CONTROL Resonant and Marvel’s Wolverine are two very different answers to what a major action game can be. Remedy’s sequel is built around large, distinct zones, optional exploration and player choice; Sony and Insomniac present Wolverine as a focused, single-player story about Logan, powered by melee combat, stealth and heightened senses. The contrast supports an argument about competing creative bets—not proof that either game defines the whole industry.
What is the difference between CONTROL Resonant and Marvel’s Wolverine?
The clearest difference is the kind of experience each studio foregrounds. Remedy describes CONTROL Resonant as a more open and dynamic evolution of Control, combining action, exploration and player choice while preserving mystery, atmosphere and tension. Sony describes Marvel’s Wolverine as a single-player action adventure in which Logan searches for answers about his past.

That gives the title’s contrast a useful, but limited, meaning: Resonant emphasizes room to explore and make choices, while Wolverine puts a recognizable character and his story at the center. Those are documented design directions. They do not establish which game is better, or demonstrate a wider industry trend.

Is CONTROL Resonant open world?
Remedy describes large, distinct zones, not a single seamless open world. Its February 2026 gameplay details point to optional activities, hidden encounters and discoveries within those zones. The world also includes gravity anomalies that alter gravity and orientation, making navigation itself part of the supernatural setting.
That structure suggests more room to roam than a strictly linear sequence of levels, but “open-world” is not an established genre label in the cited description. The more precise takeaway is that Resonant is organized around expansive zones and optional exploration.

What makes CONTROL Resonant different from the first Control?
Remedy’s stated goal is to expand the series into a more open, dynamic experience that brings action, exploration and player choice together. The studio says it intends to keep the mystery, atmosphere and tension associated with its storytelling. In the sequel, Dylan Faden takes center stage as a supernatural crisis unfolds in Manhattan; Remedy’s launch announcement says Jesse Faden is missing and identifies a new resonance, alongside the Hiss and Mold, as part of that crisis.
On PS5, Remedy also describes an in-game space called the Gap where players can upgrade abilities and test builds. That points to progression choices as part of the sequel’s structure, though it does not by itself establish how consequential those choices are across the full game.

What kind of game is Marvel’s Wolverine?
Sony classifies Wolverine as a single-player action adventure and frames its story around Logan’s search for answers about his past. Insomniac’s description combines fast melee combat with stealth and Wolverine’s heightened senses. The announced journey spans settings inspired by the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo and Madripoor.
That is a clear character-led pitch, but it should not be mistaken for a complete account of the game’s systems. Sony’s announcement does not establish that Wolverine lacks exploration, progression choices or other features; it simply puts Logan’s story and action at the forefront.

Different creative bets—and different platform access
The platform split is concrete. CONTROL Resonant launched September 24, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Remedy said a Mac version via Steam and the App Store would follow later in 2026. Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide September 15, 2026, exclusively on PS5. Sony lists Standard and Digital Deluxe editions.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a player choosing where to play, Resonant has the broader announced platform range, while Wolverine requires a PS5. Those facts show different release footprints; they do not establish why either studio or publisher made its platform decisions.

Remedy has also published PS5 mode targets. They are the studio’s stated targets, not independent benchmark results:
- PS5: Performance mode targets 60 fps at 1440p; Quality mode targets 30 fps at 2160p.
- PS5 Pro: Performance targets 60 fps at 2160p; Quality targets 30 fps at 2160p with ray tracing; Balanced targets 40 fps at 2160p with ray tracing on a 120 Hz-compatible display.
These figures describe CONTROL Resonant’s listed PS5 modes. They do not provide a basis for inferring Wolverine’s frame rate. Insomniac has said a comprehensive list of Wolverine’s accessibility options would be available at launch, but the cited announcement does not enumerate those options.
Does this pair prove gaming is changing?
No. Two high-profile games can illustrate different priorities, but they cannot establish an industry-wide direction. Remedy’s own description supports the case for a sequel expanding its world structure and emphasizing player choice. Sony’s description supports the case for a focused, character-led action adventure on one console. The broader interpretation—that these represent what gaming can be versus what it is becoming—is an opinion built on that contrast, not a fact proven by the announcements.

Critical reaction should be kept similarly precise. One September 2026 Creative Bloq review praised Wolverine’s visuals while criticizing what the reviewer considered safe design and repetitive combat. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not evidence of a critical consensus. Without comparative play evidence or broader review data, it is too soon to claim that one game is more innovative, more substantial or more representative of the medium.
The fairest way to read the comparison
Read the pair as two distinct creative and commercial bets. Resonant makes its case through broader zones, optional discoveries, supernatural movement and stated player choice, with releases announced across several platforms. Wolverine makes its case through Logan’s story, a signature mix of melee and stealth, and a PS5-exclusive release. The contrast is meaningful because it shows different ways to frame a major action game—not because one title can stand in for the future of the entire medium.
