Soils sampled at South Terras, a historic uranium mine in Cornwall, contained uranium associated with arsenic-bearing minerals, including meta-zeunerite. The finding may help researchers understand how uranium is retained or released in soil, but it is not evidence that adding arsenic would clean up other contaminated sites—or that South Terras has been remediated.
What researchers found at South Terras
A 2017 peer-reviewed study in npj Materials Degradation examined soils from South Terras in Cornwall’s St Austell district. The mine operated from 1873 to 1930; the paper reports that it produced 736 tonnes of uranium over that period. That production figure is the study’s account of the mine’s history.

The team sampled two areas linked to past mining activity:
- Ochre Works: an area where iron ore was smelted.
- Dressing Floor: an area where uranium ore and mine spoil were processed.
Analyses of the sampled soils found uranium at less than 1,690 parts per million (ppm), arsenic at 1,830 ppm and beryllium at about 250 ppm. These are measurements from the studied samples and locations, not averages for the entire mine or estimates of present-day human exposure.

How arsenic was associated with uranium
The researchers combined broad soil analyses with detailed mineralogical methods, including micro-focus X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and diffraction. These techniques helped identify mineral phases and examine the forms in which uranium occurred.
They reported uranium associated with arsenic-bearing mineral phases, including meta-zeunerite, an insoluble uranium-arsenic mineral. Chemistry World’s 2018 account described the finding as the first reported instance of arsenic controlling uranium contamination at a site of this kind. That “first” characterization belongs to the 2018 report; the 2017 paper is the primary source for the study’s methods and results.

What the finding could mean for cleanup research
Uranium’s chemical form can affect how readily it moves through soil. The South Terras observations offer a natural example of local chemistry affecting uranium’s form and potential mobility. Understanding such processes may help researchers develop soil-remediation strategies, but this study investigated soil chemistry; it did not test a cleanup product, engineer a treatment or measure the success of a remediation intervention.

That distinction matters: finding arsenic in a uranium-bearing mineral at one site does not establish that adding arsenic elsewhere would be safe, effective or appropriate. The result is specific to the sampled South Terras soils and their conditions. It should not be treated as a general instruction to use arsenic against uranium contamination.

- 8-way Heavy Metals Water Test Kit: With our 8 parameters Heavy metals water test strips, you will know levels of Iron, Mercury, Copper, Lead, Chromium, Magnesium, Cadmium and Calcium easily
Does this mean the mine has been cleaned up?
No. The reported work characterizes samples and helps explain how uranium may occur and behave in those soils. It does not establish that the site has been cleaned up, provide a current site-wide exposure assessment or confirm present-day treatment status. The study’s historical samples are not a current risk survey.

Other Cornwall projects illustrate different problems and methods; they are not evidence that the South Terras soil finding has been put into practice.

- DO-IT-YOURSELF screening of any freshwater supply for Arsenic (tap water, well water, ponds, lakes, streams etc.). Arsenic occurs naturally in the earth's crust, is found in more than 50% of U.S. water supplies and can cause organ-cancer in humans and animals.
- PATENT PENDING DIY TECHNOLOGIES indicate Arsenic concentration ranges of 0 - 500 PPB.
- CERTIFIED “ACCURATE” by EPA-certified scientists with over 150 years of combined experience in testing drinking water. 10 PPB is the USEPA’s Maximum Contamination Level for Arsenic in drinking water. However, no amount of Arsenic is safe to consume.
- FAST RESULTS: At-home screening delivers your test results in just 30 minutes. Unlike most other DIY kits, this kit tests without messy test strips. Includes detailed instructions. One test per kit. NOTE: Testing for Arsenic at a lab can cost hundreds of dollars, making this kit a cost-effective at-home option to screen for Arsenic.

| Place and example | Medium and contaminants | Approach and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| South Terras | Uranium-bearing soil; the study also reported arsenic and beryllium in sampled soils. | Natural mineral associations observed in a site-specific soil study; not an engineered cleanup trial. |
| Wheal Jane | Mine water containing metals including arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury and zinc. | A government case study describes pumping and treatment. It reports an average annual water volume of 5.6 million cubic metres treated and 429,306 kg of iron removed; those figures apply to Wheal Jane, not South Terras. |
| Coombe | Mine water. | A government page describes a passive treatment pilot using a Vertical Flow Reactor. It is a separate project, not validation of the South Terras soil finding. |
A separate University of Manchester research record addresses uranium and radium behaviour in sediments near South Terras. Its abstract provides additional research context, but does not establish current site-wide risk or quantify uranium’s contribution to waterways.
