Add a Spanish keyboard without changing the language of your iPhone’s menus: go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, choose a Spanish option, then select it from the keyboard switcher while typing.
Add a Spanish keyboard on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard.
- Choose the Spanish keyboard variant you want. The choices shown can depend on your iOS version and locale.

Switch to Spanish while typing
Open an app where you can type. Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the keyboard you want to use. The button’s appearance can vary depending on the keyboards you have added.
Choose between a separate keyboard and bilingual typing
A separate Spanish keyboard is the straightforward option: select it from the switcher when you want to type in Spanish, and switch back when needed. Apple also supports bilingual typing for some language pairs, so you can type in two supported languages without switching keyboards. Its example is English (U.S.) with Spanish (Latin America); that does not mean every language pair has this option. See Apple’s keyboard guide for details.

Type Spanish accents on the onscreen keyboard
Press and hold the letter related to the accent you need, then slide to or tap the desired character. For example, press and hold e to choose é. Apple describes this method in Write with the onscreen keyboard on iPhone.
Keep the iPhone’s display language unchanged
Adding a keyboard is an input setting; it does not by itself change the language of your menus or your region. Apple manages those separately under Settings > General > Language & Region. When you add a keyboard for another language, that language is also added to Preferred Languages, but this does not automatically make it the iPhone’s display language. Reorder or remove a keyboard
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Reorder: Tap Edit, drag the reorder control next to a keyboard, then tap Done.
- Remove: Swipe left on the keyboard you want to delete, then tap Delete.
Use a physical keyboard instead
You do not need a hardware keyboard to type Spanish on the iPhone’s onscreen keyboard. If you use a Magic Keyboard, Apple documents switching among language keyboards with Control-Space. Hardware keyboard layouts are a separate setting that can help when the physical key labels do not show the characters you need.
