An action camera’s waterproof rating applies to a specific model in a specific configuration—not to every camera, accessory or use of that camera. Check the bare-camera depth, the limit with its exact compatible housing, and any required guards, brackets or closed covers. For scuba diving or fast-moving water, use a housing rated for your model and planned depth.
What does “waterproof” mean for an action camera?
It means the manufacturer specifies a limit for a particular camera and setup. A bare camera’s depth rating and a housing’s rating are separate claims; neither is an independent test result or a guarantee that a damaged, incorrectly assembled or improperly closed unit will keep water out.

Before entering the water, identify the exact camera model and check its current manual. Confirm whether its rating requires a lens guard, mounting bracket, assembled modules or fully closed battery, card and USB covers. A rating for one model or accessory does not automatically apply to another.

Do you need a waterproof case?
For splashes and shallow water
You may not need a separate case if your exact camera is rated for the planned exposure and all required guards and covers are correctly installed. Do not treat “splash-proof” as “submersible”: the Insta360 GO 3S and GO Ultra Action Pods are rated IPX4, while their camera units have separate underwater ratings.

For scuba or high-speed water
Choose the manufacturer-compatible housing for your exact model and intended depth. A case that looks similar or fits physically is not enough: compatibility and depth ratings are model-specific. Insta360 advises a Dive Case for X3 in high-velocity water, and its ONE R guidance recommends one in rough water. Check the case instructions for assembly, seals and closure before every use.

- Model and depth: Match the rating to your exact camera and planned maximum depth, including whether the stated limit is bare or with a case.
- Required configuration: Install any specified lens guard or bracket and assemble the camera exactly as directed.
- Seals and covers: Check that seals are intact and clean, and that battery, card and port covers are fully closed and free of debris.
- Housing compatibility: Confirm the case is approved for your camera model and rated for the intended depth. Follow its closure instructions.
- Water movement and image needs: A shallow-water rating does not settle whether a setup is suitable for fast-moving water. For 360-degree cameras, also consider underwater stitching: Insta360 says X3’s image stitching is affected by refraction without its Dive Case.
- Loss prevention: A floating grip or tether may help keep a camera from being lost, but it does not increase the camera’s waterproof depth.
How should you care for a camera after saltwater?
Follow the care instructions for your model rather than applying one rinse routine to every action camera. Insta360 advises freshwater rinsing or soaking and thorough drying for GO Ultra and GO 3S after saltwater exposure. Its X3 guidance emphasizes intact seals and clean cover areas. Consult your camera’s manual for the exact post-water steps and inspect the seals and covers before the next use.
