Affiliate Marketing Explained: How Referrals, Tracking, and Payment Work

Affiliate marketing links a publisher’s promotion to a merchant’s offer. Learn how referrals, tracking, program terms, and clear disclosures fit together.

Affiliate marketing is a referral-based arrangement: a marketer or publisher promotes a merchant’s product or service, and may earn payment when a tracked referral leads to an action the program counts. The qualifying action, tracking method, and payment terms depend on the specific program.

Who takes part in affiliate marketing?

  • Merchant: The business that owns or sells the product or service being promoted.
  • Affiliate marketer or publisher: The person or organization that promotes the merchant’s offer through advertising, links, or other content.
  • Consumer: The person who sees or clicks the promotion and may visit the merchant or complete a qualifying action.
  • Affiliate network: An intermediary that can connect merchants and marketers and may take part in tracking or reporting. Some arrangements involve a network; others differ.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2017 infographic, How Affiliate Marketing Works, depicts these roles and explains that consumers may be tracked after clicking an ad and making a purchase. Tracking and network participation can vary by program.

How does the referral process work?

  1. A merchant makes an offer available for promotion.
  2. An affiliate shares or displays a promotion, such as an ad or link.
  3. A consumer clicks and visits the merchant. The referral may be tracked so the program can associate later activity with the promotion.
  4. If the consumer completes an action the program recognizes, the referral may be credited.
  5. The marketer may receive payment under that program’s terms.

Clicking a promotional link can involve tracking. A click by itself does not establish that a marketer will be paid: the program determines what action qualifies and how it attributes that action to a referral.

What are the types of affiliate marketing?

“Types” can refer to different features of a program, but the available FTC material establishes the referral model and participants rather than a definitive taxonomy of payment types. It would be misleading to imply that every program uses the same payment trigger, attribution rule, or tracking period.

To understand how a particular arrangement works, check these practical distinctions in its terms:

  • Qualifying action: What must happen for a referral to count? The specific trigger is program-dependent.
  • Tracking and reporting: Who handles tracking, and what information does the marketer receive? A network may participate, but not every arrangement is the same.
  • Attribution: How does the program decide whether an action belongs to a particular referral? Do not assume a standard rule or time window; look for the program’s stated terms.
  • Payment terms: What event leads to payment, and what conditions apply? The general referral model alone does not establish a commission amount, schedule, or guarantee.

What should consumers know about affiliate links?

A referral link is part of a promotional relationship, and clicking it may be tracked. If a publisher recommends an offer and may earn from resulting activity, that financial connection can matter to a reader’s judgment. A clear disclosure lets readers weigh the recommendation with that context.

How should affiliates disclose a financial relationship?

For U.S. audiences, FTC endorsement guidance says disclosures should make the relationship clear and conspicuous. Put the explanation close to the recommendation and link so readers encounter it when evaluating the endorsement. The FTC’s example is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.”

The phrase “affiliate link” alone may not tell readers that the publisher can be paid. Plain language explaining the financial relationship is clearer. Requirements can depend on jurisdiction and subject matter; the guidance summarized here is U.S.-focused and does not establish rules for every country or specialized product category.

What makes affiliate promotion truthful?

The FTC’s Advertising and Marketing Basics states: “Under the law, claims in advertisements must be truthful, cannot be deceptive or unfair, and must be evidence-based.” Affiliates should not make claims they cannot support, or suggest they personally tested or used a product if they did not. Additional rules may apply to specialized products and services.

What affiliate marketing does not guarantee

The term describes a way to connect promotion with referrals; it does not, by itself, promise a sale, a payment, a particular commission, or a fixed tracking window. Those details come from each program’s terms. Nor does a referral relationship make an endorsement independent of financial incentives: readers should be able to see the relationship and assess the claims for themselves.
