It covered Marionette and FirefoxDriver, FlynnID’s Android/Grid configuration, a Geb tutorial, and a talk about proxies and executors. Those notes describe the tools and discussion of 2012, not current compatibility guidance.
What was in A Smattering of Selenium #106?
Goucher’s July 31, 2012 post collected four Selenium-related items. Its opening line was: “In case you are curious, the train just went past my old neighbourhood.” The original post is available at A Smattering of Selenium #106.

Marionette and FirefoxDriver
The post characterized Marionette as “the future of the Firefox driver.” That is a 2012 description, not a statement about Firefox automation today.

It noted a FlynnID 0.2 configuration-format change relevant to attaching Android devices to Selenium Grid. The post does not establish whether that approach works with current Grid releases or Android devices.

Geb and the Page Object pattern
Goucher linked a tutorial about Geb, a Groovy browser-automation tool, and its use of the Page Object pattern. The link is useful as part of the roundup’s historical record; check the tutorial and project documentation for present-day instructions before adopting it.
Proxy & Executor
The roundup also pointed to materials for a talk Goucher had given in San Francisco, San Jose, and Toronto: slides, video, and notes about Proxy & Executor.

What is the current Selenium release context?
The historical post should be kept separate from current release information. SeleniumHQ’s GitHub release page identifies Selenium 4.50.0 as the latest release, dated September 30, 2026. Its listed changes include WebDriver BiDi work across bindings and relative locator support in Java and .NET.
There is a version discrepancy across Selenium’s official pages: the downloads page lists 4.49.0 as stable across the core language bindings and Grid. Before updating, verify the package page for the language binding you use; do not assume the release listing and stable-version listing are synchronized.
The preceding Selenium 4.49 announcement, dated September 9, 2026, covers JavaScript, Ruby, Python, .NET, Java, and Grid. It provides release context but does not make 4.49.0 the latest release at the dates above.
Trying Selenium Grid today
The old FlynnID note is not enough to guide a current Android/Grid setup. For a basic standalone Grid, use Selenium’s official getting-started guide, which lists Java 11 or higher, an installed browser, and browser drivers as prerequisites. Selenium Manager can configure drivers automatically.
Rank #4
- Install Java 11 or higher and a browser on the machine that will run the standalone server.
- Download the Selenium Server jar using the official downloads page.
- Start the server with
java -jar selenium-server-4.49.0.jar standalone, replacing the filename with the jar you actually downloaded. - Configure your test’s RemoteWebDriver to use
http://localhost:4444as the Grid endpoint.
The command’s jar version must match the file on disk. This basic flow is for standalone Grid; it does not validate FlynnID, Android-device attachment, or a multi-node deployment.
Capture a page without setting up a browser
If your goal is to save a clean website screenshot rather than automate an interaction sequence, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the API accepts a URL and can also be configured for options such as full-page capture, CSS selectors, viewport, and output format.

Or skip the browser setup:
For a WebP shot of a page, use this cURL request. Replace the URL as needed and supply your ScreenshotNeo API key; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo to start with 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
