To add visible page numbers to a PDF in your browser, use an online PDF numbering tool: upload the file, choose which pages to number and where the numbers should appear, then process and download the edited PDF. A browser’s built-in PDF viewer only shows your position in the document; it does not insert numbers into the file.

What to check before uploading a PDF

Page range: Decide whether numbering should start on the cover or on a later page, and whether the final pages should be included.

Number sequence: If the cover should remain unnumbered but the next page should display “1,” check whether the tool lets you set both the first page to number and the first number to show.

Placement and style: Make sure the header or footer location, alignment, and format suit the document. A number near an existing footer or page edge may be hard to read.

Service limits: Check the current file-size, page-count, and task limits before uploading; provider limits are not universal.

Why the browser page counter is not enough
A PDF viewer’s page indicator tells you where you are while viewing a document; it does not add a visible number to each page. Adobe documents a URL fragment such as #page=[page number] for opening a PDF at a specified page. That is navigation, not a page-numbering edit. To put numbers in the document itself, use a PDF editing or numbering service and save the resulting file.
