing backgrounds. Its help article says it can work across a single shot or multi-shot sequence up to 30 seconds. That is a separate experience and limit from the five-second Change Backdrop app; see Runway’s Edit Studio help article for its workflow.
Remove the background and add a scene in CapCut
CapCut documents a workflow that removes the background from ordinary footage, then lets you generate a background image with its AI image function or choose an asset from its built-in library. Its desktop instructions are:

- Import the video into a project and select the clip.
- Choose Video > Remove BG > Auto removal.
- Add a background beneath the isolated subject: generate an image with CapCut’s AI image function or choose an image or other asset from its background library.
- Use the custom-removal controls if areas need refinement. For green- or blue-screen footage, CapCut instead recommends Chroma key and selecting the key color.
- Preview the full clip and export it. Transparent export and output controls are documented, but the options available can depend on the export route and product version.

Remove the background in Adobe Express, then composite a replacement
Adobe Express documents background removal, not a generated replacement scene in the cited help article. Treat it as the isolation step: after removing the background, add and arrange a separate replacement asset in the editor.

- Add the replacement image, color, or video as a separate layer behind the isolated footage, then review and export the composite.

How to choose and check a result
Before committing to a tool, check the constraints that affect your particular clip. CapCut’s own selection guidance advises comparing ease of use, output quality and resolution, features such as chroma key, and free-tier limits; that is vendor advice, not an independent product ranking.

- How the scene is made: Prompt-based replacement can generate a backdrop from a description. A removal workflow needs a replacement layer, which may be generated separately or selected from available assets.
- Edge refinement: Inspect hair, fingers, transparent objects, motion blur, and anything crossing in front of or behind the subject. Use custom removal or chroma key where supported if automatic isolation misses areas.
- Export needs: Confirm resolution and whether you need a transparent subject export or a finished composite. Available export settings can depend on the tool, version, and export route.
- Full-motion consistency: Watch the clip from beginning to end for flickering edges, holes, halos, changing shapes, or a background that appears to slide or distort.
Common problems and fixes
The subject looks warped or changes shape
For Runway Change Backdrop, use a higher-quality, well-lit input and simplify the prompt to one clear scene and lighting setup. Review motion throughout the output; a clean opening frame does not prove the whole clip is clean.
Parts of the original background remain
In a removal workflow, refine the mask with the available custom-removal controls. If the footage was shot against a consistent green or blue screen, try chroma key and select the screen color instead of relying only on automatic removal.

The new scene is not behind the subject
Check the layer order. In a removal-and-composite workflow, the replacement must sit beneath the isolated subject. Background removal by itself does not create or place a new scene.
The expected option or export setting is missing
Check that you are using the documented product version and export route, and verify current account, plan, duration, and credit requirements on the vendor’s page. These interfaces and limits may change.
Copyright and publishing checks
Changing a backdrop does not grant rights to the footage, music, images, or other assets in the project. Use material you own or are licensed to use, and check the relevant platform’s current policies before publishing. Do not assume an AI-generated scene makes copyrighted source footage permissible.
