AI can help people finish some tasks faster, but that does not mean it inevitably increases workload—or that it reliably reduces pressure. The evidence so far points to a more useful question: what happens to the time it saves? Workers may regain time, clear backlogs or face new output targets. Which outcome follows depends on the task, the worker and the workplace.
How much work is AI already changing?
Generative AI use at work is substantial but not universal. In nationally representative U.S. surveys, 27% of employed respondents said they had used generative AI for work at least once in the previous week as of late 2024. The same study estimated that AI assisted with between 1% and 7% of all work hours, while reported time savings amounted to 1.4% of total work hours. Does faster work automatically create more pressure?
No general causal rule is established. A faster task can mean less time spent on that task, but pressure depends on what happens next: whether the saved time is protected, used to handle existing work, or converted into higher targets. Staffing, quality checks and management expectations are plausible parts of that equation; the studies below do not show that one response follows everywhere.

Completing tasks more quickly, resolving more customer issues, spending fewer hours on email, working fewer hours outside the regular schedule and feeling less stressed are different outcomes. A gain in one does not establish a gain—or a loss—in the others.

What workplace studies have found
Email time and work outside regular hours
A six-month field experiment across 66 firms and 7,137 knowledge workers randomly assigned access to an AI tool. In the experiment’s second half, treated workers who used it spent two fewer hours per week on email and reduced work outside regular hours. Researchers did not detect changes in the quantity or composition of tasks from individual-level access. The result suggests that saved time did not simply become more measured task volume in that setting; it does not establish what every employer will do with time savings. Customer-support output and worker experience
In a study of 5,172 customer-support agents, AI assistance increased issues resolved per hour by 15% on average. The effect was uneven: less experienced and lower-skilled agents gained in both speed and quality, while the most experienced and highest-skilled agents saw small speed gains and small quality declines. This is a task- and workforce-specific result, not a forecast for all jobs or a finding that every worker should be assigned more cases. Performance on tasks the AI could handle
A preregistered experiment with 758 knowledge workers tested realistic consulting tasks. On tasks within the tested AI capability frontier, users completed 12.2% more tasks and did so 25.1% faster on average. The study also describes a “jagged” capability frontier: AI can help on some tasks and worsen performance on others. A speed gain is therefore not a dependable substitute for checking whether a particular task suits the system and whether its output is accurate. Why task fit and quality matter as much as speed
AI capability does not rise evenly across all kinds of work. A system may be useful for one task and unreliable for a neighboring one, so organizations need to assess performance at the level of actual work rather than treating “AI-assisted” as a single category. The OECD’s 2025 synthesis reports positive productivity patterns across studies while emphasizing that effects depend on context and that errors and overreliance remain risks. - Check the task: Identify where the system performs reliably and where human judgment remains necessary.
- Keep quality visible: Track errors and review needs alongside completion speed or output volume.
- Account for experience: Gains can differ between newer and more experienced workers, including in quality as well as speed.
What workplace leaders should measure
“Productivity” is too broad to show whether AI is easing or intensifying work. A clearer assessment separates outcomes and makes the destination of saved time explicit.
- Speed: How long does a task take, including review and correction?
- Quality: Are outputs accurate and useful, and how much human checking is required?
- Volume: Are workers completing more tasks, or merely completing the same work faster?
- Working time: Do email time and work outside regular hours change?
- Pressure and stress: Do workers report a different experience, rather than managers inferring it from output alone?
- Time allocation: Is saved time returned to employees, used to address existing backlogs or reflected in new targets?
Keeping these measures distinct helps reveal whether a speed gain is translating into better service, shorter working time, more output or a faster pace. It also makes trade-offs clearer: a higher case count, for example, is not an unqualified improvement if quality falls.

Can AI reduce stress instead?
It can, in some settings, but the evidence does not settle the question for every workplace. A 2025 study using German survey data found a persistent negative relationship between exposure to AI and robots and worker stress. That finding suggests technology may reduce stress and work pressure in the setting studied; it should not be treated as a global causal estimate or as proof that every AI implementation relieves pressure. Taken together, the findings support neither inevitability—AI makes work more pressurized—nor a blanket promise of relief. The effects depend on what the system can do, who is using it, what counts as a successful outcome, and how the organization handles the time it saves.
