Choose Affinity for illustration, branding, print, and offline creative production; choose Figma for interface design, prototypes, collaboration, design systems, and developer handoff. They overlap in vector drawing, but they are built around different jobs. Many teams will be better served by using both: create detailed artwork in Affinity, then assemble and manage product interfaces in Figma.
Here, “Affinity” means Canva’s newer unified Affinity app, rather than only the former standalone Affinity Designer. Canva describes it as a free app combining vector, photo, and page-layout tools. Figma is the product-design platform. Canva’s announcement and Figma’s plan overview outline those different emphases.
Affinity vs. Figma at a glance
| If your main job is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Detailed vector illustration or brand artwork | Affinity | Its graphics-editor workflow is suited to authored artwork, print output, and high-control creative production. |
| Website or app UI/UX | Figma | Auto layout, components, variables, libraries, and prototypes support reusable, responsive interface work. |
| Real-time team design and review | Figma | Multiple editors, comments, and shareable links are central to its workflow. |
| Offline desktop production | Affinity | Figma says it does not offer a fully featured offline mode. |
| Developer inspection and handoff | Figma | Dev Mode provides measurements, annotations, code properties, and asset export; basic inspection is also available to free viewers. |
| Mixed brand-art and product-interface work | Both | Affinity can create the master artwork while Figma handles responsive screens, interaction, review, and handoff. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a claim that one tool universally has “better vectors.” Affinity centers on making finished creative assets; Figma centers on making shared product-design systems.
What changed with Affinity
Canva’s announcement describes an all-new Affinity app bringing vector, photo, and page-layout capabilities together. It says the app is available for Mac and Windows, with iPad described as coming soon; check Canva’s announcement for current platform status. Canva presents the full Affinity app as free for everyone. That is the current offer, not a guarantee about future pricing.

The same announcement says Canva Premium users get Canva AI features inside Affinity. Treat the free graphics app and optional Canva Premium/AI benefits as separate decisions; Canva’s connection does not make the two products interchangeable. The signup page is Canva Affinity.
Older comparisons may describe the former Affinity Designer as a one-time-purchase product. That pricing description does not reflect Canva’s current announcement about the unified app. When evaluating older files or workflows, identify which Affinity release you use rather than assuming every feature, platform, or licensing detail carries over.
Where Affinity is stronger
Illustration, logos, and brand assets
Affinity is the more natural fit for constructing detailed vector artwork, logos, icons, and illustrations with a traditional graphics-editor approach. It is also useful when artwork needs careful path and node editing, typography, effects, and precise export control. Figma can draw interface icons and simpler illustrations, and it is convenient when those assets belong in a shared UI library; that does not make it a like-for-like replacement for a dedicated creative-production workflow.
Photo editing, layout, and print
The unified Affinity app adds photo and page-layout capabilities alongside vector work, making it relevant to designers moving between artwork, raster editing, and multipage documents. For print or other high-resolution output, a desktop graphics environment gives you a more fitting production workflow than Figma, which is not a traditional print-layout tool.

Local work and file control
Affinity favors local desktop production and is the stronger choice if you regularly work without reliable internet access. Local files still require deliberate backup, version naming, permissions, and sharing practices; offline access alone does not create team governance or a review system.
Where Figma is stronger
Responsive interface design and design systems
Figma is the clear default for product UI/UX teams. Its feature set is organized around frames, auto layout, constraints, components and variants, variables, and shared libraries. Those tools help teams maintain interface patterns across screen sizes and states rather than merely drawing individual screens. Figma’s current product and plan page lists capabilities including auto layout, components, libraries, multiplayer editing, and prototyping.
Affinity can draw a screen and export its assets, but drawing a UI is not the same as managing responsive rules, reusable components, interaction states, and a shared design system. The available Affinity announcement does not establish equivalent team-oriented component and handoff workflows.
Prototypes and review
Figma supports interactive prototypes that can be shared for stakeholder review and usability testing. Its designer overview positions prototyping alongside interface design. Affinity can supply screen artwork, but interactive product prototyping is not its documented center of gravity.

Collaboration and browser access
Figma supports multiple editors working in one file, comments, shareable links, cloud storage, and plan-dependent version history. That makes it easier to bring designers, developers, and stakeholders into a common review process. The current Affinity announcement discusses exporting projects to Canva and sharing custom studios, but does not establish Figma-equivalent multiplayer editing, browser review, or developer handoff. Check current product documentation before selecting Affinity for a team workflow that depends on those capabilities.
Developer handoff: useful access does not always require a paid Dev seat
Figma Dev Mode supports measurements, annotations, code properties, asset export, and copying CSS, iOS, and Android values. Figma also documents an integration for VS Code in its Dev Mode guide.
Do not assume every developer needs a paid Dev seat. Figma’s pricing FAQ says free viewers can inspect measurements and property values, copy code, export assets, and comment. Whether a paid seat is warranted depends on the additional team capabilities required, not simply on whether a developer needs to inspect a design.
Affinity can export assets, but an export-and-translation process is different from an integrated inspection workflow. If developers need implementation values, annotations, and a shared source of truth, Figma is the safer default based on the documented features.

- PLEASE NOTE: The XPPen Artist Pro 14 Gen2 needs to connect with a computer to use. You need to use it with your Computer or Laptop. IT IS NOT A STANDALONE DRAWING TABLET

File formats and moving assets between the apps
Canva says the new Affinity supports PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, IDML, and other formats. “Supports” does not promise perfect editability or round-tripping: fonts, live effects, symbols, masks, blend modes, and application-specific features may change on import. Test representative files before committing to a migration. Figma’s plan page lists PNG, JPG, PDF, and CSV exports, while its Dev Mode documentation lists PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF. These lists describe documented export options, not necessarily every option in every workflow.
- Create and preserve master illustrations or brand assets in Affinity when fidelity and future editing matter.
- Export SVG for vector assets where the artwork survives the conversion as intended; use PNG or JPG for fixed raster artwork.
- Bring those assets into Figma and build repeated interface elements as Figma components.
- Keep responsive behavior, product flows, prototypes, and developer-facing specifications in Figma.
- Check fonts, gradients, clipping masks, blend modes, and text conversion in actual exported files before promising an editable round trip.
Neither app should be treated as a native editor for the other’s project files without conversion. Keep the source file in the app that owns the editable master.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Offline access, platforms, and ownership
Canva’s current announcement lists Mac and Windows for the new Affinity and describes iPad as coming soon. Figma is browser-centered and also has a desktop application, but Figma’s offline help page says it does not provide a fully featured offline mode. A desktop app should not be assumed to work like a local-first graphics editor when connectivity is lost.
That makes Affinity a better fit for production during travel, in unreliable-network environments, or where local work is preferred. Figma is more suitable when distributed collaborators need browser access and instant review. Organizations should separately assess backup, access controls, file governance, and vendor or account dependency: local files and cloud collaboration solve different problems.

Pricing: compare the seats your team actually needs
Affinity’s full app is described as free for everyone in Canva’s current announcement. Figma offers a free Starter plan, while paid plans charge by seat type. The prices below are USD signals shown on Figma’s pricing page on August 18, 2026; plan prices, billing rules, taxes, regional pricing, and included AI allowances can change.
| Figma plan | Full seat | Dev seat | Collab seat | Billing qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free plan | Free plan | Free plan | Paid seat rates not listed here |
| Professional | $16/month | $12/month | $3/month | Pricing page rate; verify billing terms for your account |
| Organization | $55/month | $25/month | $5/month | Billed annually |
| Enterprise | $90/month | $35/month | $5/month | Billed annually |
Figma’s pricing page distinguishes Full, Dev, and Collab seats; its pricing FAQ explains viewer access. For a solo illustrator who needs no shared product-design system, free Affinity or Figma Starter may be enough, with Affinity better suited to creative production. For a two-person product team, calculate which people need editing, development, or collaboration access rather than multiplying the Full-seat figure by everyone. A designer plus developer should check whether free viewer inspection covers the developer’s needs before assigning a paid Dev seat. Larger organizations should compare the required administration, security, libraries, and governance features against Organization or Enterprise terms directly.
“Figma is free” is incomplete: Starter is free, but advanced team capabilities and paid seats have a cost. Likewise, Affinity’s no-cost app does not replace the time a team may spend translating files or maintaining separate libraries.
Which tool should you choose?
- Illustrator, brand designer, or print designer: Choose Affinity for detailed artwork, logos, layout, and local production.
- Product designer or design-system team: Choose Figma for responsive UI, reusable components, prototypes, collaboration, and handoff.
- Developer: Ask whether view-and-inspect access is enough; Figma documents basic inspection and export for free viewers, with paid Dev access depending on needs.
- Freelancer: Use Affinity if your deliverable is finished artwork; use Figma if clients need live interface review, prototypes, or shared components.
- Agency: Figma suits shared digital-product work across roles; Affinity can remain the production tool for brand and campaign artwork.
- Offline-first or cost-sensitive solo creator: Affinity is the stronger fit for creative production, while Figma Starter remains an option for interface projects that need its workflow.
Can Affinity replace Figma?
For illustration, logos, brand assets, print work, and some asset-production tasks, Affinity can often replace the need to use Figma for that work. For a product UI team that depends on reusable responsive components, interactive prototypes, multiplayer review, and developer inspection, it is usually not a one-for-one Figma replacement. Solo designers may be able to use Affinity alone if they do not need those product-design workflows. Teams that create both authored artwork and digital products can use both: Affinity for the creative master, Figma for the shared product system.
