AI Agents That Reuse Your OAuth Token Can Break Least Privilege

An AI agent that reuses a broad OAuth token may inherit more authority than its task needs. Learn which token restrictions and delegation controls reduce that risk.

An AI agent that reuses your OAuth access token may be able to act with the authority that token carries—not just identify you. If that token grants broad access, the agent’s effective permissions may exceed what its specific task requires. The practical safeguard is to authorize the task narrowly and enforce those limits at the resource server. This is an architectural implication of OAuth security guidance, not a claim that published research has measured agent-related incidents.

Why a reused OAuth token can give an agent too much authority

OAuth access tokens convey authorization to protected resources. A bearer token can generally be used by whoever possesses it, subject to the token’s restrictions and the resource server’s checks. So when an agent receives a user’s broad token, its effective boundary may be the permissions granted to that user rather than the narrower needs of the agent’s task.

The IETF’s OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice says: “The privileges associated with an access token SHOULD be restricted to the minimum required for the particular application or use case.” RFC 9700, published in January 2025, states a general OAuth principle; it does not report measured incidents involving AI agents. Read RFC 9700.

What to restrict when issuing or using a token

Least privilege is more than choosing a short list of scopes. Review the token’s permitted destination, resources, and actions, then check that the resource server enforces those boundaries.

  • Privileges or scopes: grant only what the specific task needs, rather than reusing a token with the user’s full set of grants.
  • Audience: limit which resource server can accept the token, and have that server verify that the token was intended for it.
  • Resources and actions: where the authorization system supports it, constrain which resources the token can reach and what operations it can perform.
  • Token handling: limit exposure and protect token storage. A restrictive token still depends on the agent implementation and resource server behaving as intended.

Reduce the harm from copied or leaked tokens

Scope and audience limits reduce what a token can authorize; sender-constraining helps reduce the usefulness of a copied token. RFC 9700 recommends sender-constrained access tokens as a way to mitigate misuse of stolen or leaked tokens. It also says refresh tokens issued to public clients must be sender-constrained or use rotation. These mechanisms are complementary: none substitutes for granting only the authority a task requires.

Use token exchange as a delegation building block—not a complete policy

OAuth 2.0 Token Exchange, defined in RFC 8693 (an IETF Proposed Standard published in 2020), describes how to request and obtain security tokens, including tokens involving impersonation and delegation. An implementation may use exchange to obtain a token suited to a delegated operation instead of simply passing along a broad credential. The protocol does not determine what permissions an AI agent should receive, and it does not mean every OAuth provider supports every agent-delegation flow. Read RFC 8693.

Agent-specific delegation proposals are still drafts

Two IETF Internet-Drafts describe emerging work on agent identity and delegation. They are proposals, not published standards or settled requirements.

How to assess an agent’s OAuth design

  1. Trace the credential: establish whether the agent receives a user access token, a refresh token, or a separately issued token.
  2. Inspect its authority: identify the token’s privileges, audience, reachable resources, and permitted actions.
  3. Check enforcement: verify that the resource server validates audience and other applicable restrictions instead of relying on the agent to self-limit.
  4. Review replay protections: determine whether access tokens are sender-constrained and whether public-client refresh tokens are sender-constrained or rotated.
  5. Evaluate delegation: if token exchange is used, confirm that the resulting token reflects an explicit authorization policy for the task. Exchange alone does not define that policy.

There is no established statistic in the cited RFCs and drafts for how often AI agents inherit broad OAuth tokens or how frequently this causes privilege failures. The real exposure depends on implementation, resource-server checks, token storage, task boundaries, and authorization policy.
