Cardano and the XRP Ledger document small base-level network fees, but a recipient’s total cost also depends on exchange rates, liquidity, providers and payout fees. Their timing measures are not directly comparable, and the adoption examples available describe different kinds of activity.
What the network fee comparison does—and does not—tell you
A ledger fee pays for a transaction on that network. It is not the same as the all-in cost of sending money across a border. A remittance may also involve converting fiat to crypto and back, exchange spreads, liquidity, custody, a payment provider, compliance, and local cash-out or payout charges.

Cardano’s developer documentation describes a minimum fee formula of a × transaction size + b. Its live fee documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 44 lovelace per byte and a base fee of 155,381 lovelace, and estimates roughly 0.17–0.20 ADA for a typical simple transfer. Larger transactions and transactions involving scripts or reference scripts can cost more; the protocol parameters can also change through governance. The ADA estimate is not a fixed dollar price.

The protocol destroys this fee rather than paying it to a recipient. The cost can rise under network load, and users specify a fee before signing; a fee that is too low may lead to rejection or queueing.

The figures above describe network costs, not a matched fiat-to-fiat payment. To decide which option is cheaper for a real transfer, compare the amount the sender pays with the amount the recipient receives for the same currency pair, corridor, payment method and time. Include conversion rates, spreads, liquidity and endpoint fees; a protocol-fee comparison alone cannot establish a cheaper payout.
How to interpret transaction speed and settlement
Cardano: block timing is not finality
Cardano documentation describes observable mainnet time granularity of 20 seconds. It distinguishes that timing from confidence in a transaction: confidence increases as blocks deepen, over minutes or hours, while finality under the described Ouroboros design can take approximately one day. These are protocol-documentation descriptions, not a measured remittance benchmark. A block interval should not be presented as the time until a payment is irrevocably settled.
Hydra: a different setting, with participant constraints
Hydra Heads are off-chain mini-ledgers shared by a small, known group. Transactions within a Head can be near-instant and configurable down to zero fee, subject to communication among its participants. Funds enter and the agreed final state exits through Layer 1 operations. That arrangement is not equivalent to an open public transfer between arbitrary senders and recipients.

XRP Ledger: no matched settlement-time result
The XRPL materials considered here explain transaction fees and cross-currency payment mechanics but do not provide a same-method measurement of XRP settlement time against Cardano for a real payment corridor. On this evidence, a precise XRP-versus-ADA speed winner cannot be established.
How cross-currency payments work on the XRP Ledger
An XRPL cross-currency payment is atomic: it either completes as specified or does not. The ledger can automatically route a conversion through XRP when that route is cheaper than a direct conversion. This can make XRP a bridge asset within a payment path, rather than merely the asset being transferred from one wallet to another.
Routing depends on a usable path and sufficient market liquidity. Auto-bridging does not guarantee a liquid or competitive conversion for every currency pair, nor does the ledger feature itself supply fiat cash-in or cash-out, a recipient’s bank payout, or a provider’s services.

What the adoption examples show—and what they cannot prove
Ripple’s product documentation identifies remittances and business-to-business payments as use cases for its On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) service. This is evidence of a commercial payment offering, not evidence that every XRP transfer uses ODL, that ODL serves every corridor, or that its customer prices or payment volumes are comparable with ADA’s.

For Cardano, Input Output Global reported on Cardano.org on March 6, 2026, that ADA payments were supported in 137 SPAR stores in Switzerland. That is a specific merchant-acceptance example, not a measure of international payment volume or routine use. The Cardano Foundation’s 2025 Activity and Financial Report, published April 2, 2026, also described a US$10 million asset-pool initiative and work on token standards. Those are ecosystem and tokenization developments, not evidence of cross-border payment scale.
These examples are different kinds of evidence: one describes a commercial payment service, another a retail acceptance footprint, and another wider ecosystem activity. They do not establish a comparable adoption ranking, cross-border volume, corridor reach or customer cost.

How to choose for a real payment
Start with the actual corridor and payment route, not the token’s headline network fee. For both options, check whether the sender and recipient can access the relevant asset and convert it to the currencies they need. Then compare the amount received and the total amount paid under the same conditions.
- Check availability: Confirm that the relevant exchanges, payment providers and payout methods support both ends of the corridor.
- Check liquidity and conversion: For an XRPL cross-currency path, verify that a suitable route and sufficient liquidity exist. For either option, account for the exchange rate and spread when entering and leaving the asset.
- Check the complete price: Include the network fee, provider or custody charges, conversion costs and recipient-side fees—not just the ledger transaction cost.
- Check timing at the endpoint: Distinguish ledger inclusion and confidence from the time a recipient can actually access the converted funds. Cardano’s documented block timing is not finality, and the sources here do not provide a matched corridor settlement-time test.
- Check evidence for the service you intend to use: A feature, merchant-acceptance example or commercial product description does not by itself show that a particular route is available or economical for your transfer.
Without those corridor-specific details, the defensible comparison is limited: both networks document small base-level ledger fees, but the reviewed sources do not establish which one delivers a cross-border payment more cheaply overall, faster at the recipient end, or at greater comparable scale.
