After Gemini Hack Kigali: Turning Motivation Into Open-Source Fixes

Gemini Hack Kigali brought the deadline and community; small open-source fixes gave the motivation a next step. Aniruddha Adak reflects on what can happen after a hackathon.

The hackathon ended; the motivation did not. At Gemini Hack Kigali, a one-day, in-person event in Kigali, Rwanda, I felt the charge of building against a deadline and meeting other people who wanted to make things. What gave that energy somewhere to go afterward was contributing small, practical fixes to open-source projects.

What the hackathon gave me—and what it could not

Gemini Hack Kigali was an MLH-powered, one-day, in-person hackathon. I came away energized by the time pressure and the community around it. That is my experience, not proof that hackathons reliably lead people into open source. An event can create a reason to start; what happens next depends on what a participant chooses to do.

During a hackathon, the deadline encourages a quick attempt at a problem and a demoable result. Afterward, there is no countdown telling you what to build. For me, the useful question became less “How can I make this impressive?” and more “What small change would make this software work better for someone?”

How I kept the momentum going

I found that open-source maintenance offered a practical next step. The issues I worked on were not grand reinventions; they included edge cases, confusing errors, missing tests, and failures involving Windows paths. These are modest problems, but they can matter to the person who encounters them.

#1 Best Overall
CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

My process was straightforward: find a real issue, reproduce it, explain what is happening, make a focused change, and respond to review. Sometimes feedback points somewhere unexpected. That is part of the work: understand the concern, adjust where it improves the fix, and then move on to the next issue.

One way I put the lesson is: “A hackathon gives you a deadline for starting. Open source gives you a reason to keep going after the deadline disappears.”

Small fixes can be specific and consequential

In my account, I listed 13 pull requests that I said merged on September 24–25, 2026: 10 in genspark-ai/genoffice and three in github/docs. These examples are my account of that batch, not independently verified here.

Repository Pull requests Changes described
genspark-ai/genoffice #838, #832, #868, #867, #871, #831, #835, #833, #870, #837 Bounding fallback depth; replacing an empty list; capping streamed tool calls; paginating cache checks; parsing geometry independent of order; avoiding unsafe ID arithmetic; failing closed on malformed salts; containing exported image paths; and indexing candidate pairs.
github/docs #46058, #46055, #46050 Updating operator and retention links, and clarifying classroom clone-directory wording.

The changes vary, but they share a useful scale: each addresses a defined behavior rather than trying to solve everything at once.

What I would tell someone considering a hackathon

If you are thinking about joining a hackathon, go—but go with flexible expectations. Your original scope may shrink, and you may not finish the project you imagined. You might instead meet collaborators, discover what kind of work you enjoy, or leave with momentum for a different project. Those are possibilities, not guaranteed outcomes.

My personal habits are simple: pick a problem that matters to you, make the smallest useful version work, and ask for feedback before polishing. Then decide what, if anything, you want to continue after the event. For me, that continuation was open-source maintenance; it does not have to be the same for everyone.

What the contribution count does—and does not—say

At the time of my essay, a GitHub live search showed 764 merged pull requests authored by aniruddhaadak80. That is a time-sensitive count, and it includes repositories I own. It should not be read as 764 contributions to other people’s projects, or as a current total today.

If you have been to an MLH event, I would love to hear what stayed with you after the lights came up.
