Yes—a ring made from metal atoms can display aromatic behaviour. In a study published in Nature Chemistry, researchers reported a triangular ring of three bismuth atoms, cyclo-Bi₃³⁻, held between uranium or thorium centers. Its reported ring currents are notable because they are associated primarily with σ electrons, rather than the familiar π-electron picture of benzene.
What the researchers found
The study, titled “All-metal aromaticity of cyclo-Bi₃³⁻ in diuranium and dithorium inverse-sandwich-type complexes,” describes two related complexes: one with uranium centers and one with thorium centers. In each, three bismuth atoms form a triangular unit supported between the actinide centers in an arrangement called an inverse-sandwich complex. The University of Manchester summarizes the work in its research release.

X-ray crystallography established the triangular arrangement. The team also used magnetic measurements, spectroscopy and computational modelling to assess the complexes’ electronic behaviour. The claim of aromaticity draws on this combination of structural and electronic evidence; it is not simply a conclusion from seeing a three-sided ring.

Aromaticity is a way chemists describe certain unusually stable, cyclic electron systems and the associated patterns of electron delocalization. Benzene is the standard teaching example: six carbon atoms form a ring, and its familiar aromatic picture emphasizes a circulating π-electron system above and below the ring’s plane.

In the bismuth complexes, the University of Manchester describes the observed ring-current behaviour as σ-aromaticity. The distinction is the kind of bonding electrons emphasized: the reported current is dominated by σ electrons, the electrons involved in bonds along the ring framework, rather than by the familiar π system of benzene. Chemical & Engineering News reports that calculations found electrons circulating around the ring, with the same σ electrons that form Bi–Bi bonds contributing to that current: C&EN’s account.
How it compares with benzene
| Feature | Bismuth system | Benzene |
|---|---|---|
| Ring atoms | Three bismuth atoms | Six carbon atoms |
| Supporting structure | Uranium or thorium centers in an inverse-sandwich complex | No actinide-center framework is part of the standard benzene structure |
| Electron contribution emphasized in the reported account | σ electrons associated with Bi–Bi bonds | The familiar aromatic model emphasizes π electrons |
C&EN reports a calculated ring current comparable to, and in some cases greater than, benzene’s. That is a comparison reported from calculations, not a general experimental measurement that makes the two systems interchangeable. The complexes differ in composition and structure, and the comparison does not settle every question about how aromaticity should be defined.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The University of Manchester account also identifies exalted diamagnetism in the dithorium complex as an observable associated with the ring-current behaviour. Magnetic and spectroscopic findings, the crystallographic structure and computational analysis contribute different kinds of evidence; not every inference about electron circulation is a direct measurement.
The result establishes a specific example of reported all-metal aromaticity in carefully stabilized bismuth complexes. It does not show that aromaticity belongs only to this structure or that heavy-element rings generally behave this way. The work is fundamental inorganic and actinide chemistry; the accounts do not establish a consumer application or product.

- Bismuth is a chemical element with the symbol Bi and atomic number 83.
- The iridescent rainbow of colors is caused by light scattering off thin layers of bismuth oxide formed when the surface of the hot bismuth reacts with the air.
- Crystal bismuth will be oxidized during the production process, resulting in a variety color of the oxide film, it is very bright!
- Metal bismuth is a magnificent crystal which grows up in artificial environment. Each piece of bismuth crystal is unique and different from all other ones, so it's very meaningful to consider it as a gift to your relatives, friends, teacher and classmates.
- Bismuth chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Bismuth is the most naturally diamagnetic element, and has one of the lowest values of thermal conductivity among metals.
