How to Monitor Website Screenshots When a Page Has a Geolocation Prompt

First decide which state your monitor should capture: the browser’s geolocation prompt, a page after location access is allowed or denied, or content personalized for a specific location. These states are not interchangeable. With Playwright, you can set fixed coordinates and grant geolocation permission to test location-specific content, then capture a viewport, element, or full page. That permission setup does not reproduce the browser’s human-facing prompt.

Choose the state your screenshot should represent

A useful visual monitor starts with a precise expected state. Choose one of these and keep it consistent between runs:

  • Prompt visible: Detect whether the browser displays a geolocation permission prompt. This is browser- and version-dependent; verify it in the exact browser environment used by the monitor.
  • Access allowed: Grant geolocation permission and set coordinates, then check the location-specific page state.
  • Access denied: Test the site’s response when location access is refused. Do not treat this as equivalent to a prompt being visible.
  • Location-specific content: Set stable coordinates and verify the content returned for that location. This may be the main purpose of monitoring even if the prompt itself is not relevant.

Playwright’s documented geolocation workflow is to “Grant "geolocation" permissions and set geolocation to a specific area.” See the Playwright Emulation documentation. That describes an allowed-location scenario, not a way to force a human-facing browser prompt to appear.

Set up repeatable location-specific monitoring with Playwright

For a location-content check, fix the coordinates, grant permission in the browser context, and preserve the same browser configuration for each run. The following Node.js example uses Playwright Test, opens a page with permission already granted, and saves a viewport screenshot. Replace the URL and coordinates with values appropriate for your test.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('location-specific page screenshot', async ({ browser }) => {
  const context = await browser.newContext({
    geolocation: { latitude: 37.7749, longitude: -122.4194 },
    permissions: ['geolocation'],
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
  });

  const page = await context.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'location-page.png' });
  await context.close();
});

Use coordinates that the site can meaningfully distinguish, and keep them unchanged when comparing runs. Playwright also documents changing geolocation for pages in the same browser context; this is useful when checking more than one location without creating a separate context for each. See Playwright’s geolocation and emulation guidance.

Capture only the relevant scope

  • Viewport: Use a standard page screenshot when the prompt or important content is visible in the current viewport. The example above saves this type.
  • One element: Capture a component when only a map, location message, or other specific region matters: await page.locator('[data-testid="location-result"]').screenshot({ path: 'location-result.png' });. Replace the selector with one that exists on the page.
  • Full page: Capture below-the-fold content with await page.screenshot({ path: 'location-full.png', fullPage: true });. A full-page image is not a substitute for checking a prompt that appears only in the visible browser window.

Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-page screenshots in its Screenshots guide and Page screenshot API reference.

Monitor a prompt-visible state separately

Do not infer prompt visibility from a test that has already granted permission. The documented context setup makes geolocation available to the page; the prompt itself is a browser UI state whose appearance depends on the browser and version. If the prompt is what you need to monitor, run and validate that check in the exact browser environment used in production monitoring, and confirm that the capture mechanism can include the relevant browser UI. A page screenshot may capture webpage content rather than browser chrome.

Historical prompt illustrations are not reliable templates for current behavior: one comparison source depicts Chrome 114, Firefox 114, Safari 16.5.1, and Edge 114, not current interface guarantees. See the browser prompt comparison for that historical context.

Wait for a stable image before comparing

Location-based pages can change after initial navigation as scripts fetch results or update components. Wait for a meaningful page condition before capture where possible, such as a result selector appearing, rather than relying only on elapsed time. For screenshot regression checks, Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing the final capture with the expectation. These assertions are documented for the Playwright test runner; see Visual comparisons.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('location-page.png');

Use an assertion baseline only after confirming that the browser, coordinates, permission state, viewport, and capture scope match the intended test. If the target page has animation or inherently changing content, account for that at the application or test level rather than treating every pixel difference as a site regression.

Record the conditions alongside each baseline

A changed image can indicate a real website change—or simply a changed test condition. Store the following with the baseline or monitoring run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Browser and version, plus the environment that launches it.
  • Latitude and longitude, if the test is location-specific.
  • Permission state: prompt-visible, allowed, or denied.
  • Viewport dimensions and whether the capture is viewport, element, or full-page.
  • The page URL and any relevant point in the navigation or interaction flow.

Troubleshooting geolocation screenshot checks

The prompt does not appear

Check whether the test context has already granted geolocation permission; an allowed-permission setup is not a prompt-visible test. Then verify prompt behavior in the target browser and version. Do not assume the page screenshot includes browser chrome or that every browser presents the same prompt.

The page shows the wrong location

Confirm that the context has the intended latitude and longitude and that permission is granted for the allowed-location case. Keep both values fixed between baseline and later runs. If multiple pages share a context, check whether geolocation was changed later in that context.

The screenshot differs between runs

Compare the recorded browser version, coordinates, permission state, viewport, and screenshot scope first. Then wait for the page’s relevant content to settle and use Playwright’s screenshot assertion for visual comparison.

The screenshot misses relevant content

Use an element screenshot for a specific result component or a full-page screenshot when content below the fold matters. If the subject is a browser permission prompt, validate whether your capture setup can capture that browser UI rather than only the webpage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Playwright take a screenshot of a geolocation permission prompt?

The documented Playwright geolocation setup grants permission and sets coordinates; it does not establish that a browser prompt will be displayed or included in a page screenshot. Validate prompt-visible capture in your target browser environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a full-page screenshot for a geolocation prompt?

Usually not if the subject is the prompt itself: a full-page screenshot concerns webpage content, while the prompt may be browser UI. Use full-page capture when the location-specific page content below the fold is what you need to inspect.
