AxCrypt is the better fit if you want to encrypt selected files while keeping your existing storage service; NordLocker is the better fit if you want encrypted cloud storage with built-in syncing and sharing. They overlap on file encryption, but they solve different storage problems: AxCrypt adds a security layer to files you already manage, while NordLocker provides a dedicated encrypted vault.

How the products differ in everyday use

AxCrypt encrypts files within your existing setup

AxCrypt is oriented around protecting particular files and folders. You can encrypt files locally, then keep or synchronize the encrypted results using storage you already use, including Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive. Its plan and feature pages list secured folders and subfolders, key sharing, anonymous file names, secure deletion, and password-management features. Premium and Business plans list AES-256 encryption and unlimited encryption; that does not mean unlimited cloud storage is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A typical workflow is to install AxCrypt, select a file or folder, choose the encryption action, and then store or sync the encrypted output through your existing provider. This can preserve your current folder structure, sync client, and provider administration. It also means backup and synchronization depend on that separate storage service and its settings.

NordLocker combines encryption with a cloud vault

NordLocker is built around lockers: encrypted storage that can be kept locally or in NordLocker cloud storage. Its plan page lists 3 GB of free cloud storage and paid 500 GB and 2 TB tiers. NordLocker says files are encrypted on the device before upload and synchronized across devices, with browser access as well as Windows, Android, and iOS options.

In the documented web workflow, sign in to a Nord Account, open Web Access, create or unlock the cloud, select a locker, and use “+ Add” to upload files. The service is more consolidated than an encryption layer paired with a separate storage provider, but it makes NordLocker’s storage environment central to the cloud workflow.

Security: what the published claims do and do not establish

Encryption and implementation

Both products advertise strong encryption. AxCrypt’s current plans identify AES-256 for Premium and Business. NordLocker’s materials describe AES-256 alongside XChaCha20-Poly1305, Ed25519/ECC-related cryptography, and Argon2. Those algorithm names are useful details, but they do not by themselves show how securely a product implements encryption, handles keys, protects accounts, or exposes metadata.

Keys, recovery, and the zero-knowledge trade-off

NordLocker says it does not know the user’s encryption key and describes a zero-knowledge design. That can limit the provider’s ability to access file contents, but it also makes credential management important: NordLocker’s help materials treat loss of the cloud password and recovery key as a distinct problem. Save recovery information securely, keep a tested second copy of critical files, and verify recovery on another device before relying on the service for the only copy.

AxCrypt lists account-key backup on its pricing page. That label should not be read as a guarantee that a forgotten password can be recovered or that every encrypted file can be restored; confirm the current recovery behavior for your account and files before depending on it.

File names, metadata, and independent verification

NordLocker says its cloud storage encrypts files and their names; AxCrypt lists anonymous file names. Treat these as vendor descriptions, not as proof that every item of metadata is hidden in every workflow. File sizes, timestamps, account details, access patterns, and sharing information can be separate from file contents. The available official materials do not establish a current comprehensive independent audit or third-party cryptographic review for both products, so there is not enough evidence here to rank one as categorically safer.

Integral 4GB Crypto-197 256-Bit 3.0 USB Flash Drive Encrypted - FIPS 197 Certified, Brute Force Password Attack Protection & Waterproof Double Layer Design
  • Certified to FIPS 197 - U.S. Government Approved High Level Information Security Standard.
  • Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
  • Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
  • Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
  • Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.

Storage, synchronization, and file-size limits

Choose based on whether you need encryption or storage as well. AxCrypt does not list a cloud quota in its current plans, so you can pair it with an existing provider and pay that provider separately. NordLocker includes cloud capacity, making it a more direct option when encrypted storage and synchronization are the goal. Its plan materials say local encryption can continue after a storage plan ends, while cloud sync may be limited when the plan ends or storage exceeds the applicable limit; check the current plan terms before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NordLocker’s documented per-file maximum is 10 GB on Windows and 8 GB in Web Access, Android, and iOS. Batch uploads have no separate total batch limit if each file stays within the relevant individual limit. AxCrypt’s feature page says files larger than 4 GB are supported, but does not establish an exact current maximum, so do not assume it is suitable for files of any size.

Neither synchronization service should be treated as a complete backup by default. Sync can also propagate accidental deletion, corruption, ransomware-encrypted files, or unwanted edits. Keep a separate offline or versioned backup for irreplaceable records.

Sharing and collaboration

NordLocker promotes password-protected file-sharing links, email invitations, and viewer or editor permissions for cloud content. That makes it the more natural fit for cloud-based sharing when recipients need a link or an invitation. Confirm the specific sharing method’s account requirements, expiration and revocation controls, and recipient experience before sending sensitive material.

AxCrypt lists key sharing and secured sharing; its Business materials also list group sharing, user access controls, group password and message sharing, business administration, and a master-key feature. That may suit teams that want administration around file-level encryption while retaining an existing storage provider. The precise recipient experience—especially for someone who does not use AxCrypt—should be checked with a test file first.

Pricing and total cost

AxCrypt’s current pricing page lists Free, Premium, and Business offerings, a 14-day free trial, and an annual-billing discount shown as 20% off. It does not provide a reliably established numerical price here. Because AxCrypt is an encryption layer rather than bundled cloud storage, include the cost of your existing or chosen storage provider when comparing total spend.

NordLocker lists a free plan with 3 GB and paid plans with 500 GB or 2 TB, with monthly and annual billing options and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Introductory and renewal pricing may differ, and VAT may apply by region. A $2.99-per-month display for 500 GB has appeared on NordLocker’s secure-cloud page, but it is not a universal or guaranteed checkout price; verify the currency, billing period, introductory term, renewal amount, and taxes for your country before buying.

Compare annual totals, user or seat counts, storage needs, and renewal terms rather than a promotional monthly figure. AxCrypt may be cheaper if you already pay for suitable storage; NordLocker may be simpler if you want storage and encryption in one subscription.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose AxCrypt if you want to encrypt individual files or folders and keep using Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, local drives, or another established storage system.
  • Choose NordLocker if you want an encrypted cloud vault, included storage, cross-device syncing, browser access, and link-oriented sharing.
  • Consider AxCrypt Business if file-level encryption and the listed group and user-administration controls matter more than included cloud capacity; confirm current seats and terms before purchase.
  • Choose NordLocker Free if you want to try an encrypted-cloud workflow with the listed 3 GB capacity.
  • Investigate alternatives if you require formal compliance assurances, detailed audit logs, advanced collaboration, open standards, command-line automation, or independently documented security audits. Neither product’s cited materials establish all of those requirements.

For large individual files, compare the actual file limits in your intended workflow before committing: NordLocker publishes specific limits, while AxCrypt’s cited feature material does not establish its exact current maximum.
