acadbtn.dll is an Autodesk AutoCAD resource file, so a missing or unreadable copy usually means the AutoCAD installation needs repair rather than Windows needing a replacement DLL. Do not download it into System32; restore it through the matching Autodesk installation, then investigate quarantine, migration, or Windows corruption if the error remains.
What this file actually does
acadbtn.dll is described as the AutoCAD Button Resource Library and is associated with the ACADBTN Dynamic Link Library. Autodesk is the developer and publisher.
This is not a Windows component. It is an application file used by AutoCAD and, particularly in older releases, by toolbar and button resources stored in the product installation. Autodesk documentation identifies the file in an AutoCAD installation’s Support directory, where it can be involved when custom menus, toolbars, or CUI files are migrated from an older release.
That gives the file an important distinction:
- It belongs to a particular Autodesk product and release.
- It is not normally installed in
C:WindowsSystem32. - It is not normally installed in
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - It is not a file that should usually be registered with
regsvr32. - A 32-bit copy does not automatically belong in
SysWOW64; the correct location is determined by the AutoCAD product that loads it.
Public file catalogues report a 32-bit build with version 15.0.6.30 and a size of approximately 0.31 MB. Those values are catalogue metadata, not an Autodesk-supported standalone download specification. Older historical versions may also exist, so do not use a version number alone to select a replacement.

Newer Autodesk products may use other button-resource formats instead of the older DLL in some situations. Therefore, copying acadbtn.dll from one AutoCAD generation into another is not a dependable repair.

Fix 1: Confirm which program is asking for the file
Before changing Windows files, identify the executable that displays the message. AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, an AutoCAD-based product, and an unrelated program can produce different repair paths.
- Close the error dialog.
- Start the affected application again and record its name.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- Check whether the target is AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, or another Autodesk-based application.
- If the dialog appears while opening a drawing or another program, note that program instead.
If a different application names acadbtn.dll, do not assume that installing AutoCAD will solve it. Find the application that placed the file on the system and repair that application from its own official installer.
Also record the full wording:
- “acadbtn.dll is missing from your computer”
- “acadbtn.dll was not found”
- “There was a problem starting acadbtn.dll”
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “acadbtn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
The wording helps separate a missing file from a damaged file or missing dependency.
Fix 2: Check the AutoCAD installation and Support folder
The correct copy should be with the AutoCAD installation that uses it, commonly in that product’s Support directory for older releases.
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Open the drive where AutoCAD is installed.
- Browse to the affected AutoCAD product folder.
- Look for a folder named Support.
- Search that folder for
acadbtn.dll. - If you have more than one AutoCAD release installed, check each product’s own folder separately.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures if that tab is available.
- Check that the file is associated with the expected Autodesk installation rather than an unrelated download location.
Do not replace the file merely because it has a different catalogue-reported version. AutoCAD releases can use different files and resources.
If the file is present in the correct product directory but AutoCAD still reports it missing, do not copy it elsewhere yet. The problem may be a damaged dependency, an incorrect search path, a blocked file, or a mismatch between the application and its resources.
Try launching AutoCAD again after confirming the location. If the error remains, continue with repair.

Newer products using the Autodesk Install Service
Some newer Autodesk products do not provide the older Control Panel repair workflow. If Repair is unavailable:

- Locate the exact AutoCAD product and release you own or have installed.
- Download the installer for that same product and release.
- If the installer offers a repair or reinstall action, follow its instructions.
- Otherwise, uninstall the affected product through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select AutoCAD, click the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the official Autodesk installer again.
- Launch AutoCAD and test it before restoring custom menus or profiles.
Do not install a different AutoCAD generation just to obtain a similarly named DLL. The replacement must come from the product that reports the error.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update, installation change, or detection event.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
acadbtn.dllor the AutoCAD installation folder. - Check the detected file path carefully.
- If it is clearly inside the genuine Autodesk installation, verify that the Autodesk installation is trusted and has not been modified.
- Restore the file only if you are confident the detection is a false positive.
- Launch AutoCAD and test it.
Do not turn off antivirus globally to force AutoCAD to start. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, update Autodesk through its official installer and update the security product’s detection definitions. If necessary, contact the security vendor or Autodesk support with the detection name and file path.
If quarantine contains no matching file, return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall step. That is safer than downloading a replacement.

Fix 5: Handle old toolbar and CUI migration problems
A toolbar problem is different from a launch-time missing-DLL problem. If AutoCAD starts normally but migrated toolbars display question marks or missing button images, the issue may involve old menu resources rather than a broken Windows installation.
Autodesk identifies acadbtn.dll in the older AutoCAD product’s Support directory for this type of toolbar migration. The target AutoCAD release may also use a different resource arrangement.
Proceed carefully:
- Close AutoCAD.
- Make a backup copy of your custom CUI, menu, and workspace files.
- Identify the older AutoCAD release from which the toolbar was migrated.
- Confirm that the old release’s
Supportdirectory contains the expected resource file. - Open the target release’s Options dialog.
- Go to the Files tab.
- Expand Support File Search Path.
- Check whether the required migration directory is included.
- Review the migrated CUI file and its associated resource files.
- Remove stale generated MNR files only if you understand which custom menu they belong to and have a backup.
- Restart AutoCAD and reload the intended CUI or workspace.
Do not use this migration procedure to repair an AutoCAD installation that cannot launch. For a launch error, repair or reinstall the target AutoCAD product first.
Fix 6: Repair the complete Autodesk installation after deletion or corruption
The error can follow a cleanup utility, manual deletion, failed update, incomplete backup restore, disk problem, or partially removed AutoCAD installation.

Check the Windows drive for broader symptoms:
- Other AutoCAD files are also missing.
- Autodesk updates repeatedly fail.
- File Explorer reports read errors.
- The installation folder contains unusually few files.
- The problem began after restoring a backup.
- AutoCAD previously worked but stopped after a disk or filesystem fault.
If several product files are missing, do not restore individual DLLs one at a time. Use the Autodesk installer to repair or reinstall the complete product.
If Windows reports disk errors, first back up important drawings and user data. Then use the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic tools or Windows storage troubleshooting as appropriate. A failing drive can damage a newly repaired installation again.
Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
acadbtn.dll is an Autodesk application file, so Windows System File Checker will not normally restore it. Use Windows integrity commands when other applications also show damaged-system-file errors, Windows components are malfunctioning, or the error specifically concerns a protected Windows file.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted Windows files. That does not guarantee that acadbtn.dll has been restored.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart Windows and run the commands again once. If the problem affects only AutoCAD, stop repeating Windows repairs and reinstall AutoCAD instead.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing detected issues; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application-owned file.
Fix 8: Check dependencies only when the error names one
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Look at the exact error and note whether it names a different file, such as:
MSVCP140.dllVCRUNTIME140.dllvcomp140.dll
If a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is named:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Find the entries matching the runtime named by the error.
- Open the three-dot menu for the relevant entry.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Repair.
- Repeat for the other architecture entry when Autodesk’s instructions call for both x86 and x64 packages.
- Restart Windows and test AutoCAD.
Do not repair Visual C++ merely because acadbtn.dll is missing. Use this step when the message or diagnostic evidence points to a Microsoft runtime dependency.
If the error names a Windows component, follow the repair guidance for that component. If it names another Autodesk DLL, repair the complete Autodesk product rather than downloading that DLL separately.
Fix 9: Test a new Windows profile
A damaged Windows user profile can prevent AutoCAD from launching correctly even when the installation is intact.

- Launch AutoCAD without importing your old profile or custom settings.
If AutoCAD works in the new account, the original profile or AutoCAD user configuration is likely involved. Back up custom settings, then use Autodesk’s profile-reset or settings-reset procedure for your product release. Do not copy random DLLs into the old profile.
If AutoCAD fails in both accounts, return to product repair or reinstall and examine the exact error path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Update drivers only for a separate graphics problem
Graphics drivers are not a normal remedy for acadbtn.dll. Update them only when you also have display corruption, crashes involving the graphics subsystem, viewport problems, or a diagnostic that identifies a graphics component.
To check the driver:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Visit the computer or graphics manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Install the driver intended for your Windows edition and hardware.
- Restart Windows and test AutoCAD.
When manually checking several hardware models and deciding which driver package is appropriate becomes the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs the installation. It is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair AutoCAD when acadbtn.dll is the application file that is missing.
Why regsvr32 acadbtn.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point, commonly through functions such as DllRegisterServer. A resource library or application DLL may not provide that function.
Recommended Free Tools
Running:
regsvr32 acadbtn.dll
can therefore produce an error such as “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” That result does not prove the file is missing or that Windows registration is the cause.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the application vendor specifically documents registration for that exact file. For acadbtn.dll, repair the Autodesk installation and restore the correct product path instead.
Why copying it to System32 is unsafe
Windows searches application locations and system locations according to its DLL search rules. Putting an Autodesk file into a system directory can:
- Leave AutoCAD using the wrong release.
- Create conflicts with another application.
- Hide the real installation problem.
- Cause DLL preloading or replacement risks.
- Make future repairs and updates harder to understand.
A 32-bit label does not change this advice. The file belongs beside the Autodesk product that loads it, not in a Windows folder selected by guesswork.

When reinstalling does not fix the error
Collect the following information before seeking further help:
- The exact AutoCAD or Autodesk product name.
- The product release or version shown in its installer or shortcut.
- Whether you use Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the dialog.
- The full path shown for
acadbtn.dll, if any. - Whether the file exists in the product’s
Supportdirectory. - Whether antivirus quarantine contains the file.
- Whether the issue began after an update, migration, cleanup, backup restore, or disk problem.
- Whether AutoCAD fails for every Windows account.
- Whether other applications show similar Bad Image or missing-DLL errors.
You can also check the application log:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time AutoCAD failed.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and exception information.
If the faulting module is not acadbtn.dll, troubleshoot the module actually named by Event Viewer.

FAQ
Is acadbtn.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an Autodesk AutoCAD application resource file. Windows should not normally provide or restore it through System32, SysWOW64, or SFC.
Which AutoCAD versions use acadbtn.dll?
The available Autodesk documentation specifically discusses the file in older AutoCAD installations and migrated custom toolbars. The exact complete list of releases is not established here. Do not assume that every AutoCAD version uses the same file.
Is acadbtn.dll a normal executable DLL?
It is best understood as a button and icon resource library associated with AutoCAD. It is not a general-purpose Windows runtime component.
Should I download it from a DLL website?
No. Random copies can contain malware, be the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a damaged Autodesk installation or missing dependency. Use the matching Autodesk installer, Autodesk Account, or Autodesk repair and reinstall workflow.
Should I put a 32-bit copy in SysWOW64?
No. Architecture does not determine the correct folder by itself. The Autodesk product’s installation path determines where its files belong.
Will regsvr32 acadbtn.dll fix it?
Normally no. Resource libraries and many application DLLs do not support self-registration. Use Autodesk repair or reinstall instead.
What if AutoCAD starts but toolbar icons are missing?
That may be a CUI or toolbar-resource migration issue rather than a missing launch file. Back up your custom menus, verify the relevant Support search path, and follow the documented Autodesk migration procedure for the older and newer releases involved.
What if the dialog names MSVCP140.dll or another runtime?
Repair the named Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable or Windows component only when the error identifies it. Do not infer that Visual C++ is responsible from acadbtn.dll alone.
Should I reinstall my graphics driver?
Not for this file by itself. Use Device Manager and the hardware manufacturer’s driver only when there is separate evidence of a graphics or display problem.
What is the safest final fix?
Repair the affected AutoCAD installation when that option exists. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the same Autodesk product and release from its official installer.
