They do not, by themselves, establish which element was involved, what text it contained, or whether an action succeeded. Pair them with structured page observations and verify the result in the application.
Choose evidence that matches the claim
Before capturing anything, decide what a reviewer needs to verify. A report might need to show the visible appearance, identify a text label or control, document a sequence, or establish the final application result. Those are different evidence needs.

Playwright’s documentation describes screenshots as complementary to accessibility snapshots: images show appearance, while structured snapshots expose page text and element structure. For an agent report, use both when a reviewer needs visual context and exact element identity. Select the right screenshot scope
Viewport
Capture the viewport when the report concerns what was visible at a particular moment. This keeps the image focused, but content below the fold will not be represented.

Element
Capture a particular element when the claim is about one component, such as a chart, dialog, or error panel. A focused capture can make the relevant detail easier to inspect. Preserve a structured snapshot or other observation alongside it if reviewers need to know the element’s exact identity.
Full page
Use a full-page capture when content outside the initial viewport matters. Check that the resulting image remains legible and that the relevant section can be found; a long image is not automatically clearer evidence.

Playwright supports viewport, element-targeted, and full-page screenshots, as well as image format and resolution choices. Build a reviewable evidence trail
- State the claim. Say what the capture is intended to show, such as a chart rendering or a visible error state.
- Capture at a meaningful checkpoint. Take the screenshot after the relevant page state appears, rather than collecting images at every step without a reason.
- Record complementary observations. Use a structured snapshot or tool output for text, element names, and stable references when those details matter. A screenshot is approximate evidence for interaction, not an exact identifier.
- Connect artifact and run. Store each item with enough context for a reviewer to tell when and why it was captured and which report claim it supports. This is a practical reporting convention, not a field required by the cited tools.
- Check the actual outcome. Inspect the application state or result. Distinguish what the agent says it did from what the evidence demonstrates; an image alone does not prove that an action succeeded.
OpenAI’s computer-use guidance recommends bounding and verifying execution and checking the actual outcome rather than relying only on the agent’s final answer. It also warns that computer use can affect real accounts and data. OpenAI computer-use API documentation

Keep evidence legible, useful, and limited
- Choose resolution and format for readability. Use a scale and image format that preserve the detail reviewers need without creating unnecessarily large artifacts. - Capture only what the report needs. Screenshots can include account information, personal data, or other sensitive page content. Restrict the environment and capture scope to the task’s needs.
- Control access and retention. Decide who can see the artifacts and how long they remain available. Do not assume different agents or services use the same retention policy.
- Bound agent execution. Set appropriate step, time, or cost limits; provide a way to cancel; and retain user control over consequential actions. Treat screen content as untrusted input.
These safeguards follow the risk guidance in OpenAI’s computer-use documentation. Retention details are product-specific: OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent help page says chats, browsing history, and associated screenshots remain until deleted by the user, and that deleted chats and screenshots are removed from OpenAI systems within 90 days. It also describes data use for Plus and Pro, including visual browser screenshots, under the applicable privacy policy and model-improvement opt-in. Those statements apply to ChatGPT agent and should not be generalized to other systems.

Does a screenshot prove that an AI agent completed an action?
No. It shows visual state at capture time. Verify completion in the application and report what the evidence actually establishes.
