Afterpay’s US guidance does not set a fixed maximum number of open orders. Each purchase is assessed separately, and having more active orders may make approval criteria stricter. An overdue payment blocks a new order; paying down existing orders may help, but it does not guarantee approval.
Is there a maximum number of open Afterpay orders?
Afterpay’s official US help page does not publish a specific account-wide limit for open orders. Instead, it says that each order is assessed individually and that the number of active orders may affect whether a new purchase is approved. That means there is no reliable published count—such as three or five—that guarantees you can place another order.

Afterpay says that “Having more open orders may make the approval criteria stricter. Pay down existing orders before placing another order.” Treat this as guidance, not a promise that paying down orders will result in approval. Afterpay’s US troubleshooting page also notes that Available to Spend is an estimate, not a guaranteed spending limit.

What affects approval for another order?
Open orders are one part of a fresh decision, not a standalone cutoff. Afterpay lists several factors that can affect approval:

- Number of open orders: More active orders may make the approval criteria stricter.
- Amount currently owed: Your outstanding balance is considered alongside the number of orders.
- Payment history: Past payment behavior can affect a new decision.
- Account tenure: Newer accounts may have a lower per-order approval threshold.
- Order value: Approval is assessed for the particular purchase.
- First-installment funds: Afterpay considers whether you can pay the first installment.
Even if you have paid on time and have room in your budget, an individual order can still be declined. Afterpay also identifies account restrictions, merchant limits, and payment-method issues as possible reasons for a decline.
What to do if Afterpay declines your order
- Check for an overdue payment. Afterpay’s US guidance says an overdue payment prevents you from placing a new order. Resolve it before trying again.
- Review your active orders and amount owed. If you can comfortably do so, paying down existing orders may help with a later approval decision, but it is not guaranteed to change the result.
- Check the purchase and payment method. The merchant may have its own limits, and a payment-method issue or account restriction can also cause a decline.
- Do not treat Available to Spend as a promise. It is an estimate; Afterpay evaluates each order separately.
