This guide explains what Athena can query, what it takes to get started, how it is billed, and which data-layout choices lower the cost of each query. The “Adhiya Meets Athena” framing is used here only as an introduction to the topic.
What Athena does
AWS describes Athena as an interactive query service for analyzing data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL. “Interactive” means you submit a query and get results back in a session, which suits ad hoc questions, exploration of log or event files, and reporting queries. The service is serverless: AWS manages the query infrastructure, so there is nothing to provision, patch, or scale on your side. Your data stays where it is in S3.

What data Athena can query
For SQL queries, Athena works against data in S3 in place. It reads files whose formats AWS documents as CSV, JSON, ORC, Avro, and Parquet. Those formats differ in ways that matter for cost, covered in the optimization section below. Table definitions tell Athena how the files are structured, and those definitions are kept in one of two places:
- AWS Glue Data Catalog, the managed metadata store that most Athena users start with.
- An external Hive metastore, for organizations that already maintain one.
Beyond S3, Athena SQL can run federated queries through connectors to other data sources. Connector availability and configuration vary by source, so check the connector documentation for the system you need before planning around it. Athena also supports Apache Spark workloads, which are a separate way to process data from the SQL query path. Treat the two as distinct capabilities when you evaluate the service.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
How you access Athena
AWS documents several routes into the service: the AWS Management Console, the API, the AWS CLI, the AWS SDKs, and the JDBC and ODBC drivers. The drivers let existing BI tools and applications send SQL to Athena without custom code, which is often the practical reason teams adopt it.
Setup essentials
Before your first query, three things need to be in place:

- Permissions. The identity running queries needs access to Athena, to the S3 buckets holding the source data, and to the catalog that defines the tables.
- A catalog with table definitions. Tables must exist in the Glue Data Catalog or an external Hive metastore before you can query them.
- A query result location. Athena writes results to an S3 location you choose. The pricing documentation refers to this as the S3 working directory, and it is a storage location you pay for like any other S3 data.

AWS lists two pricing approaches for Athena SQL. The first is per-query billing, charged according to the amount of data each query scans. The second is capacity-based pricing through Capacity Reservations, charged according to the query compute capacity you reserve. The two work on different units, so they should be compared on the same workload.

| Question | Per-query billing | Capacity Reservations |
|---|---|---|
| What drives the charge | Data scanned by each query | Query compute capacity reserved, per AWS pricing documentation |
| What reduces it | Scanning less data (see optimization section) | Reserving the capacity your workload actually needs |
| Key check before choosing | Measured bytes scanned for your typical queries | Steady concurrency and processing demand over time |
| Typical trade-off | Costs follow usage, but poorly laid-out data can make each query expensive | Gives more control over processing capacity, but you pay for reserved capacity whether or not it is fully used |
Two related charges apply in many setups. AWS Glue Data Catalog charges may apply if you use it for table metadata, and federated queries can invoke AWS Lambda, which has its own standard charges. S3 storage and requests for the source data and query results are billed under S3 pricing. Current rates vary by region and change over time, so check the AWS Athena pricing page for your region before estimating costs.
Use workgroups to control spend
Workgroups are how Athena separates workloads. A workgroup can represent a team, an application, or a class of queries. AWS documents that you can set limits on the amount of data a query or a workgroup can process, and track costs per workgroup. This is the main built-in control for preventing one runaway query from driving up the bill, so set limits before giving a shared group of users access.

Reducing the data each query scans
Under per-query billing, the most direct cost lever is how much data each query reads. Three techniques do most of the work:
- Compression. Compressed files are smaller, so fewer bytes are scanned for the same answer.
- Partitioning. Organizing data into partitions, such as by date or region, lets queries that filter on the partition key skip the rest of the data.
- Columnar formats. Parquet and ORC store data by column rather than by row. A query that selects three columns out of fifty reads only those three, whereas row-based text formats such as CSV and JSON generally require reading whole records.
AWS’s FAQ states: “With per query billing, you can save 30% to 90% per query and get better performance by compressing, partitioning, and converting data into columnar storage formats.” This is an AWS-published claim, not an independent benchmark, and the FAQ page did not show a publication year. Your savings depend on your data and queries. The useful way to test the claim is to compare bytes scanned before and after converting one representative table, then check the difference in your own billing data.

Where Athena fits and where it may not
Athena suits data that already sits in S3 and questions that do not need a dedicated, always-on warehouse. Whether it is the better choice than a conventional data warehouse or another query engine depends on factors the AWS material does not compare head to head. When you evaluate the options, compare:
- Where the data already lives, and how much would need to be loaded or copied.
- How often queries run and how quickly results are needed.
- Expected concurrency, meaning how many people or applications query at the same time.
- Which connectors and SQL features your tools require.
- Operational effort, including permissions, catalogs, and layout maintenance.
- Total cost across every AWS service involved, not only the Athena line item.
Vendor product pages describe what a service does, not how it performs against alternatives, so run your own representative queries before committing to a pattern.
The serverless label also needs a precise reading. It describes who manages the infrastructure. It does not mean that queries, storage, catalog lookups, Lambda invocations for federated queries, or result files are free.

The Bottom Line
Athena is the right starting point when your data already sits in S3 and you need SQL answers without running a query cluster. Keep three things in view from the start: set workgroup limits, choose a pricing model based on measured usage, and convert or partition large tables so each query scans less.
