Free checklist: 10 AI agent briefing mistakes
Read each item against your draft. Not every brief needs every detail: include what matters to the task, and make consequential boundaries explicit. Prompting guidance varies by model and platform, so treat this as a practical starting point rather than a universal formula.

No clear task or goal
“Do this for me” leaves the agent to guess both the work and what success means. State the specific task and the outcome you need. OpenAI advises identifying the task clearly and providing necessary context; Anthropic recommends clear, explicit instructions. See OpenAI’s prompt guidance and Anthropic’s prompting best practices.

Assuming shared context
Give the agent relevant background, source material, definitions, and facts it cannot safely infer. OpenAI describes context as a way to supply information outside a model’s training data or focus it on selected resources. Anthropic cautions against prompts that assume shared context. See OpenAI’s prompt engineering guide and Anthropic’s context engineering article.

Vague or conflicting directions
Replace fuzzy wording with concrete requirements, and resolve conflicts by stating which instruction takes priority. If order matters, give the steps in sequence. Anthropic recommends specificity and ordered instructions when completeness or sequence matters; its guidance is in Effective context engineering for AI agents and Prompting best practices.
-
No deliverable definition
Say what the agent should return: for example, a short report, a table, edited text, or a set of recommendations. Specify the audience and any important format or length requirements. Anthropic explicitly recommends stating output format and constraints in its prompting guidance.

Constraints and priorities left implicit
Make the scope and trade-offs visible. List required inclusions, exclusions, and which requirements matter most when they cannot all be met. OpenAI emphasizes necessary context and focus areas, while Anthropic advises making constraints explicit. See OpenAI’s prompt guidance and Anthropic’s best practices.

Unbounded autonomy
A broad instruction such as “review my emails and take whatever action is needed” gives an agent too much room to interpret both the task and outside content. Name the permitted actions and require confirmation before consequential steps such as sending, deleting, purchasing, or changing access. OpenAI warns that broad directions can make it easier for malicious third-party content to mislead an agent and recommends specific instructions and review of important actions. See OpenAI’s prompt-injection guidance.

Unclear tool expectations
If the work depends on tools, state which tools are relevant, what each is for, and when to use it. Explain the permitted actions and any limits. Anthropic says tools should have clear intended uses and unambiguous inputs; OpenAI describes tools as ways for agents to gather context and take actions within guardrails. See Anthropic’s context engineering article and OpenAI’s practical guide to building agents.
-
No useful examples or task sequence
For repeated or complex work, include a small number of representative examples or number the steps. Examples can show the expected pattern; a sequence can clarify what must happen first. OpenAI documents few-shot examples, and Anthropic recommends diverse canonical examples rather than an exhaustive set of edge cases. See OpenAI’s prompt engineering guide and Anthropic’s context engineering article.

-
Brittle rule overload
Do not try to prewrite a rule for every possible branch. A long catalogue of edge cases can make instructions fragile and harder to follow. Give the minimum set of information that fully defines expected behavior, then add examples or steps where they clarify the work. Anthropic discusses this risk in Effective context engineering for AI agents.

No completion check, safeguards, or recovery path
Tell the agent how to recognize a finished task, what to report if it is blocked, and when it must stop and ask. For actions with meaningful consequences, specify where human review is required. OpenAI’s agent guide describes recognizing completion, correcting actions, halting, and returning control when needed; its safety guidance recommends reviewing important actions. Prompting can also be refined iteratively. See OpenAI’s agent guide, its safety guidance, and its prompt engineering guide.

A reusable AI agent task briefing template
Copy this structure and fill in only the parts relevant to your task. For a complex workflow, split the work into focused stages rather than adding every conceivable rule.
Task: [The specific work to complete.]
Goal: [What a successful result enables or answers.]
Context and sources: [Relevant facts, files, links, or trusted materials.]
Deliverable: [Format, audience, length, and required contents.]
Constraints and priorities: [What must be done, what to avoid, and priority order.]
Tools and authority: [Tools to use, permitted actions, and actions requiring confirmation.]
Completion check: [How to tell the work is complete; what to report if blocked.]
Example: [Optional representative input and output, if it clarifies the expected pattern.]
This template is a starting point, not a requirement to make every prompt long. OpenAI advises clear tasks, context, and focus; Anthropic recommends the minimum high-signal information that outlines expected behavior. See OpenAI’s prompt guidance and Anthropic’s context engineering article.
Set safety boundaries beyond the brief
A well-written task does not by itself make an agent safe. Emails, web pages, documents, and other third-party material may contain malicious instructions. Define which sources and actions are in scope, limit access to information needed for the task where possible, and review consequential actions before confirming them. OpenAI explains these risks in Understanding prompt injections.
Also consider whether an agent is suitable for the workflow at all. OpenAI’s practical guide to building agents recommends validating that the work fits an agent, particularly when it requires contextual decisions, difficult-to-maintain rules, or unstructured information. A clearer brief can help define the work; it cannot guarantee an identical result across different models or platforms.
