The app, which he called StereoTray, made changing modes quicker; it did not stop the reset. His account is a useful example of how a narrowly scoped AI coding project can ease a recurring irritation without repairing its cause.
What was the Windows annoyance?
Lewis says his sound card’s speaker configuration returned to 5.1 after his PC rebooted. He preferred stereo for headphones, so he repeatedly had to open the legacy Sound settings, select the card, open speaker configuration, and choose stereo. He estimated that each manual change took 10–15 seconds. That is his recollection of his own setup, not a general or independently measured figure.

He says Windows and driver updates had not resolved the behavior on his system. The account does not identify the exact sound-card model or Windows version, so it does not establish that other PCs experience the same reset.

Why make a toggle instead of forcing stereo?
A scheduled task that automatically selected stereo would have removed the manual step, but it would not fit a setup that sometimes used 5.1 speakers. Lewis wanted to choose the mode when needed rather than have the PC impose one setting at every reboot.

How did he guide Claude toward a smaller app?
Lewis says his first instructions were too broad, and Claude produced something close to a full recreation of the Sound menu. He then added details about his operating system and hardware and described the controls he actually wanted. The distinction matters: the task was not to rebuild Windows audio settings, but to make one frequently used change easier.
- Describe the task: Identify the repeated setting change the utility should perform.
- Specify the environment: Include the relevant operating system and hardware details when they may affect how the setting is accessed.
- Define the interaction: State what the user should do to switch modes and which secondary options are needed.
- Keep the scope bounded: Ask for the smallest utility that solves the particular friction, rather than a replacement for an entire settings interface.
In Lewis’s account, Claude worked for nearly 40 minutes before producing StereoTray. That is his description of the time Claude spent working, not a claim that the full project—including preparation and iteration—took that long.

What did StereoTray do, according to Lewis?
Lewis describes a system-tray icon that changes appearance to indicate the selected mode. He says a left-click switches between stereo and 5.1, while a right-click opens a menu with links to sound settings and playback-device options. These details are the author’s report; the article does not establish that the program is available for download or independently verify its behavior.
What did the app solve—and what did it leave alone?
StereoTray made the repeated switch easier, but the underlying configuration still reset after reboots. Lewis describes the change as making the problem tolerable, not solving it. He estimates that the recurring manual changes had cost him several hours over the years; that is a personal rough estimate, not a calculated or population-level statistic.

This is the useful distinction for anyone considering a small AI-built tool: it can remove steps from a workaround even when the operating-system or driver behavior remains unchanged. In this case, convenience came from turning a trip through several settings screens into an on-demand toggle.

Lewis’s story shows one person using Claude to create a utility for a narrow Windows annoyance. It does not show that StereoTray works across sound cards or Windows versions, that it is publicly available, or that AI-generated utilities are a substitute for diagnosing a persistent driver or system problem. Lewis also cautions against relying on AI-generated software for work- or health-critical needs; that is his judgment, not a formal safety standard.

For a low-stakes inconvenience, the practical lesson is to state the desired behavior, relevant environment, and limits clearly, then assess the result against the actual task. Lewis’s broader point is that a small fix can feel worthwhile even when it addresses only a minor annoyance.
