Select the paragraphs, then apply a paragraph style that includes bullets or configure them through the Paragraph panel’s Bullets and Numbering controls. Use paragraph styles for reusable lists; change the marker, spacing, and indents in the list settings.
Create a bulleted list

With the Type tool, select the paragraphs that should become list items. Each item should be its own paragraph.

For a reusable format, open Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles and apply a paragraph style configured with bullets. For a one-off list, use the Paragraph panel’s Bullets and Numbering controls to configure the selected paragraphs directly. Adobe documents both approaches in its guide to creating lists.

Press Enter on Windows or Return on macOS at the end of an item to create the next paragraph in the list. To stop a style-driven list, apply a paragraph style that has no bullet or numbering settings.

Change the bullet and its appearance
Select the list paragraphs and open the Bullets and Numbering controls. Choose a different bullet character, adjust its alignment and indents, or apply a character style to standardize the marker’s appearance. Adobe’s instructions for adding or changing bullet characters cover glyph selection and the option to remember the font.
By default, a bullet inherits formatting from the first character in its paragraph. If those first characters differ in font, weight, or color, markers may look inconsistent. Applying a character style to the bullets gives them consistent formatting without changing the list text.

Set the hanging indent and text spacing
In the list settings, Left Indent positions the paragraph, First Line Indent controls the first line relative to the other lines, and Tab Position controls the distance from the marker to the list text. A positive Left Indent paired with an equal negative First Line Indent creates a hanging indent: the bullet sits to the left of the text, while wrapped lines align with the text rather than the marker.

If the marker-to-text gap is wrong, check Tab Position as well as the indents; changing only the paragraph indent may move the whole item without correcting that gap.

Make a nested list or keep lists continuous
Simple indentation-based nesting
For a simple nested list, increase Left Indent on the paragraphs at the next level and adjust their bullet style if needed. This is suitable when the hierarchy is primarily visual and does not need a reusable set of list levels.
Reusable multilevel or running lists
For a repeated multilevel structure, define a list and create a paragraph style for each level. For a list that must continue across interruptions, stories, or documents, define the list in the paragraph style and apply that style to each included paragraph. Adobe explains these approaches in its documentation for defining and managing lists and creating a running list.

Convert generated bullets to literal text
InDesign’s automatic bullet markers are not regular text, so the Type tool cannot select them as characters. If a handoff or downstream task requires literal bullet characters, select the relevant paragraphs and choose the appropriate Convert Bullets to Text or Convert Bullets and Numbering to Text command from the Paragraph panel menu. After conversion, the markers are text rather than automatically generated list markers. Conversion changes the list’s behavior, so keep the automatic version if you still need the list settings to manage its markers.
