The pages do not explain the difference, so neither number can be presented as a reconciliation of the other.

These are conflicting figures in Apple’s documentation. The cited pages do not say whether the mismatch reflects different counting methods, a later change, or another cause. The overview’s displayed category table should not be treated as a way to derive a replacement total: Apple does not explain a row-count method that resolves the two claims.

What Advanced Data Protection changes
Advanced Data Protection is optional. With standard data protection, Apple holds keys for much iCloud data and can help with recovery. When the feature is enabled, trusted devices retain sole access to keys for most of the iCloud data it covers. Apple’s security guide describes removing service keys available after authentication from Apple data-centre hardware security modules and rotating keys for affected services.

The protection is not universal. Apple says iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars are not end-to-end encrypted. Some metadata and usage information also remain under standard data protection, including certain timestamps, checksums, file information, and backup details. For third-party apps using CloudKit, developers must declare fields encrypted; Apple says CloudKit assets are protected automatically.

What this means for recovery
For data covered by end-to-end encryption, recovery becomes the user’s responsibility: Apple does not hold the keys needed to restore it. Apple’s current setup guidance requires at least one alternative recovery method, such as a recovery contact or recovery key; the device passcode or password is also a recovery method. A recovery key is a 28-character code. A recovery contact can provide a code but does not gain access to the account. If recovery methods are unavailable or forgotten, Apple says it cannot recover the covered data.
Requirements and eligibility
Apple’s current setup page lists these prerequisites for enabling Advanced Data Protection:

- A passcode or password set on the device.

- A recovery method, such as a recovery contact or recovery key.
Managed Apple Accounts and child accounts are not eligible. Requirements can change, so check Apple’s live setup instructions before turning the feature on.

With Advanced Data Protection enabled, access to iCloud.com is off by default. You can turn web access back on and approve temporary access from a trusted device.

Shared content generally remains end-to-end encrypted when all participants have Advanced Data Protection enabled. Apple documents exceptions: iWork collaboration, Photos Shared Albums, and content shared using “anyone with the link” receive standard data protection for the shared content.

Apple’s overview uses this wording: “With Advanced Data Protection, the number of data categories that use end-to-end encryption rises to 25 and includes your iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes and more.” Its security guide instead says: “For users who turn on Advanced Data Protection, the total number of data categories protected using end-to-end encryption rises from 14 to 23 and includes iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes and more.” Both are statements from Apple, not independent counts.

For a decision about enabling the feature, the discrepancy does not change the practical trade-off: it adds end-to-end encryption for most covered iCloud data, while shifting recovery responsibility to you and changing web access and some sharing behavior. Consult the current setup page for eligibility and recovery steps; do not assume either category total explains the other.
