A backup NAS on separate hardware can reduce the chance that one device failure takes out both your working data and its backup. It does not, by itself, make the backup independent: if the same compromised account or reachable network can erase both copies, they may still fail together. Trust comes from layering separation with an offline or off-site copy and proving that you can restore what matters.
What separate hardware protects—and what it does not
Putting a backup target on a different physical device addresses one failure mode: a fault that destroys the primary NAS does not automatically destroy the other machine. But a second device is not necessarily a second, independent backup. If the lab and backup NAS share accounts, credentials, or network access, a compromise may reach both. CISA recommends offline backups because ransomware can target backups that remain accessible, and it calls for regular checks of backup availability and integrity. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends maintaining offline, encrypted backups of critical data and regularly testing them.

Think in terms of what each copy is meant to survive, not simply how many boxes are on the rack. A local second NAS can help with a failed primary device; a disconnected copy limits exposure to network compromise; an off-site copy addresses events that affect the whole home, such as theft or fire. These are complementary protections, not interchangeable ones.
Use the 3-2-1 rule as a design check
US-CERT’s backup-options paper describes the 3-2-1 guideline: keep three copies of important data, including the primary; use two types of media; and keep one copy off-site. It is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee that any particular setup will survive every failure. The US-CERT paper hosted by CISA discusses options including remote cloud backup.

| Copy | What it can help you recover from | Question to check |
|---|---|---|
| Primary data on the working NAS | Normal use; it is the source being protected, not a backup by itself. | What data and services depend on this system? |
| Separate local backup target | A failure of the primary device, if the backup target and its stored data remain intact. | Can the same accounts or network paths used by the lab alter or delete this copy? |
| Offline or off-site copy | A network compromise or a local event, depending on whether the copy is disconnected or physically elsewhere. | Can you retrieve it if the lab, NAS, or home network is unavailable? |
A single copy may serve more than one role, but it cannot be both safely disconnected and immediately reachable for routine network restores. Consider the likely failure it is intended to survive and the practical steps needed to retrieve it.
Choose a backup path you can maintain
Separate NAS on the local network
A second NAS can provide convenient local restores and avoids making the primary device the only place your data lives. Its limitation is reachability: if a compromised system or account can access and delete its files, physical separation alone will not isolate the backup.

External drive kept disconnected
An external hard drive is a straightforward way to create a copy that is not continuously exposed to the network. CISA advises disconnecting an external drive when it is not actively being used for backup, because a connected drive may be reachable by ransomware. CISA’s device-protection guidance also advises securing encryption recovery keys and passwords. A drive still needs safe storage and a workable routine for updating it; it is not an off-site copy if it stays in the same place as the NAS.

A copy stored elsewhere can address local disasters that affect both the primary system and nearby backup media. Cloud storage is one possible route, but the choice of service, access method, retention, and restore process matters. A nominal off-site copy is useful only if you can retrieve it when the home lab or home network is down.

Back up the ingredients for a rebuild
Files alone may not be enough if the goal is to bring services back after a serious failure. CISA recommends keeping recovery images and applicable source code or executables. Save the configuration and other rebuild materials you actually need, not just user files. A system image can speed recovery, but CISA notes that an image may not work on different hardware or platforms. The joint CISA, FBI, and HHS advisory also recommends gold images, backup hardware, and applicable software.
Encryption can protect backup media, but it creates a recovery dependency: preserve the keys and passwords somewhere accessible if the lab itself is unavailable. If the only copy of a recovery key lives on the system being restored, encryption can make the backup inaccessible at the moment you need it.

Test that the backup can restore
A successful scheduled job or a green dashboard status shows that a process ran; it does not prove that the resulting files are complete, readable, or sufficient to rebuild a service. CISA calls for testing backup availability and integrity in a disaster-recovery scenario. Set a cadence that you can sustain, and test the actual recovery path rather than only inspecting job logs.
- Restore selected files to a separate destination. Do not overwrite the originals. Open the restored files and check that they are intact.
- Test the intended system recovery. If you expect to restore services, use the saved configuration, image, software, and executables needed for that process.
- Check access without relying on the failed system. Confirm that you can reach the backup and retrieve encryption credentials if the primary NAS or lab is unavailable.
- Record what worked and what did not. A test is only useful if its result leads to a fix—for example, adding missing configuration or changing where recovery keys are stored.
The test interval and the exact restore procedure are choices for your environment; CISA’s guidance supports regular testing but does not prescribe a home-lab schedule.

Decide whether your setup is independent enough
- Device failure: Is there a copy on different hardware?
- Compromised credentials or ransomware: Is at least one backup unreachable or offline when it is not being updated?
- Fire, theft, or another local event: Is a copy stored off-site?
- NAS or lab unavailable: Can you retrieve the data and recovery materials without depending on that system?
- Restore failure: Have you actually restored files and, if needed, rebuilt a service?
If every copy is always reachable through the same environment, the setup may offer useful redundancy against a device failure while remaining vulnerable to a shared compromise. Separate hardware is a meaningful layer; isolation, location, recovery materials, and tested restores determine whether it is a dependable backup.
