Aave V3 Security Review: Reentrancy Risks and Access Control

Aave V3 has published audit and formal-verification records and a documented ACL model, but assessing reentrancy or access control requires pinning the exact deployment, code revision and block.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available public materials describe Aave V3’s access-control design and document a history of security reviews, but they do not establish whether a particular deployment is vulnerable to reentrancy—or prove that it is not. A meaningful conclusion requires the target network, market, deployed contracts, source revision and review block to be pinned first.

What this review can—and cannot—conclude

Aave publishes V3 audit and formal-verification materials, and its documentation describes role-based controls for privileged actions. Those facts show that security work and access controls exist; they are not a guarantee about every version or deployment. The title does not specify a network, market, contract addresses or source commit, so there is no single deployment whose reentrancy behavior can be confirmed here.

The historical aave-v3-core repository is archived and directs readers to V3 Origin for the latest V3 code. Its source and audit history are useful evidence about the revisions they cover, not automatic evidence about current deployments. Any code-level finding must be matched to the exact deployed bytecode and the reports that assessed the corresponding source.

What Aave’s published security record establishes

Aave’s security page lists V3 security reports from ABDK, Sigma Prime, PeckShield, Trail of Bits and OpenZeppelin, as well as formal verification by Certora. The listed dates below are the dates associated with those entries; they should not be read as proof that the same code was assessed across all networks or later revisions.

The archived repository organizes early work into V3 Round 1 (October 2021), V3 Round 2 (December 2021) and V3.0.1 (December 2022), and lists formal verification from November 2021 through January 2022. These dated records help identify historical review activity, but a reader must still check each report’s scope, source revision, findings and remediation against the target deployment.

A separate Aave governance reports repository contains security-reviewed and verified proposal reports. Its README says Certora became the DAO service provider for that engagement on April 29, 2024. A proposal-specific review is not interchangeable with a full protocol audit: it addresses the proposal and scope described in that report.

How Aave V3’s access control is structured

Aave’s ACL Manager documentation describes an access-control list intended to segregate powers. In the archived implementation, the ACL Manager defines POOL_ADMIN, EMERGENCY_ADMIN, RISK_ADMIN, FLASH_BORROWER, BRIDGE and ASSET_LISTING_ADMIN. The role names identify the documented role set; the actual effects of a role should be established by tracing the target revision’s guarded functions rather than inferred from its name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Role administration is part of the security boundary

The archived ACL Manager constructor reads the ACL admin from the addresses provider and assigns it DEFAULT_ADMIN_ROLE. The inherited AccessControl design gives each role an admin role that controls membership grants and revocations. In that legacy implementation, DEFAULT_ADMIN_ROLE is its own admin, so a holder can grant or revoke that role. This makes protection of the default administrator and the full authority chain central audit concerns—not merely the final privileged function.

Aave’s ACL Manager documentation identifies ACL_ADMIN as the holder of DEFAULT_ADMIN_ROLE and states that all instances of POOL_ADMIN across V3 networks are governed by the Guardians multisig or Governance Bridge executors. This is documentation-level governance context. For a particular pool, verify actual role holders and ownership or control chains on the target network at a pinned block; do not treat a general documentation statement as proof of current on-chain state.

What the documented guarded operations show

Aave’s Pool Configurator reference says that the PoolConfigurator implements protocol configuration methods and groups write methods by ACL-managed permission. It explicitly documents initReserves as restricted to asset-listing or pool administrators. In the archived Pool implementation, pool-admin checks go through the configured ACL Manager, bridge-only checks test membership in the bridge role, and configurator-only operations compare the caller with the PoolConfigurator address in the addresses provider.

These checks illustrate why an access-control review should follow both sides of a permission: the function’s modifier or check, and the configuration or governance path that determines who can satisfy it. The Aave Permissions Book can help locate pool- and network-specific permissions, holders and upgradeability information, but its indexed data should be checked against the target block and verified contract bytecode.

How to assess reentrancy in a specific deployment

An external call alone does not demonstrate a reentrancy bug. Nor does the absence of an issue in a listed audit prove that no issue exists in a different revision. The analysis needs to establish whether an attacker-controlled callback can re-enter a reachable function while shared state is temporarily inconsistent, and whether that path breaks a protocol invariant.

  1. Pin the target. Record the network, market, relevant contract addresses, source commit or verified source, implementation behind any proxy, and the block height used to inspect configuration and role holders.
  2. Match the evidence. Identify which audit or formal-verification report covers that code revision and deployment path. Read its scope, exclusions, findings and remediation status; keep proposal reviews distinct from protocol-wide assessments.
  3. Trace each relevant entry point. Map state reads and writes, token transfers, receiver or oracle calls, callbacks, and any other external interactions. Identify functions that could be re-entered during those interactions, including cross-function paths that touch the same state.
  4. Test invariants and controls. Determine whether a callback can observe or exploit an intermediate state, and whether guards, phase checks or other restrictions actually block the path. Exercise reachable callback and cross-function cases against the pinned implementation rather than relying on a modifier’s name.
  5. Report the result narrowly. Tie a demonstrated path—or the tested limits of an assessment—to the affected revision and deployment. Do not generalize a finding or a clean result to other markets or versions without evidence.

What to verify before relying on an access-control conclusion

  • For every external state-changing method, identify the actual access check and its source of truth: ACL Manager role membership, an addresses-provider value, or another authority.
  • Trace who can grant, revoke or renounce each relevant role, who controls its admin role, and how proxy ownership or governance handoffs affect that chain.
  • Compare configured addresses and role holders with the intended governance arrangement at the review’s pinned block.
  • Check that the implementation being assessed is the one deployed and that the source and bytecode correspond; historical repository code alone is insufficient.
