AI Agent Memory: How Assistants Carry Your Preferences Forward

Persistent AI memory can save repeated setup by carrying selected context into later interactions, but it is neither a perfect transcript nor the same across products. Here is what to check about sources, scope, controls, retention, and availability.

An AI assistant with persistent memory can carry selected preferences and context into later conversations, so you do not have to repeat useful details each time. It is not a perfect transcript: what gets remembered, how long it stays available, where it applies, and how you can manage it depend on the product.

What persistent memory does—and what it does not do

Memory gives an assistant a way to use relevant information from earlier interactions later. That may include a preference, a recurring constraint, or context that makes future answers more useful. For example, OpenAI suggests asking, “What do you remember about me?” or telling ChatGPT, “Remember that I am vegetarian when you recommend a recipe.” Those are practical prompts, not a guarantee that every detail will be retained.

Memory is selective. ChatGPT says it does not retain every detail, and the information considered relevant can change. Treat any remembered context as potentially incomplete, inaccurate, or out of date—not as a verbatim record or a source of truth.

Product What it can carry forward Scope and controls Retention and availability
ChatGPT When enabled, relevant context may come from past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files, and connected apps where available. Users can review, correct, or delete memories. Temporary Chat can avoid creating or using personalization memory. Settings and availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Removing a saved memory may also require deleting the chat where it originated and removing copies in other sources. OpenAI’s memory documentation explains current controls and limitations.
Microsoft Copilot Studio The preview feature describes capturing preferences and context, storing them, and applying them in later conversations. Each user has a separate memory folder, and makers can turn the feature on or off. The preview documentation says memories are deleted after 28 days without interaction. Preview behavior may change; see Microsoft’s documentation.
Cloudflare Agent Memory Persistent, scoped context for users, organizations, and domains. Documentation describes memory scopes, but does not establish a consumer-facing review or deletion workflow in the cited overview. Cloudflare describes the service as a private beta; see its Agent Memory documentation.
Amazon Bedrock Agents Session summaries rather than an assumed full conversation transcript. Summaries are associated with a memory ID; a later session loads prior summaries when invoked with that same ID. The cited documentation describes the mechanism, not a universal retention period. See AWS’s session-memory documentation.
Salesforce Agent Memory Relevant user details identified from conversations for use in future conversations. Availability depends on edition and add-on licensing conditions. Check the current Salesforce Agent Memory documentation for eligibility and product details.

What to check before relying on an assistant’s memory

Which information can it use?

Find out whether memory draws only on details you explicitly save, or can also use prior chats, files, custom instructions, connected applications, or summaries. A broader set of sources may add useful context, but it also makes it more important to understand what the assistant can access.

Where does the memory apply?

Memory may be associated with an individual user, an organization, a domain, or a particular agent’s sessions. AWS’s documented memory ID, for example, is how a later session retrieves earlier summaries. Do not assume that a preference saved in one product or workspace automatically follows you into another.

Can you inspect and correct it?

Look for controls to see what is stored, fix a mistaken preference, and remove information you no longer want used. If there is no clear inspection or correction path, be cautious about treating remembered details as dependable.

What does deletion actually remove?

Deleting a memory item may not delete the chat or other source from which it came. OpenAI explicitly notes that removing a saved memory does not necessarily remove the original chat, and other copies or sources may also need attention. Check the product’s deletion instructions rather than assuming one action clears everything.

Retention rules vary: Microsoft’s Copilot Studio preview documentation specifies deletion after 28 days without interaction, while the cited AWS material describes session summaries tied to a memory ID without stating a comparable period. Availability can also depend on plan, region, platform, workspace, preview or beta status, and licensing. Confirm the current documentation for your account or deployment before making a rollout decision.

Use memory as a convenience, not an authority

Memory is most useful for stable, low-risk context that saves repeated setup—such as dietary preferences when requesting meal ideas. When a detail matters to the answer, state it again or verify that the assistant has it right. Review stored information periodically, correct stale assumptions, and avoid relying on memory alone for consequential decisions.

OpenAI’s June 4, 2026 announcement about ChatGPT memory describes work on freshness, continuity, and relevance; it does not establish a general accuracy or effectiveness rate for AI memory. There is no comparable named statistic in the cited product documentation that shows how reliably these systems remember user needs. See OpenAI’s announcement for its product-specific description.
