On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. On Android with Gboard, open Gboard Settings > Languages > Add keyboard, choose a language and layout, then tap Done.
Add a language to the built-in iPhone keyboard
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard.
- Select the language you want. Repeat these steps to add more keyboards.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says that adding another language keyboard also adds that language to Preferred Language Order. For some languages, the keyboard can automatically switch between the two languages you use most often; automatic switching is not available for every language. Switch languages while typing on iPhone
When the keyboard is open, touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the keyboard you want to use. The available key may look different depending on the keyboard layout.

- Open an app with a text field and tap the field to display Gboard.
- Tap Gboard’s Settings icon, then go to Languages > Add keyboard.
- Select a language and the layout you want, then tap Done.
You can also add a language through Android settings. Google documents this path: Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Languages. Select the language and layout, then tap Done. Menu names and paths can differ by device and Android version. Google notes that some steps work only on Android 7.0 and up. Its instructions are in Google’s Gboard Help for typing in a different language on Android.

Adding a language to Gboard does not change Android’s device language. Talk-to-text is not available for every language.
Switch languages in Gboard on Android
With Gboard open, touch and hold the space bar, then choose the language you want. If the language does not appear, check that it has been added in Gboard’s language settings.

If you use Gboard on iPhone or iPad
Open the Gboard app, go to Languages > Add language, and add the language. While typing, touch and hold the Globe key and select the keyboard. Google says these Gboard settings do not change the iPhone or iPad’s system language. Its support page lists Gboard for iOS 9 and up and a limit of three supported languages at a time. If your Android phone does not use Gboard
These Android steps are specifically for Gboard. If another keyboard appears when you tap a text field, open that keyboard’s language or settings menu and follow its displayed labels. The exact manufacturer-specific paths are not established by Google’s Gboard instructions.
