Use the Ages Of War server files that match your Minecraft and Forge release, then start the supplied server with run.bat—not by opening server.jar. For the officially documented server package, that means Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. The project also lists a 1.20.1 server edition marked alpha, so a 1.12.2 client, server files and Forge installation must not be mixed with 1.20.1 files.

What Ages of War is
Ages Of War (Nukes,Bombs and Guns!!) is a CurseForge Forge modpack by Austizz_TDS. Its stated focus is a progression from Stone Age and medieval technology into modern firearms, vehicles, explosives and nuclear weapons. CurseForge categorizes it around combat/PvP, technology, multiplayer, exploration and Vanilla+ elements. The project page recorded 347,336 downloads when it was crawled in 2026.
The pack is not one universal download. The project lists Minecraft 1.12.2 and Minecraft 1.20.1 support, while the authoritative server-file instructions are for 1.12.2. Treat each Minecraft release as a separate installation: the client profile, Forge loader, mods, configuration files and server pack all need to belong to the same release and pack version.

Choose the exact release before installing
Recommended baseline: 1.12.2 Forge
The documented server package targets Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Use this branch when you want the server instructions, RAM guidance and run.bat workflow described by the pack author to apply directly.
1.20.1 is a separate, alpha server edition
The project also lists a newer 1.20.1 server edition identified as alpha. Alpha status means its files and behavior can differ from the established 1.12.2 package. Do not copy a 1.12.2 mods folder, configuration directory or world into a 1.20.1 server and expect it to work. Make a separate directory and have every player install the same 1.20.1 client release.

Why the pack version matters
V13 is dated November 26, 2024 and adds or changes components including Lost Cities, Deep Resonance, Immersive Petroleum, Quark, several vehicle packs, voice chat and PacketFixer. A world or configuration from another release may therefore have different blocks, entities or generation rules. Record the pack version in your server notes and keep the matching client installer available for every player.
Requirements and preparation
- A legal Minecraft installation and a Forge installation for the exact Minecraft version selected.
- The matching Ages of War client profile for every player.
- The matching server files for the same pack and Minecraft release.
- A folder with several gigabytes of free storage for the server, libraries, logs and world backups.
- At least 5–6 GB of memory available to the server, according to the author’s server instructions. The supplied launcher is configured around 8 GB.
- Administrative access to the computer or hosting panel that will run the server.
- A reliable way to back up the world before changing mods, configs or world-generation settings.
The 5–6 GB figure is the publisher’s minimum operating guidance, not an independent benchmark. Actual headroom depends on player count, view distance, world generation, vehicles, explosions and other loaded activity. Leave memory for the operating system and background services rather than assigning every gigabyte on the machine to Java.

Install the client
- Pick one branch. Decide whether the group is playing the documented 1.12.2 Forge release or the separately listed 1.20.1 alpha release.
- Install the corresponding Forge loader. The loader version must match the Minecraft release expected by the pack profile. A Forge installation for another Minecraft version cannot load the same mod set.
- Install the matching pack profile. Use the Ages of War project files for the selected release. If you install manually, keep the supplied mod and configuration files together; do not add files from another branch to “fill gaps.”
- Launch once with no server connection. This creates the client configuration and reveals missing-library or loader errors before you troubleshoot networking.
- Verify the title-screen version. Check that Minecraft and Forge show the intended release, then compare the installed mod list with the server’s files. Every player should make this same check.
If one player can start the game but cannot join, compare the complete release label and mod list first. A client that merely says “Forge” is not necessarily running the same Forge/Minecraft combination as the server.
Download and prepare the server files
Use a clean, dedicated directory
Extract the server package into a new folder used only for this instance. Avoid placing it inside a client’s .minecraft directory or reusing an old world’s folder. A clean directory makes it possible to identify which files belong to this release and to roll back safely.
Start it with the supplied launcher
The official instruction is explicit: never run the server by clicking server.jar; always run it by clicking run.bat. The batch file supplies the intended Java launch parameters and memory allocation. Double-clicking the jar can omit those settings or start the wrong file.
- Open the extracted server folder.
- Run
run.batfrom that folder. - Allow the first launch to create libraries, configuration files and the world. The initial run may stop while it creates the files required for the next start.
- If the files include an EULA agreement, read the Minecraft EULA and set the agreement value as required before restarting. Do not alter unrelated settings while diagnosing a first launch.
- Run
run.batagain and wait for the console to report that the server is ready for connections.
Adjust memory when necessary
The supplied batch file is configured around 8 GB. The author advises users with less than 16 GB of total system RAM to reduce the allocation to 5–6 GB. Edit only the memory values in the batch file, preserve the rest of the command, save it, and start the server through that file again. Assigning more memory than the computer can spare can make the operating system swap or become unresponsive; assigning too little can cause out-of-memory crashes during generation or heavy combat.

Configure the world and server behavior
After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly from its console before editing files. The server.properties file controls key settings identified by the pack instructions:

World type is especially important with a pack that includes exploration and generation-related content. Make a backup before changing it, and test a new world when evaluating a different generation setup rather than experimenting on the only copy of a shared world.

Host computer
- Start the server with
run.batand wait until it is ready. - Keep the server console open while players connect; closing it stops the process.
- Confirm that the host’s firewall permits the Java server process on the private network.
Players on the same network
The official instructions say to use 0 or localhost in the IP-address field for local-network connections. Use the address format required by the pack’s connection screen, then enter the server port shown in the server configuration if the client asks for one.
If localhost works on the host but another computer cannot connect, the problem is usually network visibility or firewall access rather than the modpack. Test from a second device, confirm both machines are on the same private network, and check that the server is listening on the intended interface.

Let friends join over the internet
Players outside the home network cannot normally reach a private server by using localhost. The pack’s server instructions direct administrators to configure port forwarding on the router.
- Give the host computer a stable local-network address so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
- Forward the server’s configured port from the router to that computer.
- Allow the Java server through the host firewall for the selected network profile.
- Give friends the public address and port, not the host’s private address or
localhost. - Test from a connection outside the home network, such as a mobile hotspot. Testing only from inside the same router can produce misleading results.
Expose only the port required for the server, keep the operating system and router updated, and share the address privately. If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; in that case, use a hosting service or another network design that provides an externally reachable endpoint.

A managed provider can remove router and hardware work, but it does not remove the need to match the exact pack release. Two providers advertise one-click Ages of War installation: BoxToPlay lists Forge 1.12.2 server editions, and MTXServ describes installation through an administration panel plus a launcher-based client flow. Their pages do not establish current pricing, independent performance, affiliate terms or guaranteed availability, so treat those as setup options rather than performance recommendations.

Lag, memory pressure and the supplied plugins
The server package includes plugins that the author says are intended to reduce lag spikes. The same instructions warn that removing them may increase lag. Keep those components in place while troubleshooting unless you have a specific compatibility reason to remove one, and treat the lag-reduction claim as the author’s recommendation rather than a measured benchmark.
Reduce load in a controlled order
- Stop unnecessary programs on the host and confirm the server has its intended memory allocation.
- Lower render distance in
server.propertiesand restart cleanly. - Test the world with fewer simultaneous players and fewer active machines or vehicles.
- Watch the server console for repeated errors before changing mods.
- Change one setting at a time and keep a backup so you can identify which change helped.
Large explosions, vehicle activity, exploration and newly generated terrain can create short spikes even when an idle server appears healthy. A higher RAM allocation does not automatically fix CPU, disk or network bottlenecks.
Common failures and fixes
The server window closes immediately
Start with run.bat, not the jar. If it still closes, launch the batch file from a command prompt so the error remains visible, then check for a missing Java installation, an incorrect Forge version, an incomplete extraction or a damaged library download. Do not replace random mod files until the first error is identified.
“Missing mods” or a rejected connection
Compare the Minecraft version, Forge version, Ages of War release and complete mod list on both sides. The 1.12.2 and 1.20.1 branches are not interchangeable, and V13’s component changes mean that an older profile can differ even within the same broad Minecraft version.
Players cannot connect from outside
Check the server’s configured port, the router’s forwarding destination, the host firewall and whether the ISP permits inbound connections. A friend testing from the same home network is not a valid public-internet test. Use an external connection and provide the public address rather than the private LAN address.
World corruption or a bad configuration change
Stop the server, restore the most recent known-good world and configuration backup, and test the change in a disposable copy. Never experiment with world-generation settings on the only copy of a shared world.
Insufficient memory
Use the author’s 5–6 GB minimum as the lower boundary, keep the supplied 8 GB setting only when the computer has adequate total RAM, and reduce render distance before repeatedly increasing Java allocation. If the machine has less than 16 GB system RAM, the instructions specifically advise reducing the batch-file allocation to 5–6 GB.

Operational checklist for a reliable server
- Write down the exact Minecraft, Forge and Ages of War versions.
- Keep the client and server downloads in a labeled archive so players can reproduce the installation.
- Back up the world before adding or removing mods, changing generation settings or upgrading the pack.
- Use the supplied
run.batand preserve its launch parameters when editing RAM. - Keep the author’s lag-related plugins unless testing proves a compatibility problem.
- Test local joining before configuring public access, then test public access from outside the home network.
- Give administrative privileges only to trusted players and keep backups off the same disk as the live world.
Bottom line
For the least ambiguous setup, install the 1.12.2 Forge release on every client, use its matching server package, allocate 5–6 GB at minimum (the supplied script targets about 8 GB), and start exclusively with run.bat. Configure server.properties, use localhost or 0 for local play, and set up router port forwarding for friends outside the network. Treat the separately listed 1.20.1 alpha edition as a different server, not an upgrade you can mix into the 1.12.2 files.
