Microsoft Word Mobile can apply true page borders, but the exact button labels vary a bit between iPhone/iPad and Android, and sometimes the option is missing depending on the file type.
This guide covers the 2024 quick steps to add a page border in the Word mobile app, plus what to do when the feature isn’t available (with reliable alternatives that still produce the same print-ready result).

What counts as a page border in Word Mobile
A “page border” in Word is a document-level frame drawn on the page margins. It doesn’t wrap only around text; it’s meant to be printed on every page (or selected pages) and is controlled by border style, color, width, and “Apply to” scope.

In most cases, you’ll use it for formal documents like reports, school assignments, and letters where a consistent framing line is required.

Before you start: prerequisites and version checks
Page borders are supported in Word mobile, but older app builds and certain file formats can hide the control. Before you troubleshoot, confirm you’re on a current app version.
Check Word app version
- iPhone/iPad: Open App Store → search Microsoft Word → check the version and install any update.
- Android: Open Google Play Store → search Microsoft Word → check version and update.
As of 2024, the UI typically routes border settings through the page/layout tools. If your interface looks older (fewer layout options, fewer “Design/Layout”-type controls), update first.
Confirm your document type
Page border settings work best with editable Word documents (.docx). If you’re working in a restricted or very specialized template format, the border option may not appear.
Recommended Free Tools
Add a page border on iPhone or iPad (Word app)
Use these steps in the Word app on iOS. Button names can shift slightly, but the sequence should match your document tools.
- Open your document in the Word app.
- Tap the Home tab (if you land somewhere else, use the top toolbar to switch back).
- Find and tap Layout (sometimes shown as Document tools depending on build).
- Tap Page Borders or Borders. If you see Page Background first, look for the Page Border entry in that menu.
- Choose your Style (solid, dotted, etc.).
- Set Color and Width.
- Select the Apply to option (commonly Whole document).
- Tap Done or the back arrow to apply.
If your menu shows border preview options (like “None,” “Box,” “Outside,” or similar), pick the one that matches the look your teacher or template requires.
Add a page border on Android (Word app)
Android typically uses the same underlying border tool, but the toolbar labels differ slightly.
- Open the document in the Word app.
- Tap the Home tab.
- Tap Layout (or Document if that’s what your build uses).
- Tap Page Borders.
- Select Style, then set Color and Width.
- Choose the Apply to scope, usually Whole document.
- Tap OK, Done, or the checkmark icon to confirm.
After applying, scroll to confirm the border shows on the top and bottom edges and doesn’t get cut off in Print Preview.
Choose border style, color, width, and apply scope
Once you open the page border settings, you’re usually making four decisions: how it looks, where it applies, and how thick it is.
Style
Common options include solid lines and dotted lines. If you need a classic “frame,” choose a boxed style or a setting that draws on all sides.
Color
Pick standard colors (black/gray) for school use. If you’re printing in grayscale, avoid very light grays that may disappear.
Width (thickness)
Width is typically measured in points. If your prompt specifies a numeric thickness (example: 1 pt), match it as closely as you can using the Width slider or picker.

This is the “where does it show” control. Choose one of the following when available:
- Whole document (most common)
- This section (when the file has sections)
- First page only (common for cover-page variations)
- Selected pages (if your mobile UI supports selection)
If you don’t see Page Borders in Word Mobile
This is the most common blocker in 2024: the UI doesn’t show Page Borders even though the desktop app has it. Try these fixes in order.
1) Update the Word app
Open the app store/play store and update Microsoft Word. After updating, fully close and reopen the document.

2) Check you’re editing, not viewing
If the document opens in a read-only mode (for example, from email or as a protected file), some formatting tools won’t appear. Look for an “Edit” button or ensure you can type in the document.
3) Convert or re-save as .docx
If the file is in an unusual format, re-save it as a .docx in a compatible editor (Word desktop or Word for the web). The mobile page border tool is most reliable in standard .docx files.
4) Try inserting the border via Word for the web
If mobile hides the feature, you can still make the change without a desktop PC by using Word for the web in a browser (see workaround below).
Workarounds that still get you a real page border
When Word Mobile won’t show page borders, you still have dependable options that produce the same final output. Use the one that fits your constraints.
Workaround A: Apply the border in Word for the web, then open on mobile
Word for the web exposes the page border controls more consistently. After applying, the border should sync back to your mobile device via your Microsoft account.

- Go to Layout → Page Borders.
- Set Style, Color, Width, and Apply to.
- Save the document.
- Reopen it in the Word mobile app to confirm the border appears.
Workaround B: Apply the border in Word desktop (Windows or macOS)
This is the most complete option and gives the most control over sections and “first page” behavior.
- Open the file in Word on your computer.
- Go to Design or Layout (varies by Word version) → Page Borders.
- Adjust style/color/width and choose Apply to.
- Save, then open the updated file on your phone.
Workaround C: Use Word shapes as a frame (last resort)
If you absolutely can’t access page border settings, you can draw a rectangle and position it to match the page margins. It’s not as “print-aware” as a true page border, but it can be workable for simple single-page documents.
Rank #4
- Insert a Rectangle shape (in the Insert tools).
- Set No fill and a Line color matching your border.
- Resize and align to the page edges you want.
- Copy the shape to each page or set it to repeat per page if your build supports it.
For multi-page papers, this approach can be fragile when margins or zoom change—test before submitting.

- Border doesn’t show on the first page: You likely selected Apply to as Whole document incorrectly or chose a “first page only” setting. Reopen border settings and confirm the scope.
- Border is cut off at the edges: Your page margins may be too small. Increase margins (Layout → Margins) and then re-apply or confirm the border alignment.
- Border repeats on every section incorrectly: Section breaks change how “Apply to” behaves. Choose “This section” or “Whole document” deliberately.
- Border appears only on some pages: That usually means sectioning or a “first page only” scope. Check for section breaks and reapply.
- Print output doesn’t match screen: Always check Print Preview (or export to PDF and preview). Some printer scaling settings can clip borders.
Border vs. text-box frames: when to use each
If your goal is a formal, consistent frame, a true page border is the correct tool. Text boxes and shapes can look right but often fail when documents reflow.

| Goal | Best approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Print-ready frame on every page | Page Borders | Designed for page layout and consistent rendering |
| Decorative border around a specific paragraph | Paragraph border or text box | Fits around content instead of the full page |
| Single-page certificate | Shape frame (if needed) | Fewer pages means fewer alignment issues |
Quick comparison: Word Mobile vs Word for the web vs Word desktop
Use this as a decision guide when you hit friction on mobile.
| Option | Border control | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Word Mobile (iOS/Android) | Good, but UI may vary; sometimes missing | You just need quick formatting on the go |
| Word for the web | Usually reliable for page borders | Mobile hides the option, but you have a browser |
| Word desktop (Windows/macOS) | Most complete and consistent | Complex section rules or strict templates |
FAQs
Can I add a page border in Word Mobile without a Microsoft account?
You can open documents locally in some scenarios, but border settings are more dependable when the document syncs properly. If you’re editing a protected or cloud-managed file, ensure you have permissions.
Why is the Page Borders option missing on my phone?
Common reasons include an outdated Word app, read-only access, or the document being in a format that the mobile editor doesn’t fully support. Update Word and try again; if it still doesn’t appear, use Word for the web as a workaround.
Will the border show when I export to PDF?
Usually yes, because page borders are part of the document layout. Export (or preview) and verify, especially if you’re using unusual margins or a printer scaling setting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

In the Page Borders settings, change Apply to to First page (or equivalent wording). If your document uses sections, you may need to apply settings per section for accurate behavior.
Bottom Line
To add a page border in Word Mobile in 2024, open your document, go to Layout, choose Page Borders, set style/color/width, and apply it to Whole document (or the correct scope). Then confirm via scroll-through and Print Preview or PDF export.
If Page Borders doesn’t show up, don’t waste time fighting the mobile UI—apply the border in Word for the web (office.com) or Word desktop and the change will sync back.
