The Aeotec Motion Sensor combines motion detection with temperature reporting, and Aeotec specifies a 120° viewing angle. Its clearest fit is a home that already has a compatible Zigbee hub. Before buying, check whether your exact hub and regional sensor model work together: Zigbee support and the SmartThings examples Aeotec describes do not guarantee every hub or connected device will support the same routines.
What does the Aeotec Motion Sensor do?
Aeotec describes the Motion Sensor as a Zigbee motion detector with an integrated temperature sensor. Its product page lists a 120° viewing angle; that is Aeotec’s specification, not an independently measured result. The manufacturer also says the SmartThings app can provide alerts for unexpected movement and automate connected devices as people come and go. See Aeotec’s product details.

The temperature sensor adds a second type of input beyond motion. Aeotec gives routines involving compatible thermostats or air-conditioning units as examples, but whether a routine works depends on the hub, software and connected devices.

Compatibility is the key buying question. Aeotec’s support page identifies the Zigbee version as model GP-AEOMSSEU and notes that the home-automation controller determines which wireless technologies and devices a setup can use. Aeotec describes Zigbee hub support and sensor-triggered automations for SmartThings, but you should verify support for your exact controller and software rather than assuming that any Zigbee hub will expose every feature.

Confirm the model sold in your region as well as the controller’s device support. Aeotec’s SmartThings information explains the hub and automation context, but does not establish universal compatibility across hubs or connected devices. What can you automate?
Aeotec presents the sensor as an input for routines rather than a standalone lighting or security system. Its examples show how a compatible hub could use motion and temperature reports:

These are manufacturer-described possibilities, not assurances that every hub, app or connected product supports each automation. Check the capabilities of the specific devices and platform you plan to use.
How to troubleshoot pairing
If the sensor does not connect, Aeotec recommends checking pairing mode and starting near the hub. Its support guidance suggests about 30 feet as general advice, or as close as 10 feet for initial pairing. Those are setup suggestions, not a rated operating range.

- Confirm that the sensor is in pairing mode and that the hub is ready to add a device.
- Start pairing with the sensor near the hub; Aeotec suggests staying within about 30 feet generally, and as close as 10 feet for initial pairing.
- If pairing still fails, power-cycle the sensor and hub, then try again.
- If necessary, reset the sensor and repeat the pairing process using the hub’s device-add procedure.
Is the Aeotec Motion Sensor right for you?
It is most relevant if you already use a compatible Zigbee hub and want motion-triggered lighting, alerts or routines, with temperature reporting as an additional input. A useful comparison is whether you need motion alone or also want temperature reports; whether your current hub supports the exact sensor model; and whether SmartThings notifications and routines match the way you intend to use it.
