To align text in Adobe InDesign, first decide what should line up: paragraph edges, text within a frame’s height, or line baselines across columns and pages. Use paragraph alignment for left, centered, right, or justified text; Text Frame Options for vertical placement; and the baseline grid for consistent baselines. These controls affect different things and are not interchangeable.
Choose the alignment that matches your goal

Align a paragraph horizontally
- Select the text you want to format, or place the insertion point in the paragraph.
- Open the Paragraph panel or use the Control panel, then choose Align Left, Align Center, Align Right, Left Justify, Center Justify, Right Justify, or Full Justify.
Left, center, and right alignment position lines relative to the text frame’s edges. Justified alignment aligns text to both edges by adjusting spacing. Justify Left and Justify Right can leave the last line unexpanded; Justify All also justifies the last line. With the Adobe Paragraph Composer, justifying all lines shifts text to maintain consistent text density.

Set alignment toward or away from the spine
For a facing-page layout, Align Towards Spine places paragraphs right-aligned on left-hand pages and left-aligned on right-hand pages. Align Away From Spine reverses that behavior. Adobe notes these options do not affect text in vertical frames.

Position text vertically inside a frame
- Select the frame with the Selection tool, or click inside it with the Type tool.
- Choose Object > Text Frame Options.
- Under Vertical Justification, choose Top, Center, Bottom, or Justify.
Top is the default. Center and Bottom move the lines within the frame’s available height. Justify distributes lines vertically between the top and bottom, with spacing calculated from line baselines. In a multicolumn frame with only a few lines in the final column, this can create conspicuous white space.
Account for insets and the first baseline
Inset spacing controls the gap between frame edges and text. The First Baseline Offset determines where the first line begins; changing the top or bottom inset also changes the location of the first or last baseline. Adobe lists Ascent, Cap Height, Leading, x Height, and Fixed as First Baseline Offset choices. Leading or Fixed can be useful when aligning frames to a document baseline grid. Save repeated frame properties in an Object Style.

Align baselines across columns or pages
A baseline grid keeps text baselines consistent across a layout. Set the document grid, then apply it to the paragraphs that should follow it.

- Set the grid’s start position, choose whether it is relative to the page or top margin, and specify its increment. Adobe recommends matching the increment to body-text leading; its example uses 12 pt leading and a 12 pt increment.
- Select the paragraphs to align and choose Align To Baseline Grid in the Paragraph or Control panel.
The grid may not be visible until the zoom level exceeds its View Threshold. To align only the first line of a paragraph, choose Only Align First Line To Grid from the Paragraph or Control panel menu, then enable Align To Baseline Grid.

Use a custom grid for one text frame
For a frame that needs a different leading rhythm, open Object > Text Frame Options > Baseline Options and enable Use Custom Baseline Grid. Adobe describes a frame grid as overriding the document grid inside that frame.

- Leading changes have no visible effect: Check whether Align To Baseline Grid is enabled. Adobe says baseline-grid alignment overrides leading. Vertical justification can also determine how lines are distributed in the frame.
- Only a few lines are spread far apart: Check whether Vertical Justification is set to Justify, especially in a multicolumn frame.
- Characters move but the paragraph does not: Baseline Shift moves selected characters vertically without changing leading. It is suited to small character-level adjustments such as superscripts, not paragraph or frame alignment. See Adobe’s character-formatting instructions.
- The first line begins at an unexpected height: Review the frame’s First Baseline Offset and top inset in Text Frame Options.
- Objects align, but text baselines do not: The document grid is for aligning objects with nonprinting horizontal and vertical guides. Use a baseline grid when the target is text baselines.
