Affordable Alternatives to Apple’s AirPods Max: Best Picks for 2026

Sony WH-1000XM6 is a strong all-round premium alternative, Bose stands out for noise cancellation, and JLab offers a lower-cost path. Compare trade-offs and local prices.

The AirPods Max 2 are no longer the only current-generation premium option to consider. For a balanced mix of sound, comfort and noise cancellation at a lower price, start with the Sony WH-1000XM6; choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if noise cancellation is your main priority. For a tighter budget, the JLab JBuds Lux ANC is a different, lower-cost class of headphone—not a like-for-like replacement. Prices and stock vary by market, so compare current local offers before deciding.

Which AirPods Max alternative should you choose?

Headphones Best for What stands out Key trade-off
Sony WH-1000XM6 Most buyers seeking a premium all-rounder What Hi-Fi? highlights improved dynamics and detail, adaptive noise cancellation, folding earcups and improved comfort. Still a premium purchase; whether it is meaningfully cheaper depends on your local price and current sales.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) Noise cancellation What Hi-Fi? selects it as its noise-cancelling alternative. Listed features include transparency mode and lossless audio via USB-C. That review says its noise cancellation is strong but sonic transparency is behind the AirPods Max; wired listening requires battery.
Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Long rated battery life and potential value Tom’s Guide lists up to 60 hours with ANC and describes the ANC as effective. Momentum 5 Wireless now has the main-list position in What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 alternatives guide. Momentum 4 may cause ear heat, and Tom’s Guide notes possible app connectivity issues.
JLab JBuds Lux ANC Lowest-cost option in this group SoundGuys calls it a strong value choice for sub-$100 ANC headphones. It is a budget compromise rather than a premium-equivalent AirPods Max substitute.
Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3 Premium design, sound and comfort Tom’s Guide names it its overall AirPods Max alternative, citing its slim design, sound, comfort and hard case. Its premium positioning may not suit a strict budget; check street prices in your market.

These are use-case recommendations, not a claim that one pair is best for everyone. Reviewer descriptions of sound and comfort are judgments; your fit, listening preferences and phone ecosystem can change which trade-off matters most.

Best all-round premium pick: Sony WH-1000XM6

The WH-1000XM6 is the most straightforward starting point if you want a high-end over-ear headphone with a broad feature set rather than one narrow advantage. What Hi-Fi?’s comparison notes improved dynamics and detail, adaptive noise cancellation, folding earcups and improved comfort over its predecessor, and treats it as a worthy AirPods Max alternative. See What Hi-Fi?’s alternatives guide for its assessment.

Price is the qualification: the guide displayed a $379 deal when crawled in October 2026. That is a time-sensitive offer snapshot, not a guaranteed current price or a stable MSRP. Compare the live local price with both AirPods Max 2 and the older WH-1000XM5 before buying. If the XM6 is only marginally cheaper where you live, the value case is weaker; if it is discounted substantially, its balance of portability, ANC and sound makes it a strong candidate.

Best if noise cancellation comes first: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

Choose the second-generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra when blocking outside sound is more important to you than matching Apple’s sound presentation. What Hi-Fi? identifies it as its noise-cancelling alternative. Its listed specifications include SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive support, transparency mode, USB-C, lossless audio via USB-C, and a 30-hour battery rating. The review considers its noise cancellation a strength, while judging sonic transparency to be behind the AirPods Max. Details and the current comparison appear on What Hi-Fi?’s guide.

The same page showed an Amazon offer of $399.99 when accessed in October 2026. Treat it as a dated offer, not a lasting price promise. One practical limitation matters if you plan to listen with a cable: the review says the Bose requires battery power even for wired listening. Check whether your phone supports the codecs you intend to use; codec availability alone does not guarantee the same experience across devices.

Best for battery life and value: Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless

Momentum 4 is worth comparing when endurance and a favorable current price outweigh having the newest model. Tom’s Guide lists up to 60 hours of battery life with ANC, along with Bluetooth 5.2 and SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive support; it also describes the ANC as effective. This is a manufacturer-style rated figure as reported by that guide, not a promise of the same runtime in every listening setup. See Tom’s Guide’s 2026 alternatives guide for its discussion.

There are comfort and software caveats: Tom’s Guide notes that ears may get warm and that app connectivity can be troublesome. Also compare it with the newer Momentum 5 Wireless rather than assuming Momentum 4 remains Sennheiser’s current top recommendation: What Hi-Fi?’s guide updated September 18, 2026 puts Momentum 5 on its main list and moves Momentum 4 to “Also consider.” That guide does not establish a Momentum 5 price here, so compare live offers rather than inferring which generation is better value.

Lowest-cost path: JLab JBuds Lux ANC

If keeping the price down matters more than premium materials, advanced features or close parity with AirPods Max, the JLab JBuds Lux ANC is the budget-tier choice in this group. SoundGuys lists a $79.99 MSRP and describes it as a strong sub-$100 noise-cancelling option. The MSRP is not a promise of a current sale price, and the model should be understood as an affordable alternative category—not as a premium headphone with equivalent construction or features. Read SoundGuys’ AirPods Max alternatives roundup for its evaluation.

SoundGuys also displayed a reader poll with more than 700 votes at crawl time: Sony WH-1000XM6 received 42%, JBL Tour One M3 32%, and JLab JBuds Lux ANC 18%. That is a poll among that publisher’s readers, not a representative survey of headphone buyers, and it should not outweigh your own priorities or a current price comparison.

Premium alternative to consider: Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3

The PX7 S3 is a contender if you want a premium-feeling design and value sound and comfort. Tom’s Guide names it its overall AirPods Max alternative and points to its slim design, sound, comfort and included hard case; the guide lists a 30-hour battery rating. See Tom’s Guide’s alternatives guide.

This is not the obvious choice for someone whose first requirement is spending as little as possible. Compare its actual street price against Sony and Bose in your region, and consider whether its design and case matter enough to justify any remaining price difference.

How to compare before buying

  • Set a real price ceiling. Compare current local prices and available discounts, not a temporary deal reported by a review page. Include the price of AirPods Max 2 in the same comparison if you are deciding whether the savings justify giving up Apple-specific features.
  • Pick your leading priority. Start with ANC for Bose, a balanced premium feature set for Sony, long rated runtime for Momentum 4, or the lowest-cost route for JLab. Consider Bowers & Wilkins if premium design and comfort rank highly for you.
  • Check fit and comfort. Head shape, glasses, clamping force and warmth affect long sessions. In particular, Tom’s Guide flags possible ear heat with Momentum 4. Where possible, buy from a seller with a clear return policy.
  • Match codecs to your phone. Bose and Momentum 4 list SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive, but support depends on the source device. Confirm compatibility with your phone before treating a codec as a buying advantage.
  • Think through wired and USB-C use. Bose lists USB-C lossless audio, but What Hi-Fi? says wired listening still requires battery. Check the exact connection behavior you need rather than assuming a cable means passive operation.
  • Account for what Apple integration means to you. The alternatives may not reproduce AirPods Max’s Apple ecosystem features or premium materials. If seamless use with Apple devices is central, weigh that convenience against the price difference instead of comparing sound or ANC alone.
