Abstract Screenshot API Rate Limits and How to Handle 429 Errors

Abstract’s Screenshot API has both total request allowances and per-second limits. Learn how to investigate 429 responses and retry without making throttling worse.

A 429 from Abstract’s Website Screenshot API means your client should slow down; it does not, by itself, tell you whether you hit a per-second limit or another restriction. Check your plan’s request rate and total allowance, honor a Retry-After header if the response actually includes one, and otherwise retry with capped exponential backoff and jitter. Abstract’s general guidance recommends that approach, but does not establish a specific 429 header contract for the Screenshot API.

What Abstract’s Screenshot API limits mean

Abstract publishes two distinct kinds of limits: a total request allowance over a subscription term and a requests-per-second (RPS) threshold. A client can exceed the RPS threshold even when it has plenty of total plan usage left. The product page currently lists these values:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Plan Total request allowance shown Requests per second shown
Free 100 requests 1 request per second
Standard 60,000 requests per year in the annual billing view; 60,000 requests per month in the monthly billing view 3 requests per second

These are the limits currently displayed on Abstract’s Website Screenshot API product page. Verify the billing view and plan on your account before relying on a total allowance; the Standard total differs between the annual and monthly views. The product page does not establish limits for every tier in the material cited here.

Abstract’s terms address RPS threshold exceedances separately from subscription-term request limits. They say repeated RPS exceedances may trigger an automatic upgrade for eligible plans; for the highest available or custom plans, continued excess may result in rate limiting or other remedial action under the applicable terms. That is distinct from simply using up a monthly or annual quota.

Why a 429 happens—and what is not confirmed

HTTP 429 means too many requests in a period. Abstract’s general 429 guide, last updated June 9, 2026, advises checking for Retry-After and waiting for the indicated time when it is present. Its general rate-limit guide also advises against immediate retries and recommends exponential backoff with jitter. Those are general HTTP/API recommendations, not confirmation that the Screenshot API returns Retry-After or any particular X-RateLimit headers.

The reviewed Screenshot API material does not provide a product-specific 429 response example, guarantee a reset interval, or explain whether a particular 429 means a burst limit or another account restriction. Do not infer an undocumented response-body field or precise retry delay. Inspect the response from your account and consult the current endpoint documentation if you need to establish which limit applies.

How to handle a 429 safely

  1. Stop immediate retries. A tight retry loop adds load and can extend the throttling problem.
  2. Check the actual response headers. If Retry-After is present, wait the specified duration before retrying. Do not assume the header exists when it is absent.
  3. If it is absent, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter. Increase the delay between attempts, add a random component so concurrent clients do not retry in lockstep, and set both a maximum delay and a finite retry count. After the limit, surface the error or put the work in a queue for later.
  4. Reduce request pressure. Lower concurrency and pace requests to stay within the RPS threshold shown for your plan; avoid launching duplicate work while the same screenshot request is pending.
  5. Reuse results where possible. Cache screenshots when the URL and capture settings make reuse appropriate instead of requesting the same result repeatedly.
  6. Log what actually happened. Record status, elapsed time, relevant response headers and retry attempt. This helps distinguish a short burst from an account allowance or plan issue without assuming Abstract’s undocumented endpoint behavior.

Batch retries are not a general 429 guarantee

Abstract’s API changelog records enhanced error handling for batch-processing requests, including detailed error reporting, standardized error codes and automatic retries for failed tasks on April 9, 2024. That entry concerns batch-processing failed tasks; it does not say ordinary single screenshot requests that receive 429 are automatically retried. The changelog separately records expanded support for password-protected website captures on May 20, 2024.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • 429 continues after retries: Check the plan’s RPS threshold and reduce concurrency or add pacing. Do not keep replaying at the same rate.
  • No Retry-After header: Do not invent a wait interval. Apply capped exponential backoff with jitter and inspect the headers your request actually received.
  • Total usage appears available, but requests are throttled: Remember that total plan usage and RPS limits are separate constraints.
  • Unsure whether the quota or rate threshold applies: Capture the status, timing and returned headers, then verify the selected plan and billing view in Abstract’s product/account information. The published evidence does not map a 429 to one specific cause.
  • Batch jobs retry but single calls fail: The documented automatic-retry note is specific to batch-processing failed tasks; implement a finite retry policy for other requests unless your current endpoint documentation says otherwise.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot API alternative, ScreenshotNeo is worth trying first: it removes cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. One GET request returns an image or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Abstract Screenshot API 429 include a Retry-After header?

No such guarantee is established in Abstract’s general 429 guidance for this specific API. Check the headers on the response you receive.

Does Abstract automatically retry single screenshot requests that return 429?

The documented automatic-retry note is about failed batch-processing tasks, not ordinary single screenshot requests.
