If Abstract’s Screenshot API returns HTTP 401, first confirm that your request uses the documented endpoint and includes the api_key query parameter. Then inspect the outgoing request and response to check whether the key is present, correct, and current. A 403 is different: it can indicate an access or permission restriction, not simply a bad key.
Check the endpoint and API key parameter
Abstract’s Screenshot API product page shows this endpoint and query-parameter format: https://screenshot.abstractapi.com/v1/. The parameter name is api_key; do not replace it with a different authentication method unless Abstract documents that method for this API.
For example, the request should follow this pattern, with your real key and target URL substituted:
https://screenshot.abstractapi.com/v1/?api_key=YOUR_API_KEY&url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com
#1 Best Overall
Keep the key private. Avoid pasting it into public bug reports, screenshots, or shared logs.
Inspect the request and response
Before changing credentials, verify what your client actually sends and what the API returns. Abstract recommends checking request and response details when diagnosing a 401. In a browser, use developer tools; in a script or server, inspect the equivalent HTTP trace or safe logging. Redact the API key before sharing diagnostic output.
- Confirm the request reaches
https://screenshot.abstractapi.com/v1/. - Check that the query parameter is spelled
api_keyand has a value. - Read the HTTP status and response body; do not infer the cause from an error label alone.
- Check whether URL encoding or client-side parameter construction altered the request.
Use the status code to choose the next check
| Status | What it suggests | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | Authentication is missing or has failed. | Verify that the key is included, correct, current, and formatted as expected. Abstract’s payload guide also shows a missing required API key resulting in an unauthorized error payload. |
| 403 Forbidden | The request may be understood, but access is refused. | Investigate permissions or access restrictions as well as the credential. Abstract’s general guide gives insufficient permissions, IP or geographic restrictions, and missing or out-of-scope keys as possible examples; it does not establish that any one applies to your account. |
Abstract’s HTTP 401 guide, last updated June 9, 2026, describes 401 as a failure to provide or satisfy required authentication. Its separate 403 guide distinguishes a refusal of access from an authentication failure. Use the response status and body to direct troubleshooting rather than treating every error as an invalid key.
If the key still appears valid
The official pages cited here do not establish an Abstract Screenshot API key recovery, regeneration, or account-status workflow. Check Abstract’s official account help or contact Abstract support to confirm the key’s status and the correct recovery step. Do not rely on guessed dashboard paths or assume that generating a replacement key is the documented fix.
