An AI-agent sandbox is only as secure as the resources exposed to it. Agent-generated code can use readable files, injected credentials, installed tools, and any network route available to its environment. A sound design therefore combines least-privilege filesystem and tool permissions, tightly controlled outbound connections, protected credential handling, and isolation between users or jobs. Defaults differ between local and hosted products, so verify the effective policy for every workspace and run rather than assuming the word “sandbox” guarantees the same boundary everywhere.
What an AI-agent sandbox actually protects
A sandbox is an execution boundary around code produced or directed by an AI agent. It can limit which files the code can read or change, which commands and tools it may invoke, where it can connect, and which other workloads it can see. It does not make unsafe inputs harmless, and it does not automatically hide anything that the environment itself exposes.

OpenAI’s official sandbox security guidance puts the core rule plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” Treat that as the starting point for threat modeling. If a private repository is mounted read/write, the agent can potentially alter it. If a cloud token is placed in an environment variable that generated code can inspect, the token is within the agent’s reach. If unrestricted internet access is available, data can leave through destinations you did not intend.

Which permissions must be scoped?
Filesystem access
Begin with the narrowest useful directory, not a user’s entire home folder, a monorepo containing unrelated projects, or a shared data mount. Give read access only to inputs the task requires and write access only to an output directory or a working copy that can be discarded. A documentation task might need a few source files and a separate export folder; it rarely needs SSH configuration, cloud credentials, or every repository on a developer workstation.
Read-only access is a meaningful reduction in impact, but it is not complete protection. Code that can read confidential material may still copy it into generated output, logs, an error report, or a network request. Review artifacts before moving them to a less-trusted system.
Tool and process access
Commands are another permission boundary. Disable package managers, compilers, browser automation, shell utilities, or administrative tools unless the workflow needs them. If a task requires a command, restrict its arguments and working directory where the product allows it. A tool that can write files, invoke another process, or open a socket can expand the effective permissions beyond the apparent file mount.
Effective policy, not advertised policy
Check the policy that is active for the exact product surface, workspace, operating system, and run. Local and cloud modes may have different defaults, and a repository-level setting can differ from an organization-level setting. Record the effective mounts, environment variables, allowed tools, persistence behavior, and network rules as part of run metadata so an incident can be reconstructed.
How should you restrict an AI agent’s permissions?
- Describe the task boundary. List the input paths, output paths, commands, APIs, and duration required. Mark anything involving personal data, production systems, source-code signing, or financial operations as high impact.
- Create a disposable workspace. Copy or check out only the files needed for the job. Keep the original repository and shared drives outside the mount. Prefer an ephemeral workspace that is destroyed after the run.
- Set explicit rights. Make input directories read-only when possible. Give write permission to a dedicated output path, and prevent traversal into parent directories or adjacent users’ workspaces.
- Remove ambient credentials. Start with an empty environment, then add only the connection material needed for the run. Do not inherit a developer’s shell profile, credential files, agent sockets, or cloud metadata endpoint.
- Allow only required tools. Use an allowlist for executables and tool calls. Require approval for operations that modify external systems, publish artifacts, or change access controls.
- Inspect the resulting policy. Test from inside the sandbox which paths, processes, environment variables, and network destinations are actually reachable. A configuration file is not proof that enforcement succeeded.
- Expire the environment. Delete temporary files, revoke short-lived credentials, and destroy the workspace when the job ends or is cancelled.
GitHub’s documentation for its local Copilot sandbox describes read/write access to the current working directory by default, with additional repository-related access in specified cases. That is a product-specific example, not a universal default. Treat every other path and permission as untrusted until the current documentation and a local test confirm otherwise.

Can an AI agent read secrets in its sandbox?
Yes, if the secret is exposed to the runtime. An agent-generated program can inspect environment variables, files, process arguments, mounted secret volumes, command history, and diagnostic output available to it. A secret manager protects storage and delivery, but it cannot make a value invisible after you inject that value into an environment the agent can read.
Keep application credentials out of the runtime
The safest pattern is to keep high-value application keys in a trusted service and have the sandbox request narrowly defined operations through that service. For hosted sandboxes, OpenAI’s guidance recommends vault-backed secrets and a proxy that supplies real credentials only for approved hosts. The proxy can enforce method, destination, tenant, and rate limits without revealing the underlying key to generated code.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For sandbox SDK workflows, use the provider’s native secret system rather than putting credentials in prompts, instructions, task files, manifests, or generated artifacts. Prompt text is not a secret store, and a file included for convenience can be copied into output or committed to source control.
Separate environment credentials from application credentials
Connection credentials used to attach an execution environment should be distinct from keys that authorize business actions. OpenAI’s self-hosted guidance notes that an environment key may be readable by agent-generated code while permitting only environment connection; it advises keeping the application API key outside the sandbox. Apply the same separation to source-control, database, deployment, and payment credentials.
Scope every token to the minimum operations and lifetime. Prefer a token that can read one repository or submit one review over an account-wide key. Use short expirations, audience restrictions, and server-side revocation. Rotate or revoke immediately when logs, output files, a process dump, or an unexpected network request suggests exposure.

Prevent accidental disclosure
- Redact secrets from logs, stack traces, test snapshots, and generated reports.
- Prevent the sandbox from reading credential directories, SSH agents, cloud instance metadata, and browser profiles.
- Scan outbound artifacts and pull requests for keys before release.
- Use separate credentials for development, testing, and production; never “temporarily” mount a production key for convenience.
OpenAI’s Agents SDK guidance summarizes the operational rule: “Treat sandbox credentials as runtime configuration, not prompt content.”

How should network access be restricted?
Default to no outbound network access, then allow the smallest set of destinations required by the workflow. An endpoint allowlist should include the hostname, port, protocol, and purpose. Consider whether DNS, package registries, object storage, telemetry, and update services are genuinely necessary; each creates another path for data exfiltration or supply-chain compromise.
Identify where each connection originates
The component making a request determines which firewall or allowlist must enforce it. OpenAI distinguishes executor MCP connections, which originate from the user’s environment, from remote MCP connections, which originate from OpenAI’s service. An allowlist written for one origin may do nothing for the other. Document the source network, egress gateway, identity, and logging location for every integration.
Constrain requests beyond destination
Destination filtering alone is not enough when an approved service can perform broad actions. Put a trusted proxy in front of sensitive APIs and enforce permitted methods, paths, payload sizes, and tenant identifiers. Block redirects to unapproved hosts, restrict DNS resolution where feasible, and log request metadata without recording secrets or private document contents.
Test egress and failure behavior
From inside the sandbox, verify that an unapproved domain, raw IP address, alternate port, and redirect are blocked. Confirm that a denied request fails closed rather than silently falling back to general internet access. If the task does not need a network, test that DNS and socket creation fail entirely.

How do you isolate agent workloads?
Isolation is about preventing one user, job, or tenant from seeing another’s files, credentials, processes, caches, or network identity. OpenAI’s self-hosted guidance warns that agents sharing an environment can access the same files, credentials, and other resources. Therefore, tenancy and job separation are security controls, not merely deployment preferences.
Choose the isolation unit
- Per-run isolation: strongest separation for untrusted or high-impact tasks; create a fresh environment and destroy it after completion.
- Per-user isolation: useful for interactive development, but still requires cleanup and protection against one job reading another job’s leftovers.
- Shared worker isolation: efficient for low-risk workloads only when filesystem, process, credential, and network boundaries are independently enforced.
Do not assume that separate directories on one host are equivalent to separate environments. Check process visibility, temporary directories, package caches, mounted volumes, container privileges, kernel exposure, and residual storage. Prevent concurrent jobs from reusing a workspace unless ownership and cleanup are guaranteed.
Handle persistence deliberately
Ephemeral execution reduces the time available to exploit leftovers, but it can also remove useful debugging evidence. Export only the logs and artifacts required for review, scrub them for secrets, and store them in a controlled location. If persistence is required, encrypt the storage, bind it to the correct tenant, and define retention and deletion rules before enabling it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What belongs outside the sandbox?
Keep control-plane functions in trusted application infrastructure whenever possible: authentication, billing, audit logging, approval decisions, recovery, and tool routing. The sandbox should perform bounded computation, file manipulation, package work, and artifact generation—not decide who is authorized to run a job or hold the master credential that authorizes production changes.
Use a narrow interface between the control plane and execution plane. The control plane can issue a signed task description, provision a temporary workspace, inject scoped runtime configuration, collect results, and terminate the run. The sandbox should not be able to rewrite its own policy, grant itself new tools, disable audit logging, or approve its own outputs.

Hosted versus local sandboxes: what to compare
There is no universal “most secure” choice established by the available guidance. Compare the actual boundary and operating model rather than the marketing label.
| Dimension | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Compute operator | Who administers the host, hypervisor, images, and patching? What evidence and incident process are available? |
| Workload separation | Are runs isolated per user, tenant, or job? Can processes, caches, or temporary files cross those boundaries? |
| Filesystem mounts | Which directories are mounted by default, with what read/write rights, and for how long? |
| Network defaults | Is egress disabled, filtered, proxied, or unrestricted? Where do executor and remote-tool connections originate? |
| Credential injection | Are secrets kept in a vault or proxy, or copied into an environment the agent can inspect? |
| Persistence | What survives a run, who can retrieve it, and how is deletion verified? |
| Policy enforcement | Can users override restrictions? Are changes reviewed and logged? |
| Audit and recovery | Can you reconstruct tool calls, file changes, approvals, and outbound requests without exposing sensitive content? |
OpenAI documents both hosted and self-hosted sandbox patterns, while GitHub documents local and cloud Copilot sandbox surfaces. These are vendor-specific controls, not interchangeable guarantees. GitHub describes its cloud sandbox as an isolated, ephemeral Linux environment and marks it public preview; its documentation also says local sandboxing is off by default in the described Copilot surfaces and that local and cloud policy settings are distinct. Because defaults and preview status can change, verify the current settings for the exact product surface before relying on them.
Security checklist for every agent run
- Task scope names the exact input and output paths.
- Workspace is disposable or has an explicit retention owner.
- Read/write permissions are narrower than the host user’s permissions.
- Unneeded tools, shells, package managers, and administrative capabilities are disabled.
- Application credentials are outside the sandbox or delivered through a constrained proxy.
- Environment-connection credentials are separate, short-lived, and minimally scoped.
- Outbound traffic is denied by default and approved destinations are documented.
- Connection origin is known for every local executor or remote tool.
- Artifacts, logs, and diffs are checked for secrets and private data before export.
- Authentication, approval, billing, audit, and recovery remain in trusted infrastructure.
- Credentials can be revoked quickly and the workspace can be destroyed on demand.
Common failures and recovery actions
The agent changed files outside the project
Stop the run, preserve the audit record, and revoke any credentials available to the process. Compare the changed paths with the intended mount, then tighten directory permissions and process capabilities before retrying in a fresh workspace. Do not continue from a possibly tampered environment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A secret appeared in output or logs
Assume exposure. Revoke and rotate the credential, invalidate sessions that used it, remove copies from artifacts and caches, and determine whether egress logs show transmission. Fix the injection path—usually by moving the operation behind a proxy—before restoring access.
An approved endpoint became an exfiltration route
Disable the integration, inspect request metadata and payload handling, and narrow the proxy’s methods, paths, and data fields. An allowlisted hostname is not a blanket authorization to send arbitrary private data.
Two jobs saw each other’s data
Terminate both environments, preserve evidence under controlled access, and treat the event as a tenancy incident. Review shared volumes, temporary directories, caches, process visibility, and cleanup races. Re-enable workloads only after isolation is demonstrated with cross-tenant tests.
Bottom line
Sandbox security is a chain: filesystem permissions limit what code can read and change; credential design determines which protected systems it can reach; network policy controls where data can go; and workload isolation prevents one job from inheriting another’s resources. Build the boundary from explicit, testable controls, keep the control plane trusted, and verify the effective policy separately for every local, hosted, and cloud execution surface.
