Agent-to-Agent Discovery in SMESH: What Runtime Introductions Add Beyond Coordination

Coordination helps agents collaborate, but runtime discovery identifies a suitable peer, verifies the introduction, and provides a supported path to invoke it.

Agent coordination helps agents divide work and exchange task state; it does not, by itself, tell one agent which unknown peer is available, how to verify that peer, or how to call it. Runtime discovery supplies that introduction: a caller searches for a published capability, selects a match, establishes a trusted connection or action contract, and then invokes it. The name “SMESH” is not established by the available documentation as an official name for Semesh (StructureIntelligence), so the systems below are treated as distinct examples, not one product or protocol.

Why coordination alone cannot find a runtime peer

Coordination concerns collaboration: assigning subtasks, exchanging messages, or tracking task progress among participants that are already known or connected. Discovery addresses a different question: which agent can perform a needed capability now, and how can the caller reach it?

Without a discovery mechanism, a caller generally needs a known endpoint or bespoke lookup logic. That can be reasonable for a small, fixed set of services, but it ties the consumer to a provider address and makes provider changes or additions harder to absorb. A registry or mesh can decouple the consumer from the address by letting it request a capability and receive a suitable provider introduction. It does not eliminate the need to define what the capability means or how the call works.

What “runtime introduction” entails

A useful introduction is more than returning a name or endpoint. The caller needs enough information to establish that the peer is an appropriate and permitted target, and enough of a contract to make a valid request and interpret the result.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Published identity and capability: the provider advertises who it is and what it can do, in a card or catalog record.
  • Selection: discovery matches the caller’s requested capability to an eligible provider.
  • Trust and authorization: the parties establish that the selected identity is acceptable and that the requested interaction is allowed.
  • Connection or action contract: the caller receives a supported route and the required credentials or session proof, along with the request shape.
  • Invocation and observation: the caller makes the request and handles its outcome, errors, and any resulting state.

These are distinct responsibilities. A match is not proof of identity, authorization, availability at the moment of use, or successful execution.

Two documented approaches, not one shared protocol

Semesh: searchable Service Units and explicit actions

The Semesh agent guide describes the platform as “a searchable Service Unit layer.” Its documented pattern starts with public, read-only discovery and detail lookup, which the guide says are anonymous. A consumer finds a Service Unit, selects a nested Action, and preserves the exact Unit and Action identity and catalog pin through the subsequent workflow.

The guide distinguishes a quote from execution: a canonical Service Unit Action quote is effect-zero and does not call the provider. An authenticated invocation uses the canonical Unit Action and Invocation routes, after which the consumer can observe the returned Invocation. The guide cautions that documentation does not establish production rollout; users should verify live discovery before making mutations. This is documentation of an intended workflow, not evidence that a particular live service is available.

AMP: capability matching followed by a direct connection

The separate Agent Mesh Protocol (AMP) project README describes a provider publishing an Agent Card containing its identity, domains, capabilities, and endpoints. A consumer requests a domain or capability; a matching engine selects a provider; the participants receive a session token; and the consumer connects to the provider’s gRPC endpoint with that token. AMP’s README says, “The two agents talk directly.”

That is AMP’s described design, not a description of Semesh. The evidence does not establish that Semesh uses AMP’s Agent Cards, NATS, gRPC, matching engine, or token scheme. AMP presents cross-organization agent interaction and provider substitution as use cases; those are project claims about its intended fit, not proof of interoperability with other systems.

Discovery needs a trust boundary

A directory can return a plausible-looking capability record, but consumers still need a way to decide whether to trust the identity behind it. Microsoft’s AgentMesh Trust and Coordination 1.0 specification recommends signed Agent Cards. It describes a discovery client retrieving a card, checking its signature, checking the agent’s DID against a revocation list, and initiating a handshake if verification succeeds. Its capability-discovery method is intended to return cards advertising a requested capability without requiring the caller to know agent DIDs in advance.

The Microsoft specification also describes fail-closed behavior for cases such as invalid signatures, revoked identities, and insufficient trust. These are requirements or recommendations within that specification; they should not be assumed to apply automatically to Semesh, AMP, or every agent mesh. In any implementation, the security decision should be bound to the peer actually selected, not merely to a search result. Authorization for a capability and the credentials or session proof used for invocation remain separate checks.

When a registry or mesh is useful—and when it is not

Decision factor Registry or mesh approach Direct calls
Service topology Useful when providers span teams or organizations, or when the available set changes. AMP positions itself for cross-organization use. Often simpler when the service set is fixed and controlled within one project; AMP’s README explicitly notes direct HTTP can be simpler in that case.
Provider changes A catalog-driven match can support provider substitution or adding agents without redeploying consumers, as AMP presents in its use cases. Consumers may need endpoint configuration changes or redeployment when addresses or providers change.
Trust and authorization Requires clear rules for signed identity, revocation, capability authorization, and binding a handshake or session to the selected peer. Trust and access rules still matter, but can be managed through the project’s existing service and credential arrangements.
Operational cost Adds discovery availability, catalog freshness, presence or heartbeat behavior, auditability, and matching latency to operate. Avoids a matching round trip, though endpoint ownership and change management still need attention.
Integration scope Agent-to-agent discovery and invocation address peer selection and interaction. Direct calls suit known service endpoints. LLM-to-tool integration is a different problem; AMP’s README describes MCP as complementary and a better fit for that use.

AMP’s README estimates roughly 10–50 ms for its matching round trip. That is AMP’s own implementation estimate, not an independently established benchmark or a general mesh latency figure. The same README says its matching overhead is a poor fit for requirements below one millisecond. For latency-sensitive fixed paths, a direct call may be the better trade-off; for a changing or cross-organization peer set, the indirection may be worthwhile.

Questions to settle before adopting runtime discovery

  • What is the capability contract? Specify what a capability promises, the request and response shapes, and the errors a caller must handle. A descriptive label alone is not enough for reliable invocation.
  • Who may publish and select providers? Define catalog ownership, publication review, authorization, and how revoked or stale records are handled.
  • How is the selected identity verified? Establish signature, identity-status, trust, and handshake or session-binding rules before allowing invocation.
  • What does “available” mean? Decide whether discovery reports catalog presence, current reachability, readiness, or some combination; these states are not interchangeable.
  • How will failures be observed and recovered? Define timeouts, retries, audit records, and behavior when discovery succeeds but connection or invocation fails.
  • Does the system need discovery at all? If callers use a small, stable set of known services and direct calls satisfy the trust and change-management requirements, a mesh may add complexity without enough benefit.

Keep the names and layers separate

“SMESH” remains unresolved in the available material. Semesh is a plausible name a reader may have in mind, but its guide does not establish SMESH as its alternate or official name. AMP, Microsoft AgentMesh, and MongoDB Atlas Agent Engine’s A2A documentation are also distinct references: the surfaced MongoDB synopsis describes same-project agents discovering and invoking one another, but does not establish detailed protocol behavior or a connection to the other systems.

The practical distinction is stable even when product names differ: coordination organizes known collaboration; runtime discovery locates and introduces a peer; trust checks validate that introduction; and an invocation contract determines what the caller can do with it.
