Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a high-traffic site on a VPS, the dependable design is layered: let browsers and an edge network serve cacheable objects close to visitors, let NGINX on the VPS absorb repeated public requests, and use application or object caching only where profiling proves that database or application work is still expensive. Correct cache keys, explicit bypass rules, suitable TTLs, revalidation, and a purge plan matter as much as raw storage. This guide shows how to build that arrangement without exposing private pages or allowing a cold cache to overwhelm the origin.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
How a layered cache handles a request
A cache is a copy of an origin response retained for reuse. On a cache hit, the serving layer returns that copy instead of forwarding the request to the application. On a miss, the request travels inward, the response is evaluated against cache policy, and an eligible copy is stored for subsequent requests.

| Layer | What it stores | Best first use | Primary correctness concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser cache | Files and responses retained by an individual visitor’s browser | Versioned images, CSS, JavaScript, fonts and other immutable assets | Browser TTL and asset versioning must match deployments |
| Edge cache | Copies held at globally distributed points of presence | Public static files and carefully selected public HTML or API responses | Do not share user-specific representations |
| VPS reverse-proxy cache | Responses stored on the VPS disk and indexed in NGINX’s shared cache zone | Repeated public requests that reach the origin after an edge miss | Keys, bypass rules, disk capacity and purge behavior |
| Application or object cache | Computed fragments, query results or other application data | Repeated expensive work identified by profiling | Invalidation and data freshness belong to application logic |
A typical request therefore follows this path: browser, edge, NGINX on the VPS, then the application and database. A browser hit ends the path immediately. An edge hit avoids the VPS. An edge miss that becomes an NGINX hit still avoids application execution. Only a miss at every applicable layer reaches the origin workload.
Classify URLs before enabling any cache
Make a URL inventory before changing configuration. Caching is safe only when every request that can share a response is represented by the same cache key and every request that must remain private is bypassed.

Immutable static assets
Files whose names change whenever their contents change—such as app.8f31c.js or a hashed image—are the simplest target. They can receive long browser, edge and VPS lifetimes because a deployment creates a new URL. Fonts, stylesheets, JavaScript, images and downloadable files commonly fit this class after checking licensing and access requirements.
Public HTML
Landing pages, documentation and other anonymous pages may be shared when their output is identical for all visitors during the selected freshness period. Decide how quickly edits must appear and define a purge or versioned deployment step before using a long TTL.
Public APIs
An API response can be cacheable, but only if its query parameters, content negotiation headers and other representation-changing inputs are included in the key or excluded by policy. A response containing a user’s account, entitlement or location should not enter a shared cache unless the representation is demonstrably public and the key is complete.
Authenticated, transactional and administrative paths
Keep account pages, carts, checkout, payment flows, dashboards, admin paths and authenticated responses outside shared caching. Also bypass requests carrying authorization, preview or debugging parameters, or cookies that identify a session, login state or cart. A response that sets a user-specific cookie should not be written to a shared cache.
Inventory fields to record
- Path or hostname pattern.
- Whether the response is public, personalized or administrative.
- Methods used, especially whether anything other than GET or HEAD is valid.
- Query parameters that change the representation.
- Cookies or headers that change output.
- Acceptable staleness and the action that purges or versions the content.
Configure Cloudflare edge caching safely
Understand the default behavior
Cloudflare states that static content such as images, CSS and JavaScript is cacheable by default, while dynamic HTML is not cached by default. That default is a useful safety boundary: begin with static files, then add selected public responses through Cache Rules rather than making an entire hostname cacheable.
Choose query-string handling deliberately
| Cloudflare cache level | How requests are separated | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| No Query String | Requests are cached without using a query string as a separate resource dimension | Only when query parameters cannot alter the representation and the resulting behavior has been verified |
| Ignore Query String | Query strings are ignored for eligible static file extensions; Cloudflare documents this mode as limited to static extensions | Static assets where tracking parameters should not create separate copies |
| Standard | Different query strings are treated as different resources | The conservative choice when parameters can change output or when their meaning is not fully documented |
Do not remove query strings merely to improve the hit ratio. If ?size=large, ?lang=fr or a filter parameter changes the body, collapsing those requests can serve incorrect content. Conversely, allowing arbitrary tracking parameters to fragment an otherwise identical static file wastes edge storage.

Use Cache Rules as an allowlist
Create rules for known public paths or hostnames. A rule can set cache eligibility and an edge TTL for a selected response. Keep authentication, account, cart, checkout, admin and other user-specific paths excluded unless you can prove that the response is public and that every representation-changing dimension is in the key. Test the rule with anonymous and authenticated requests before expanding its scope.
Set TTLs and revalidation headers together
TTL expresses how long a stored response may be served without a fresh origin check. Set short values for rapidly changing public content and longer values for stable assets. At the origin, send explicit Cache-Control directives. Where content can be revalidated rather than regenerated, provide an ETag or Last-Modified value. A revalidation lets a cache ask whether its copy is still current instead of transferring the entire body.
Use Tiered Cache for distributed misses
Cloudflare’s Tiered Cache creates lower and upper tiers. When a lower-tier location misses, it asks an upper tier before contacting the VPS. This reduces the number of edge locations that can independently fetch the same object during a cold start or expiration event. It is particularly useful when visitors are spread across many regions and the VPS has limited bandwidth or application capacity.
Read edge outcomes, not just page speed
Monitor cache-ratio trends and the cache-status outcomes reported by the edge. A high ratio means more responses are served without contacting the origin; expired and revalidated responses indicate different freshness and validation paths. Break metrics down by hostname, path, status and geography so a strong static-file ratio does not hide a public HTML path that is missing on every request.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Build an NGINX reverse-proxy cache on the VPS
Prepare the VPS
- Reserve a filesystem path with enough free space for the expected response corpus and eviction headroom.
- Ensure the NGINX worker user can create and remove cache files.
- Confirm that the upstream application is addressed by a stable upstream block or socket.
- Decide how deployments purge or version cached responses before enabling long lifetimes.
- Keep sensitive paths in separate locations so a public cache policy cannot be inherited accidentally.
Define the cache path in the http context
proxy_cache_path belongs in the global http block, not inside a location. The following is an illustrative starting point; tune the size and inactivity period from measured traffic and disk capacity.
proxy_cache_path /var/cache/nginx/site levels=1:2 keys_zone=site_cache:100m max_size=20g inactive=60m;
The filesystem path holds response bodies and related files. The keys_zone is shared metadata in memory: it indexes cached objects and their state. Its size does not cap the total response bytes on disk. max_size limits the response store; NGINX’s cache manager removes entries as the limit is approached.

Attach the zone to a public location
Place the cache directives only on a location whose responses have been classified as shareable.
location /public/ {
proxy_pass http://app_upstream;
proxy_cache site_cache;
proxy_cache_methods GET HEAD;
proxy_cache_key $scheme://$host$request_uri;
proxy_cache_valid 200 301 302 10m;
proxy_cache_valid 404 1m;
proxy_cache_revalidate on;
proxy_cache_bypass $http_authorization $cookie_session $arg_preview $arg_debug;
proxy_no_cache $http_authorization $cookie_session $arg_preview $arg_debug $upstream_http_set_cookie;
add_header X-Cache $upstream_cache_status always;
}
Replace the example path and upstream with your own public route. The sample status lifetimes are starting values, not universal recommendations: shorten them for volatile responses and lengthen them only after correctness and purge behavior are proven. The diagnostic X-Cache header is useful during rollout; remove or restrict it if exposing cache state to clients is undesirable.
Keep methods conservative
NGINX caches GET and HEAD responses by default. The explicit proxy_cache_methods GET HEAD line documents that choice. Do not add POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE just to increase the hit ratio. Those methods usually carry mutations or request-specific bodies and should reach the application according to its normal semantics.
Design the cache key around representation
The sample key includes scheme, host and the complete request URI, including its query string. Host separation prevents one virtual host from receiving another host’s object. The URI preserves parameters that may change the representation. Add another dimension only when it changes the response—for example, a deliberate language or device variant. Do not append every cookie or header: that can turn each visitor into a separate cache entry and make hits rare.
If output varies on a header, either include a normalized version of that value in the key or bypass caching for that request class. The same rule applies to cookies. A session cookie must trigger bypass or be represented in a private, non-shared design; silently ignoring it is unsafe.
Use both bypass and no-cache controls
proxy_cache_bypass prevents a request from being satisfied by an existing cached object. proxy_no_cache prevents the response from being stored. Use both for authorization headers, session or cart cookies, preview and debug parameters, and any response that carries a user-specific Set-Cookie. Bypassing without suppressing storage can still poison the cache with a private response; suppressing storage without bypassing can still serve an old public copy to a private request.

The cookie and argument names in the example are illustrative. Match them to the actual application, and inspect response headers rather than assuming that a cookie named session is the only personalization signal.
Set status-specific freshness
proxy_cache_valid lets you give different statuses different lifetimes. A public success response might remain fresh for minutes, while a not-found response receives a much shorter lifetime so a newly created page appears promptly. Redirects and errors deserve their own policy. Never choose a long error TTL merely because errors are small; doing so can make a transient outage appear persistent.
Prevent a cold cache from overwhelming the origin
Reduce miss multiplication
Misses multiply when each edge location, query-string variant or cookie variant independently fetches the same object. Normalize irrelevant parameters, use a complete but minimal key, and enable Cloudflare Tiered Cache where global traffic would otherwise create many direct origin fetches. Keep a small public allowlist until miss behavior is visible.

During a deployment or mass expiration, warm only the high-value public URLs with a controlled request rate rather than crawling the entire site at once. If your NGINX build and policy support cache locking, configure it so one request fills a missing object while concurrent requests wait for that fill or follow an explicitly chosen fallback. Test the behavior under load; a lock that is too broad can increase latency, while no coordination can create a request stampede.
Separate capacity from freshness
A larger disk does not fix an overly short TTL, and a larger keys_zone does not create more response storage. Set freshness from content volatility and deployment practice; set max_size from disk capacity and the working set. Watch eviction, filesystem utilization, metadata pressure, origin request rate and upstream latency together.
Make deployments deterministic
Use content-hashed filenames for immutable assets, so a new build naturally creates new cache keys. For public HTML or API responses whose URLs do not change, perform a targeted purge or reload procedure after deployment. Do not rely on waiting for an arbitrary TTL when a security fix or emergency content change must appear immediately.
Best Value
Roll out the cache in eight controlled steps
- Inventory URL classes. Separate immutable assets, public HTML, APIs, authenticated pages and administrative paths.
- Set origin headers. Publish explicit
Cache-Controldirectives andETagorLast-Modifiedvalues where revalidation is appropriate. - Start narrowly. Cache static assets and a small public-path allowlist first.
- Complete the keys. Include every query, cookie, host, scheme or header dimension that changes a representation.
- Bypass private traffic. Exclude authorization, preview and debug requests and user-specific cookies; prevent their responses from being stored.
- Establish invalidation. Test purge and versioned-asset procedures before setting long TTLs.
- Load-test realistically. Include real query strings, cookie states and geographic distribution; record hits, misses, revalidations, origin requests, latency and errors.
- Expand gradually. Increase TTLs or add dynamic-cache rules only after observing correct content and a lower origin workload.
Validate behavior before trusting the hit ratio
Check response headers
Request the same anonymous URL twice and inspect both edge and VPS indicators. The first request should show a miss or fill; a subsequent request should show a hit if the response is eligible. Then repeat with an authorization header, a session cookie, a preview parameter and a cache-busting query to confirm each is bypassed.

Track the operational metrics
| Metric | What it reveals | Useful investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Edge cache ratio and status outcomes | How often visitors are served without an origin request, including expired or revalidated paths | Segment by hostname, path, status and region |
| NGINX hit, miss and bypass counts | Whether edge misses are being absorbed by the VPS and which rules exclude requests | Correlate with X-Cache and access-log fields |
| Origin requests per second | The workload that still reaches the application | Compare cold starts, deployments and traffic peaks |
| Upstream latency and error rate | Whether misses are exhausting application or database capacity | Look for bursts aligned with expiration or purge events |
| Disk usage, eviction and cache-manager activity | Whether the response store can hold the working set | Adjust max_size, TTL or asset strategy |
There is no universal cache-hit percentage, latency reduction or traffic threshold that applies to every high-traffic VPS site. Treat those as site-specific measurements, not promises. A lower origin request rate with correct content is more meaningful than a high ratio produced by caching only trivial assets.
Troubleshoot common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Every request is a miss | The location is not using the zone, the response is ineligible, or a bypass variable is always non-empty | Check effective NGINX configuration, response status, Set-Cookie, cache-control headers and bypass inputs |
| Different users see the same private content | Authentication or session signals were omitted from bypass logic or the key | Disable shared caching for the path immediately, purge affected objects, then add and test private-request exclusions |
| Origin load spikes after expiration | Many edge locations and VPS clients refill the same object independently | Use Tiered Cache, coordinate fills, warm critical URLs gradually and review key fragmentation |
| Updated content remains visible | TTL has not elapsed and no purge or version change occurred | Purge the affected path or deploy a new versioned URL; revise deployment invalidation |
| Disk fills even though the zone is large | The response store is governed by max_size, not the metadata zone |
Measure response bytes, set an appropriate disk limit and leave operating-system headroom |
| Hit ratio is low for static files | Tracking parameters or unnecessary headers create separate keys | Use the documented static query-string policy only where parameters cannot change the file, and normalize deliberately |
| Edge shows misses but VPS shows hits | The edge is not retaining the object or its rule/TTL differs from the VPS policy | Inspect edge eligibility, edge TTL, purge events and the request path before changing NGINX |
When an application or object cache is justified
HTTP caching removes whole responses from the application path. It does not make an uncached request’s database joins, template rendering or API calls cheaper. Add an application or object cache only after profiling identifies repeated expensive work that remains after edge and NGINX caching. Define the data’s invalidation rules, maximum staleness and memory budget before selecting an implementation. There is no requirement for every VPS site to add a particular object-cache product.
Cloudflare and NGINX have different jobs
| Decision | Edge layer | VPS NGINX layer |
|---|---|---|
| Where it serves | Globally distributed edge locations | Your VPS, close to the application |
| Primary benefit | Lower visitor distance and fewer requests reaching the VPS | Fewer application executions after an edge miss |
| Best initial scope | Static files and explicit public Cache Rules | Public locations with tested keys and bypass logic |
| Capacity concern | Edge policy, TTL and tier behavior | Disk response store, metadata zone and origin bandwidth |
| Invalidation concern | Edge purge and rule changes | Local purge, cache-manager behavior and deployment coordination |
Using both layers is not redundant. The edge handles geographic distribution and absorbs the largest share of repeat traffic; NGINX provides a controllable shield when an edge location misses or revalidates. Their policies must agree about eligibility, keys, privacy and freshness.
Quick Recap
Production checklist
- Static assets use versioned filenames or a tested purge process.
- Public HTML and APIs have documented freshness requirements.
- Authorization, session, cart, preview, debug and administrative requests bypass shared caching.
- Every representation-changing query, cookie and header is either keyed or excluded.
proxy_cache_pathis in thehttpcontext, with disk and metadata sized independently.- GET and HEAD are the only cached methods unless another method has a documented, tested reason.
- Origin responses provide explicit cache-control and revalidation metadata where appropriate.
- Cloudflare Cache Rules are narrow enough to audit, and Tiered Cache is considered for globally distributed traffic.
- Purge and deployment procedures have been exercised before long TTLs are enabled.
- Monitoring records edge outcomes, NGINX hits and bypasses, origin requests, latency, errors, evictions and disk usage.
- Load tests include realistic cookies, query strings, geography and expiration events.
