Use a search engine to find and inspect original pages; use an AI assistant to synthesize information, explain a topic, compare options, or create a draft. For changing facts, make sure the assistant is actually searching the web. For important claims, open its citations and verify them against the original source.
Which tool should you use?
| Task | Best starting point | Why | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find a particular page, official notice, or exact source | Search engine | It presents pages you can inspect directly. | Check the publisher, date, and whether the page answers your question. |
| Check current news, market developments, schedules, or other changing facts | Search engine, or an assistant with web search enabled | Retrieval can bring in current web material, but assistant features and access vary. | Open the original source and confirm its date and geographic relevance. |
| Understand a topic or combine information from several sources | AI assistant, with search when recency matters | An assistant can turn material into a synthesized explanation. A Microsoft Research study observed more use of Bing Copilot than Bing Search for higher-complexity knowledge-work tasks; that finding is limited to the products and study context. | Follow citations and verify substantive claims. |
| Compare options or create a first draft | AI assistant | It can organize criteria into a comparison or produce a draft quickly. | Confirm the criteria, facts, and any quotations against original sources. |
| Make a consequential decision or quote a source | Authoritative source pages; use an assistant only as a helper | Generated answers and citations can be wrong or incomplete. | Read the primary source directly and preserve its context. |
These are workflow tradeoffs, not a universal score. The useful questions are how fresh the information must be, whether you need to see the sources, how much synthesis you want done, whether you need a generated artifact, and how much verification the result requires.

Why the distinction matters
Search helps you find and inspect sources
A search engine is a strong starting point when the task is locating a specific document, checking an official page, or seeing what a source says in its own context. You choose which result to open and can assess its publisher, date, and relevance yourself.
An assistant turns information into an answer
An AI assistant can explain, compare, summarize, and draft. Some assistants can retrieve web pages and then generate a response from them, combining source discovery with synthesis. That convenience does not make the generated answer equivalent to reading the cited pages.

Current information depends on web retrieval
ChatGPT’s Help Center distinguishes responses made without search, which are based on training, from search or deep research, which can access and cite current web sources. Microsoft describes Copilot web search as useful for emerging topics and current trends, while noting that availability can depend on license, account, and organizational settings. In either product, do not assume web retrieval is enabled just because you are using an assistant.
When freshness matters, check that the tool is actually retrieving web information, then inspect the cited page’s publication or update date and geographic scope. Search engines can also surface older or irrelevant pages, so retrieval alone is not proof that a fact is current.

Why citations still need checking
A citation is a route to evidence, not a guarantee. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Google also cautions that generative AI can invent answers and recommends checking factual responses using Google and other resources.
For each material claim, check that the cited page actually supports it, that the source is credible for the question, and that the date and context fit. Research on answer engines describes the same basic pattern—retrieving documents and using a language model to compose a self-contained answer—and notes that hallucinations and citation inaccuracies can be difficult to detect. A polished explanation can therefore conceal a weak or mismatched source.

What comparisons can—and cannot—establish
Microsoft Research’s 2024 study compared real-world Bing Copilot use with Bing Search sessions. It found more use of the generative service for higher-cognitive-complexity knowledge-work tasks. That is evidence about observed use of those products, not proof that assistants are more accurate or universally better.
A 2026 comparative study reports that Google Search and generative AI services differ in the domains, source types, query intents, and freshness of information they consult. This supports a practical distinction between information ecosystems, not a universal winner. The available findings do not provide a directly comparable, general-purpose accuracy figure for search engines versus AI assistants.

A reliable workflow for using both
- Decide what you need. If you need a page or original evidence, start with search. If you need an explanation, comparison, or draft, an assistant can help structure the work.
- Check retrieval when recency matters. Confirm that the assistant is using web search; access and settings vary by product and account.
- Use synthesis as a starting point. Ask the assistant to organize the question or summarize findings, but treat the result as a draft rather than the final authority.
- Open the citations. Verify that each cited source supports the claim beside it, and check its publisher, publication or update date, and geographic scope.
- Go to primary sources for consequential claims. Read official or original material directly, and quote its wording rather than relying on a generated paraphrase.
OpenAI’s practical guidance puts the distinction simply: “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.”
