It covers the path from medium-voltage power sources to rack-level distribution and cooling, with options for DC-native and hybrid AC/DC facilities. ABB expects the first facilities using the complete DC-native portfolio to be installed and operational within two to three years of its September 21, 2026 announcement—not immediately.
What ABB announced
Infinitus is an integrated power architecture, not a single device or a consumer power product. ABB’s goal is to address the growing electrical demands of AI data centers by coordinating power conversion, distribution, protection and cooling-related equipment.

The portfolio is intended for new DC-native facilities as well as hybrid AC/DC designs that retain parts of an existing AC system. ABB says the appropriate route depends on a facility’s current infrastructure and future requirements. In a statement accompanying its September 21 announcement, ABB Electrification president Giampiero Frisio described the need for options that can serve existing AC sites while allowing operators to move toward hybrid or DC-native designs.

ABB groups the portfolio into five functional areas. Together, they span power entering a facility, conversion and distribution within it, and the use of electricity by cooling equipment.

Why ABB is emphasizing 800 VDC
ABB says its Infinitus solid-state transformer can convert medium-voltage AC directly to 800 VDC using high-frequency solid-state power conversion. The company’s stated rationale is that, for a given power level, a higher distribution voltage can carry the power at lower current. ABB says this could reduce conductor requirements, distribution losses, conversion stages and infrastructure footprint.
Those are ABB’s design rationale and expected benefits, not independently verified results from a named operating data center. Actual outcomes would depend on the facility’s layout, load profile, equipment and comparison with its alternative design. ABB’s materials describe the portfolio as suitable for different power demands, facility layouts and energy mixes; they do not provide a project-level performance comparison or full technical specifications.

Other technologies ABB presented with the portfolio
An ABB product brief dated October 1, 2026, names several systems and technologies alongside Infinitus. They illustrate the broader infrastructure context; they are not consumer products or evidence that every item is already available as part of a complete installation.
- MNS 4.0 switchgear and control gear: ABB says the platform builds on a system deployed in nearly 2 million panels globally. The company states MNS 4.0 will be available to customers in 2027.
- SMISSLINE TP HP: ABB describes this as an 800-ampere-ampacity plug-in distribution system with a touch-safe design and potential for transition between AC and DC.
- FIDO robotic inspection technology: FIDO captures thermal, acoustic and visual data to help inspection teams assess hard-to-reach or hazardous areas.
- Synchronous condenser package: ABB says it is designed to stabilize the grid interface and support dynamic reactive power.
- Modus LTO battery: A lithium-titanate-oxide storage solution intended to manage rapid data-center demand peaks.
How to think about AC, hybrid and DC-native designs
ABB is not presenting DC-native as the only viable choice. A facility with established AC infrastructure may prioritize adding capacity without rebuilding its power architecture; another project may be designed around DC distribution from the outset. A hybrid approach can combine existing AC equipment with selected DC systems. The trade-offs are site-specific, and ABB’s announcement does not provide a like-for-like independent comparison against competing vendors.

- 1U 8-OUTLET RACK MOUNT PDU: Built-in 8ft. (2.4m) NEMA 5-15P Power Cord; 8x NEMA 5-15R Outlets; 125V Max. Input/Output; 15A Circuit Breaker; Ideal power supply for server rooms, server closets, small data centers and recording studios
- ON/OFF OUTLET SWITCHES: Each outlet features an individual illuminated rocker switch for controlled power management; Enumerated switch labels clearly identify the corresponding outlet; Safety covers prevent accidental power cycling
- 15 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER: This 8-port rackmount power distribution unit features a self-tripping and resettable circuit breaker with 15A trip-point to protect connected equipment
- 1U RACK DESIGN: This horizontal power distribution unit installs in 1U of rack space on network racks and is compatible with all 19-inch server racks 4" or deeper; Compatible with ANSI/EIA RS-310-D standards
- OPTIMIZED DESIGN: Heavy-duty steel housing with rear facing outlets; Attached 8 ft. (2.4m) long power cord
- Existing AC infrastructure and retrofit constraints: The equipment already installed, the available space and the practical scope of a retrofit affect where conversion and distribution changes can be made.
- Conversion location and stages: A design must determine where AC is converted to DC and how many conversion stages are required between the incoming supply and IT loads.
- Distribution capacity and protection: The system must carry the facility’s expected loads and provide suitable protection for DC overcurrents.
- Cooling and energy management: Cooling equipment and demand peaks are part of the power-system design, not separate concerns from supplying IT racks.
- Facility layout and energy mix: Grid supply, on-site generation, equipment placement and the building’s design affect which architecture fits.
- Project timing: A product’s announced availability is not the same as a completed, commissioned DC-native facility using the full portfolio.
ABB’s projections and estimates, in context
The numbers below are company statements, projections or analysis reported by ABB—not guaranteed outcomes for an individual facility.
| Figure | What it refers to | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than double by 2030 | Expected growth in global data-center electricity demand | International Energy Agency projection, as cited by ABB in its September 21, 2026 release. |
| About 25–40% | Share of new data-center capacity installed in 2030 that could use DC distribution | ABB estimate for 2030, reported in 2026. |
| 1 MW per rack and beyond | Expected power demand of next-generation AI chips, compared with almost 200 kW today | ABB statement in its September 21, 2026 release. This is a projection, not a universal measured rack specification. |
| More than 5% | Potential energy-efficiency gain from DC distribution | ABB/BCG analysis, as reported by ABB in 2026; realization depends on the facility and comparison assumptions. |
| 25 MW of additional IT load; more than US$300 million in potential additional annual revenue | Illustrative implications of a 5% efficiency-gain scenario at a 500 MW facility | ABB/BCG scenario calculation reported by ABB in 2026, not a revenue guarantee. |
When the products and complete systems are expected
ABB’s September 21, 2026 launch release says the first DC-native facilities using the complete portfolio are expected to be installed and operational within two to three years of the announcement—roughly 2028–29. That is a forward-looking expectation, not confirmation of a live deployment date. Separately, ABB’s October 1 product brief says MNS 4.0 will be available to customers in 2027; that timing does not mean the full Infinitus architecture will be available or operational on the same date.

- 2-flat-pin plug
- 110V input voltage / 9VDC 1A output voltage
- For use with Arduino Uno, Mega and MB102 Power supply boards
- Connector size: 5.5 x 2.1mm with Center Tip positive, sleeve is negative
- These adapters do not work for guitar pedals or label makers which require negative tip power adapters
ABB says it has more than 25 years of experience with DC technology and more than 700 DC patents. These are company-reported figures. The company also says it is working with chipmakers, hyperscale customers, supply partners and industry bodies on DC architecture standards.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Infinitus gives data-center developers a defined set of DC power-system functions to consider as rack and facility demands rise. ABB’s central proposition is an integrated path from medium-voltage supply to distribution and cooling, with the option to preserve AC infrastructure where that better suits the site.

The announcement does not establish prices, complete technical specifications, independently measured site savings, or a guaranteed commercial return. ABB’s efficiency, capacity and market figures should therefore be read as estimates or scenarios. The practical case for a particular facility depends on its design, energy supply, load growth, conversion choices and implementation schedule.
