A little DIY photo booth can turn a camera, a preview screen and a button into a personal gift: press once, follow the prompts, and make a portrait to keep. The cozy part is not a special technical feature; it comes from shaping the booth around the person who will use it. The title does not establish a specific recipient, occasion or parts list, so the build choices below are examples rather than claims about one finished booth.
Start with the moment you want the booth to create
Before choosing parts, decide what the recipient should experience. Is the booth meant for a quiet portrait at home, a playful sequence with guests, or a keepsake station at a celebration? That decision guides the practical choices: whether it needs a large, obvious button, a screen that gives instructions, flattering light, local photo storage or printed pictures.

There is no single required enclosure or component list. The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s All-Seeing Pi project names a Camera Module, monitor, two tactile buttons, breadboard and jumper wires as building blocks. Its instructions also allow for replacing small buttons with larger ones. See the All-Seeing Pi project.

Camera and preview
A camera captures the image; a screen or other preview helps people see where to stand and understand what the booth is doing. PhotoboothProject documents support for Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5 running 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or Trixie, with Raspberry Pi camera modules, gphoto2-compatible DSLR cameras or webcams. Check its current documentation before buying parts or installing software, since supported hardware and software requirements can change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Touchscreen or physical button
A touchscreen can combine the preview and controls; a separate button makes the action immediately visible and easy to understand. A Raspberry Pi Foundation project uses tactile buttons, while a separate build documented by Raspberry Pi Official Magazine used an arcade button. The physical design should suit the people using it: a large button can be more inviting than a small control, but it is an option, not a requirement.
Lighting and enclosure
Lighting affects how faces appear, especially indoors. In one wedding booth project, Jack Barker used white LED strip lighting and later added a wood diffuser. He also built with plywood; these are choices from that particular project, not a universal recipe. An enclosure can make a booth feel finished and protect its components, but it adds cutting, mounting and finishing work. A separate Raspberry Pi project describes wooden panels and 3D-printed mounts for the camera, monitor and arcade button. Read the wedding booth account and the wooden-panel project.

Plan the capture flow before adding extras
A booth feels simple when a guest can tell what to do next. A basic interaction can be: invite the person into the frame, show a preview, let them trigger the capture, and save the result. If the software supports it, prompts, a countdown, multiple shots or a collage can add personality. Creator DIY Machines described its guest flow this way in a Raspberry Pi Official Magazine feature: “The guests just press the giant arcade button and the photo booth guides them through their own photoshoot sequence,” as reported in the feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPhotoboothProject describes itself as a self-hosted photo booth web app with live preview, collages and printing. Those features can inform a build, but verify current compatibility and setup steps in its project documentation rather than assuming every feature works with every camera or configuration.

Decide whether the booth needs to print
Printing is optional. Digital-only capture avoids printer setup and supplies, while an on-the-spot print gives guests a physical keepsake. The wedding-booth builder Jack Barker planned to include a printer but dropped it from the project scope, illustrating that a booth can remain useful without one.
PhotoboothProject’s Debian installation instructions call for CUPS when printing and list Node.js 20.15.0 or later and npm 10.7.0 or later for that documented installation path. These version requirements can change; consult the current installation instructions before setup. Printer configuration may also depend on the printer and driver. Red Hat’s tutorial describes one author’s setup that required a postcard driver setting; that is a case-specific example, not a setting to apply to every printer. See the Red Hat tutorial.

Make an offline plan—and treat network access carefully
Local saving can make a booth practical at a venue without Wi-Fi, but offline operation and online backup are separate requirements. In his wedding project, Barker said the booth could operate without venue Wi-Fi, while a live online backup was unavailable at that venue. That is one builder’s experience, not a guarantee for every configuration. If you need to preserve images, decide where they will be stored and how you will retrieve or back them up before the event.
PhotoboothProject warns that its software is not hardened against targeted attacks and advises against exposing it to the internet without substantial modifications. Keep a booth on a trusted local setup unless you understand and have addressed that security risk. Read the project’s security guidance.

Keep the build within the gift’s purpose
A contained first version needs only the interaction the recipient will enjoy: camera, preview or instructions, a way to trigger capture, and a place to save images. Add lighting if the room needs it; add an enclosure if it improves usability or presentation; add printing only if physical copies matter enough to justify its extra configuration.
For context, Raspberry Pi Official Magazine reported that Jack Barker spent 20 hours building his wedding booth, spread across weekends. Barker also said he had received hire quotes upwards of A$500 (£300). Both figures describe his circa-2017 experience and should not be treated as a current build-time estimate or market price. His project account shows how a specific occasion shaped one booth’s scope; a personal gift can be simpler or more elaborate depending on the moment it is meant to create.
