Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn a software-team context, ADO usually means Azure DevOps, Microsoft’s suite for planning work, managing code, automating builds and deployments, testing, and sharing packages. The abbreviation can mean other things elsewhere, so confirm the context when it appears outside Azure DevOps.
What does ADO mean in Azure DevOps?
Azure DevOps is a collection of services for coordinating software work across planning, code, testing, and delivery. Microsoft groups its core services into five areas: Azure Boards, Azure Repos, Azure Pipelines, Azure Test Plans, and Azure Artifacts. Their names describe different jobs rather than interchangeable tools.
| Service | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Azure Boards | Planning and tracking work, including work items and sprints. |
| Azure Repos | Hosting source code in version-control repositories, including Git repositories. |
| Azure Pipelines | Automating application builds, tests, and deployments. |
| Azure Test Plans | Managing and coordinating software testing. |
| Azure Artifacts | Hosting and sharing packages through feeds. |
Microsoft describes DevOps as bringing development and operations together to coordinate people, processes, and technology across planning, development, delivery, and operations. The Azure DevOps services support parts of that work; the exact setup depends on the team and project.
What do common Azure DevOps acronyms and terms mean?
PAT: Personal Access Token
A Personal Access Token (PAT) is an alternate credential for authenticating to Azure DevOps. Treat it as sensitive: anyone who obtains a usable token may be able to act within the permissions and scope it has. Before creating or using one, check Microsoft’s current PAT authentication guidance, since authentication recommendations and controls can change.

Git: distributed version control
A Git repository stores version-controlled code and its history. Git is distributed: developers can work with local copies of a repository and synchronize changes. Azure Repos is the Azure DevOps service area for repositories and source control.
Pipeline: build and release automation
A pipeline is an automation artifact used for build or release work. Azure Pipelines is the service for automating build, test, and deployment tasks. Teams’ pipeline configurations and terminology vary with their project and deployment setup, so a pipeline’s exact stages depend on how it was defined.

Project: a collaboration container
An Azure DevOps project is a container for collaboration and work planning within an organization in Azure DevOps Services, or within a project collection in Azure DevOps Server. It is a scope for organizing work and related resources, not a synonym for a single repository.
Authentication and authorization
Authentication checks who is connecting by validating supplied credentials. Authorization checks what that authenticated identity is allowed to access or do. In short: authentication answers “Who are you?”; authorization answers “What can you access?” Microsoft’s Azure DevOps glossary defines both concepts.

What do Azure Boards acronyms and planning terms mean?
Azure Boards uses work items and paths to organize and track work. Two terms that are easy to confuse are area paths and iteration paths:
- Area path: groups work by a team, product, or feature area.
- Iteration path: groups work by a sprint or other time period.
Boards also includes queries for finding and filtering work items, rollup for summarizing information across items, and sprints for planning work in time-boxed iterations. Microsoft’s Azure Boards glossary and overview explains these terms in their work-tracking context.

How to interpret an ADO acronym you encounter
- Check the context. If the surrounding discussion mentions Boards, repositories, pipelines, work items, or Microsoft development tools, ADO likely means Azure DevOps. In another field or organization, ask the author what the abbreviation means.
- Identify the function. Work tracking points to Boards; code and version history to Repos; automated build, test, or deployment work to Pipelines; test management to Test Plans; and package feeds to Artifacts.
- Check the deployment and interface. Azure DevOps Services and Azure DevOps Server documentation can cover shared concepts, but interface details and operational behavior may depend on the deployment and version.
- Look up security terms before acting. For authentication credentials such as PATs, follow Microsoft’s current security guidance rather than relying on an old team note or an unexplained acronym.
For definitions, Microsoft’s Azure DevOps glossary and Azure Boards glossary are useful references. Local teams may also use shortened terms or conventions that are specific to their own setup.
