AI features are not disqualifying on Google Play, but shipping them responsibly takes more than relying on a model’s built-in filters. Developers need to understand Play’s rules for generated content, provide a way to report offensive output, test realistic and adversarial use, give reviewers access to every AI feature, and keep monitoring after launch.
How do I make sure my AI app follows Google Play policies?
Start with the app’s output and user experience, not just the model or API you use. Google Play’s AI-Generated Content policy covers user-prompted generative content, including central chatbot interactions and generated images or videos. Applicable Play policies still apply to the rest of the app.

Developers are responsible for preventing restricted or harmful generated content and must provide an in-app way for users to report or flag offensive AI output. Treat those reports as input to filtering and moderation rather than as a box to check: review them, identify patterns, and adjust safeguards where needed.
A practical implementation synthesis of Google’s policy and safety guidance is to:

- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Just the app you’re looking for: Millions of apps means millions of ways to get things done, learn something new, and maybe even meet someone special.
- Map each generative feature, including its inputs, outputs, and where it appears in the user journey.
- Define prohibited content and how the app handles a report, from user submission through review and follow-up.
- Test ordinary requests as well as prompts that try to bypass safeguards or produce harmful content.
- Make every AI feature available to reviewers, including premium or geographically restricted features.
- Keep records of safety tests, reports, moderation decisions, failures, and subsequent changes.
What safeguards should an AI app use?
Google’s August 2026 safety guidance says not to depend only on a model’s native safety filters. Add app-level checks for inputs and outputs, and evaluate whether they work together with the model’s protections. A refusal from the model is not a substitute for checking what the app actually displays or enables.
Test adversarial prompts, not only expected requests. For apps that generate or edit images, Google specifically highlights edge cases such as explicit image edits, deepfakes, and attempts to create non-consensual intimate imagery. Retain documentation of the safety prompts and edge cases tested so the team can track coverage and investigate failures.
Safety work continues after release. Monitor user feedback and failed prompting attempts, look for recurring ways people reach harmful output, and update filtering or moderation as needed. As Ron Aquino, Senior Director, Trust and Safety, Chrome, Android and Play, wrote in Google’s August 25, 2026 Android Developers Blog post: “Generative AI features are dynamic and can be less predictable, so safety isn’t just a one-time check when you submit your app.”

What should I test before publishing an AI app on Google Play?
Test the whole app, not just a model’s responses. Google’s core app quality guidance recommends representative emulator coverage across common form factors and hardware and software combinations, testing the latest Android version, and using a small number of physical devices for key combinations. It does not require testing every device on the market.
Cover the app’s real workflows
Exercise all major screens and user flows, including the creation or media workflows that use AI. Confirm that the feature behaves as intended from input through the displayed result, and test the paths users actually take through sign-in, access controls, and any relevant purchase flow.
Vary device and network conditions
Test interruptions such as incoming calls and notifications, and vary network availability and other temporary device conditions. These checks help surface problems that a successful prompt-response test in a stable environment will miss. Choose a representative device set based on the app’s form factors and key hardware or software combinations rather than assuming one emulator or one phone is enough.

Check the listing and user feedback
Review store-listing assets for an accurate representation of the app, and investigate feedback for reproducible bugs. A gap between what the listing promises and what the app delivers is a quality issue, even if the generative feature itself passes its safety checks.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How should I prepare AI features for Play review?
Google’s August 2026 guidance recommends giving reviewers access to all AI features, including features behind premium access or geographic restrictions. If review access depends on credentials, payment, or location, provide a workable way for reviewers to reach the relevant functionality rather than leaving a key feature inaccessible.
Keep a record of the safety prompts and edge cases tested, along with the issues found and the changes made in response. That gives the team a useful basis for maintenance and helps explain how safeguards are intended to work. The guidance does not establish how reviewers will decide every borderline design, so access and documentation should support—not replace—policy-compliant behavior in the app.

What do Google Play’s quality metrics mean for an AI app?
Google says it evaluates app quality using both user metrics and in-app evaluation. Signals include uninstall or user-loss rate, daily and monthly active users, ad load, usability, performance, and content or feature depth relative to peers.
Some published user-metric thresholds apply to eligibility for particular beta details-page treatments and tools, not to universal app approval or ranking. Google Play’s 2026 guidance gives these thresholds:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Metric | Published threshold | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| User loss rate | Below 5% | One eligibility threshold for certain beta details-page treatments and tools. |
| DAU/MAU | Above 8% | One eligibility threshold for certain beta details-page treatments and tools. |
| Measurement period | At least 24 days in a 30-day period | Google says sufficient installs and engagement are needed to assess metrics accurately over this period. |
Meeting those figures does not guarantee approval, a particular ranking, or success. They describe eligibility criteria for specific treatments and tools alongside technical quality requirements; they are not a general scorecard for whether an AI app is policy-compliant.

What publishing and verification changes should developers check?
Google’s policy timeline says Android developer verification protections went into effect on September 30, 2026 for apps distributed through participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand on certified Android devices. The timeline reported that 99% of Play apps had been registered automatically and directs developers to check Play Console for any remaining registration steps. That percentage does not establish that every developer’s obligations are complete. Check the official Google Play policy timeline and Play Console for current requirements, since rollout details can change.
Google’s May 7, 2026 Android Developers Blog update described Play Policy Insights in Android Studio, SDK Index insights, Play Integrity API improvements, pre-review checks, and publishing workflow improvements planned for later in the year. Treat announcements and planned changes according to their stated availability; don’t assume a planned workflow update is already available.
