An AI assistant is usually defined by how a person uses it: through a conversational or embedded interface. An AI agent is usually defined by what the system does: pursuing a goal across a workflow, using tools and deciding bounded next steps. The terms overlap—a product can be an assistant to its user and an agent within a task—so look at its workflow control, permissions and oversight, not just its label.
What is the difference between an AI assistant and an AI agent?
“Assistant” describes a user-facing role; “agent” describes a pattern of goal-directed work. An assistant may answer a question, draft text or help a person explore an idea. An agent-style system may also gather context from connected tools, choose among permitted actions, check whether a task is complete and hand control back when it needs approval or cannot proceed.

These are useful descriptions, not mutually exclusive technical categories. Google Cloud describes assistants as agents designed to collaborate with users, while Anthropic notes that there is no universally agreed definition of an agent. In practice, the distinction depends on how much control the system has over a workflow.
How to tell whether a system is acting as an agent
Tool access by itself does not settle the question. A system might call a search tool to answer one prompt while leaving every subsequent decision to the user. A more agent-like system manages a series of steps toward a goal and has some authority to select and execute the next step within set limits.

OpenAI’s practical guide defines agents as systems that independently accomplish tasks on a user’s behalf. In its framing, a simple chatbot or single-turn application that does not control workflow execution is not an agent. That is OpenAI’s operational definition, not a universal standard.
An agent is a configured system, not simply a particular model. OpenAI’s API documentation describes an agent as a unit with a model and instructions, with optional components such as tools, guardrails, handoffs, MCP servers and structured outputs. Which capabilities are enabled—and what the system is permitted to do—shapes its behavior.

Assistant-oriented and agent-oriented patterns
| Aspect | Assistant-oriented pattern | Agent-oriented pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Responds to a person’s request through a direct interface | Pursues a goal through an orchestrated workflow |
| Workflow control | The user often chooses and performs the next step | The system may choose the next bounded step and check for completion |
| Tools | May answer without external tools or use them in response to a request | Uses connected tools to gather context or take permitted actions |
| Trigger and persistence | Often prompt-led and turn-by-turn | May run across several steps or start on a schedule or event |
| Oversight | The user directs each interaction | Instructions, permissions, review and handoffs constrain actions |
These patterns are comparison points, not a classification test. A conversational assistant can use tools, and an agent can require human supervision. The important question is whether the system controls part of the workflow, and within what boundaries.
When should you use an assistant instead of an agent?
Choose a conversational assistant for open-ended or one-off work
Regular chat is often a better fit when you want to brainstorm, ask an isolated question, explore alternatives or revise an answer interactively. You can evaluate each response and decide what to do next without configuring a repeatable process.

Consider an agent-style workflow for repeatable, structured tasks
An agent may be more useful when a task follows a defined process, recurs on a schedule, starts in response to an event or needs approved connections to work systems. OpenAI Academy’s workspace-agent guidance describes this pattern in terms of a trigger, a process that can include skills, and tools or systems the agent can connect to. A task that is vague, unusually consequential or hard to verify may still need close human direction rather than broader automation.

- Goal: What result should the system deliver, and how will it know the task is complete?
- Tools and permissions: Which information can it read, and which actions can it take? Grant only the access the task requires.
- Approval points: Which actions should wait for a person to review or confirm them?
- Exceptions and handoff: What should happen if information is missing, a tool fails or the system is unsure?
- Verification: How will a person check the result, especially before an external or consequential action?
Agent behavior should be bounded by instructions, permissions and oversight. The label “agent” does not mean a system is fully autonomous, and it should not be taken as evidence that its actions are reliable without review.
Why definitions of AI agents differ
“AI agent” is still used in different ways across the field. Anthropic’s study, Measuring AI agent autonomy in practice, says, “There is no agreed-upon definition of what an agent is,” and uses a narrower study definition: an AI system equipped with tools that allow it to take actions. OpenAI and Google Cloud emphasize goal pursuit and workflow behavior in their descriptions. Those differences are why behavior and control are more useful to compare than labels alone.
