Global advertising spend is forecast to reach $1.30 trillion in 2026, while U.S. internet advertising revenue already hit $294.6 billion in 2025. Those figures describe different markets and measures: one is a global forecast of advertising spend, the other reported U.S. revenue from online ad sellers. This source-labeled roundup focuses on the most useful comparable figures rather than claiming 50 separate statistics; combining unlike measures or adding unsupported numbers would make the picture less reliable.
How much is spent on advertising worldwide?
WARC’s January 2026 forecast put global advertising spend at $1.30 trillion for 2026, up 9.1% year over year. It described that projected total as equivalent to about $150 for every person worldwide. These are forecasts, not final reported totals. WARC said nearly 80% of the projected global market flows to retail media, paid search and social platforms; it did not assign that combined share to any one of those channels.

Where global advertising spend is concentrated
In its December 2025 forecast, WARC estimated the United States would account for 35.3% of global advertising spend in 2025, or $421.1 billion, and China for 16.8%, or $200.1 billion. It forecast 6.9% growth in China for that year. The United Kingdom was projected to be the third-largest market and largest in Europe, with $58.1 billion in spend and 9.3% growth. WARC forecast that the ten largest markets together would account for 70.4% of global advertising expenditure in 2025.
#1 Best Overall
WARC estimated that Alphabet, Amazon and Meta together represented 56.1% of advertising spend excluding China in 2025, equivalent to $556.6 billion. It projected their combined share, still excluding China, at 58.0% in 2026 and 58.8% in 2027. These are WARC market estimates, not the same measure as a company’s share of worldwide digital advertising spending.
What is the U.S. advertising growth forecast for 2026?
IAB’s September 2026 buyer outlook projected 12.3% growth in U.S. advertising spend for the full year. That was 2.8 percentage points higher than IAB’s January forecast of 9.5%. The January study had estimated 5.7% growth for 2025 and put 2026 growth at 7.1%–7.8% after excluding major cyclical events. These are outlook estimates, not measured revenue results. IAB described the September study as drawing on more than 200 brand and agency decision-makers; its January study reported 205 respondents for the 2026 outlook and 204 for its 2025 estimate.
Major events help explain why the outlook is sensitive to timing. IAB’s January outlook attributed part of expected 2026 U.S. growth to the Winter Olympics, FIFA World Cup and U.S. midterm elections. Its September update said the stronger first half included major cyclical events. The full-year forecast therefore should not be read as a guaranteed underlying growth rate for every year or market.

U.S. channel growth projections
The table compares IAB’s September 2026 U.S. year-over-year projections with the estimates it published in January. The January column is the earlier forecast, not an updated result.
| U.S. channel | September 2026 projection | January projection | Revision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social media | 16.5% | 14.6% | +1.9 percentage points |
| Connected TV (CTV) | 15.6% | 13.8% | +1.8 percentage points |
| Commerce media | 13.6% | 12.1% | +1.5 percentage points |
| Digital video excluding CTV | 9.4% | 9.6% | −0.2 percentage points |
| Podcasts | 8.7% | 8.6% | +0.1 percentage points |
| Paid search | 8.1% | 8.2% | −0.1 percentage points |
| Digital out-of-home (DOOH) | 7.0% | 7.4% | −0.4 percentage points |
| Linear TV | −1.5% | −1.7% | +0.2 percentage points |
Social media, CTV and commerce media have the highest growth projections in IAB’s September channel set, while linear TV is still projected to contract. A smaller projected decline in linear TV is a revision, not a return to growth.
How much U.S. internet advertising revenue was reported in 2025?
IAB and PwC reported $294.6 billion in U.S. internet advertising revenue for 2025, up 13.9% from 2024. This is a reported revenue measure, not a forecast of total global ad spend. IAB says the report covers online ad revenue from websites, commercial online services, ad networks and exchanges, mobile devices, email providers and other online ad sellers. Its underlying data come from companies selling advertising online and public-company data; PwC does not audit the supplied information or provide assurance over it.
| U.S. internet ad category | 2025 revenue | Year-over-year change | Share of total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total internet advertising | $294.6 billion | +13.9% | 100% |
| Social advertising | $117.7 billion | +32.6% | 40.0% |
| Search | $114.2 billion | +11.0% | 38.8% |
| Display | $81.6 billion | +9.8% | 27.7% |
| Digital video | $78.0 billion | +25.4% | 26.5% |
| Commerce media | $63.4 billion | +18.0% | 21.5% |
| Podcast advertising | $2.9 billion | +17.6% | 1.0% |
These category shares overlap and should not be added together as if they were mutually exclusive. For example, digital video includes CTV, social video, online video and short-form video, so video can also be counted within social or other categories. IAB separately reported $162.4 billion in programmatic advertising revenue, up 20.5% year over year, and identified creator advertising spend at $37 billion in its 2025 report release.

IAB characterized 2025 growth as particularly strong in social, digital video and commerce media. It described commerce media as benefiting from first-party data and programmatic as an expanding automated buying channel. Those are IAB’s interpretations of the market, not separate causal measurements in the revenue table.
Which advertising platforms have the largest estimated revenue?
EMARKETER’s April 2026 release estimated worldwide net advertising revenue across all properties within the umbrella companies below. These figures are modelled estimates, not audited company-reported ad revenue.
| Company | 2025 estimate | 2026 estimate or forecast | 2027 forecast |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta | $196.17 billion | $243.46 billion | not stated (EMARKETER, April 2026) |
| $214.06 billion | $239.54 billion | not stated (EMARKETER, April 2026) | |
| Amazon | $68.64 billion | $82.07 billion | $97.07 billion |
In that same release, EMARKETER projected Meta’s share of worldwide digital ad spending at 26.8% in 2026 and said Google’s share was 26.4% at publication. It projected Amazon at 9.0%, up from 8.0% in 2024, and the three companies together at 62.3% of worldwide digital ad spending in 2026. These digital-ad-spend shares have a different scope from WARC’s estimates of the companies’ share of the advertising market excluding China.
EMARKETER says its estimates draw on proprietary quantitative and qualitative analysis, company and government data, research-firm data and interviews with industry executives; it regularly reevaluates its forecasts. Because the companies, measures and market boundaries differ by source, there is no single platform “market share” figure that can be inferred by comparing the revenue table with WARC’s concentration estimate.

Digital growth is not uniform
The U.S. revenue results and outlooks show distinct patterns by channel: social advertising and digital video grew quickly in the reported 2025 internet revenue data, while IAB’s 2026 projections put social, CTV and commerce media ahead of the other listed U.S. channels. Linear TV’s projected contraction contrasts with that digital growth. Revenue results and forward-looking spend projections are different kinds of evidence, so one should not be treated as confirmation of the other.

Discovery is spreading across more environments
IAB’s September outlook describes audiences as fragmenting among traditional search, conversational AI, commerce platforms and social media. It also says buyers increased attention to creator and influencer advertising, cohort-based advertising, publishers with first-party data and contextual advertising. The outlook identifies areas of buyer interest; it does not quantify a universal share of spend moving into each one.
Planning needs to account for change and concentration
WARC argues that structural and technological shifts are disrupting traditional static plans, rigid personas and stable channel definitions. Its global concentration estimate and EMARKETER’s digital-spend share estimate both point to substantial investment accruing to a small group of platform companies, but their different definitions should remain separate. For planning, compare figures by geography, reporting period, forecast vintage, metric and category definition, and account for event-driven effects where the source identifies them.
