An agent may retain access through standing roles, application permissions, refresh paths, or delegated grants that outlive the task. Give each agent a distinct, owned identity; limit authority to its task and context; and make shutdown a defined lifecycle action that you can verify.
Why access can outlast the task
A task ending is an execution event, not necessarily an identity or authorization event. If an agent used a standing role, reusable credential, application grant, or refresh mechanism, that access may remain available after the run stops. A completed run also does not establish that downstream services have invalidated every token or grant.

Shared credentials and blurred human-agent identities make it harder to determine which principal performed an action or to disable one agent without affecting others. Microsoft and AWS guidance recommends identifiable agent identities, lifecycle controls, and clear attribution. Microsoft’s identity best practices for Entra Agent ID describe lifecycle-managed identities and time-limited privilege; AWS’s Agentic AI Lens guidance on agent identity and permission management recommends minimum task permissions and short-lived credentials.
Choose the right identity model for the work
Interactive work performed on behalf of a signed-in person and autonomous background work have different authority requirements. Some systems need both modes for different operations; do not give an agent one broad identity simply to cover every case.

| Consideration | Interactive or delegated agent | Autonomous or workload agent |
|---|---|---|
| Principal and context | A signed-in user provides context; preserve that user’s permission boundary. | The agent’s own identity acts without a user present. |
| Typical permissions | Delegated permissions limited by what the user is authorized to do. | Application permissions restricted to the background task. |
| Lifecycle owner | User consent and changes to the user’s access are relevant. | A named owner, job schedule, task identity, and decommissioning process govern access. |
| Audit record | Record both the user and agent actor where the platform supports it. | Record the agent identity and workflow or run context. |
| Main risk | Letting the agent assume or cache the user’s credentials. | Granting broad standing access for convenience. |
Microsoft and AWS describe the distinction between user-delegated and autonomous operation; the exact implementation depends on the platform. See Microsoft’s Entra Agent ID identity guidance, AWS’s agent identity guidance, and Google Cloud’s workload identity federation documentation.
Build revocation into the identity and credential lifecycle
1. Inventory each agent and its access
Maintain a record of each agent’s owner or sponsor, identity type, data and tools it can reach, grants, credential sources, refresh mechanisms, and lifecycle owner. Prefer a separate identity for each logical agent so that reviewing or disabling one does not ambiguously affect another. Microsoft recommends agent registration and sponsorship; AWS guidance emphasizes dedicated identities and permission review. Google Cloud documents per-agent identity rather than shared service accounts in its workload identity guidance.
2. Match authority to the task and context
For user-facing actions, use delegated authorization and pass signed user context to downstream services where supported. For scheduled or background work, use a workload identity with only the application permissions required for that job. A narrow read task is not a reason to give a background agent tenant-wide access. AWS details permission boundaries and IAM conditions in its agent identity and permission management guidance; Microsoft describes lifecycle-managed agent identities and just-in-time privileges in its Entra Agent ID best practices.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Minimize credential lifetime and exposure
Prefer short-lived, task-scoped credentials issued through platform identity or a broker. Keep reusable secrets out of prompts, model reasoning context, logs, and general configuration. Short-lived tokens reduce exposure, but they do not replace a shutdown path: an agent can still have a standing role, another credential, or an unexpired token to address.
AWS recommends short-lived credentials and permission boundaries. Microsoft’s Azure SRE Agent documentation describes single-use action tokens for individual tool invocations and credentials kept outside the reasoning context; those details apply to that service, not to agents generally. See the Azure SRE Agent security documentation.
4. Define what “finished” means operationally
Document a suspension or decommissioning procedure that disables the agent identity or workflow and invalidates credentials and tokens at the relevant downstream services. Review refresh tokens, application grants, role assignments, queued actions, and integrations rather than assuming one global control revokes everything. There is no universal cross-vendor teardown command established by the guidance; implementation depends on the identity provider, tools, and services involved.

Microsoft Security’s guidance on securing AI agents with identity and access controls calls for lifecycle management that includes suspension and decommissioning procedures and a fast shutdown mechanism that actually invalidates credentials and tokens.
Verify access, activity, and data residue separately
Revocation should be auditable. Record enough context to identify what an agent could do and what it actually did, then review both permission drift and usage.
- Log the agent identity, delegated user when applicable, effective role or scope, tool, action, timestamp, and run or correlation ID.
- Monitor token use and permission changes; investigate denial events before expanding permissions.
- Review grants periodically and look for unused access or drift from the intended task boundary.
- After shutdown, verify the identity and relevant downstream credentials or grants are no longer usable.
Microsoft’s Entra Agent ID best practices, AWS’s Agentic AI Lens, and Google Cloud’s workload identity documentation discuss attribution, least privilege, and identity management.

Data retention is a separate control from authorization. Revoking a token does not delete tool outputs, conversation history, summaries, or stored memory. Azure SRE Agent documentation, for example, distinguishes single-use action tokens from conversation threads retained until manually deleted; those threads can include serialized tool messages and summaries. Set retention and deletion rules for the stores your agent uses, and verify deletion separately from access revocation. See Microsoft’s Azure SRE Agent security documentation.
A practical shutdown checklist
- Identify the agent’s owner, identity, workflow, and downstream services.
- Stop or disable the workflow so it cannot initiate additional calls or queued work.
- Disable or suspend the agent identity and revoke its relevant roles, application grants, delegated grants, and credentials at their issuing and downstream systems.
- Invalidate or wait out outstanding tokens according to the platform’s controls; check refresh paths and integrations rather than relying only on an access-token expiry.
- Review audit logs for the agent’s final activity and confirm expected access failures after deactivation.
- Apply separate retention or deletion rules to conversation, tool-output, summary, and memory stores.
- Record the decommissioning action and update the inventory so the identity is not silently reused.
The exact UI path and revocation sequence vary by platform and service. The important operational test is whether the identity, its renewal mechanisms, and its downstream grants have actually lost authority—not whether the agent’s run merely appears complete.
