Short answer: Yes. Perceptive, a Boston dental-technology startup, said its AI-guided robotic system completed a first-in-human, fully automated dental procedure in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 2024. But that milestone does not mean a general-purpose robot dentist is approved, commercially available, or replacing dentists. The company’s description covers automated tooth cutting within a supervised clinical workflow, not every step of diagnosis, anesthesia, crown placement, and follow-up.
What Perceptive actually announced
On July 30, 2024, Perceptive announced what it called the “world’s first fully automated dental procedure on a human.” STAT reported that the first patient procedure took place in Barranquilla, Colombia. Wider headline coverage followed in early August, including Futurism’s report.

Perceptive described the procedure as robotic tooth cutting for restorative dentistry. The company’s release discusses applications such as preparing a tooth for a crown, while the available coverage does not establish that the robot independently completed an entire crown pathway—from diagnosis and anesthesia through design, fitting, cementation, and postoperative care.
“World’s first” is Perceptive’s designation, not an independently established historical consensus. The announcement also does not provide a complete safety dataset, patient follow-up, or independently audited outcome report. No injury was identified in the contemporaneous reports, but the absence of a reported injury is not proof of long-term safety.

How the system is supposed to work
- Three-dimensional scan: A handheld intraoral scanner uses optical-coherence-based imaging to map the tooth and surrounding structures.
- AI analysis and planning: Software analyzes the scan and generates a treatment plan.
- Robotic execution: A robotic arm carries out the planned cutting motion on the tooth.
- Clinical oversight: A dentist remains responsible for selecting the patient, confirming the diagnosis and plan, obtaining consent, managing anesthesia and infection control, and responding to problems.
Perceptive said its imaging can work through fluids and reveal information below the gum line and beneath the tooth surface. It also claimed the approach can provide more detail than conventional two-dimensional dental X-rays. Those are company claims, not a general finding that optical-coherence imaging is superior for every dental indication.
What “fully autonomous” does—and does not—mean
In this context, “autonomous” most plausibly means that the robot executed a preplanned tooth-cutting motion without a dentist continuously hand-guiding the drill. It does not necessarily mean that the machine chose the complete treatment, operated without a dentist in the room, or could handle arbitrary anatomy and complications.

Autonomous cutting is therefore a narrower claim than an autonomous dentist. Even a successful cutting module would not remove the need for medical-history review, informed consent, pain control, sterilization, communication, prosthesis design, laboratory work, and follow-up.
What the 15-minute claim covers
Perceptive said tasks such as crown placement could be completed in about 15 minutes, compared with a conventional process involving two visits of at least one hour each. This is a projected workflow advantage from the company, not a published head-to-head clinical trial.
The 15-minute figure may describe the robotic preparation step rather than the entire patient experience. A crown still involves diagnosis, tooth preparation, digital design or an impression, fabrication, fit and bite checks, placement, and often anesthesia, setup, sterilization, and dentist review. A shorter procedure is not automatically a safer or better one.

Independent reporting
STAT reported the Colombian patient procedure and noted that Perceptive had not released the clinical data it would ultimately need for an FDA submission. Read the report at STAT.
What had not been disclosed
- A peer-reviewed clinical paper or a defined sample size beyond the reported first patient.
- A conventional-treatment control group.
- Complication, retreatment, pain, pulp-vitality, crown-fit, or long-term follow-up data.
- Millimeter-level cutting accuracy and precision measurements.
- A registered clinical protocol or detailed human-factors and cybersecurity assessment.
- FDA clearance, authorization, or approval.
- A public commercial price.
Do the accuracy numbers prove the robot is precise?
No. A Perceptive release quoted a Harvard School of Dental Medicine professor saying its caries-detection approach exceeded 90% accuracy, compared with approximately 40% for 2D X-rays. Those figures concern an imaging and diagnostic claim—not the robot’s ability to cut a tooth safely—and were presented in a company release rather than an independently verified comparison in the available material.
To interpret such a number, readers would need to know the reference standard, number and type of teeth, imaging conditions, patient population, prospective-validation method, and whether the X-ray comparison was clinically fair. Diagnostic accuracy cannot be substituted for robotic cutting accuracy.

At the time of the 2024 announcement, Perceptive said the robotic system and scanner were still under development and had not been reviewed by the FDA or another regulator. STAT reported that the company’s CEO estimated it was roughly five years from an FDA submission. A demonstration or investigational procedure is not permission to market a device.

FDA “clearance” and FDA “approval” are different regulatory pathways, and authorization for an imaging component would not automatically authorize autonomous tissue cutting. Regulatory authorization also would not by itself prove that the system is safer or more effective than conventional dentistry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety questions that must be answered
The mouth is a moving, wet, confined environment. A credible clinical program would need evidence for:
- Movement from breathing, swallowing, coughing, anxiety, tremors, jaw spasms, or inability to remain still.
- Misregistration between the scan and the physical tooth.
- Imaging degradation from saliva, blood, reflective restorations, limited visibility, or an open-mouth time limit.
- Incorrect segmentation of enamel, dentin, pulp, gum tissue, or decay.
- Software, model, mechanical, tool-breakage, overheating, and excessive-cutting failures.
- Emergency-stop reliability and safe recovery if the robot stops mid-procedure.
- Injury to pulp, nerves, gums, dental fibers, or the airway.
- Cybersecurity controls preventing unauthorized software or treatment-plan changes.
- Responsibility when a dentist accepts an AI-generated plan or when an update changes system behavior.
Perceptive said it had rigorously tested the system for safety despite patient movement, but the reviewed release does not provide the test protocol or results.

Where autonomous dentistry could help
If validated in larger studies, narrowly defined automation could offer more repeatable cutting, shorter chair time, detailed three-dimensional records, and less dependence on manual drilling for repetitive restorative work. Optical-coherence imaging might reduce radiation exposure for indications where it can replace some X-ray use. Those are potential benefits, not established outcomes.
Lower costs or wider access cannot be assumed. They depend on equipment and service costs, consumables, training, staffing, reimbursement, maintenance, and whether clinical outcomes remain good across diverse patients.
How it compares with existing dental robotics
| Category | What it does | Human control |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional dentistry | Flexible diagnosis and treatment using hand instruments and powered tools | Dentist directly controls the procedure |
| Robot-assisted or guided dentistry | Navigation, positional guidance, or haptic limits for procedures such as implant placement | Dentist remains in control |
| AI imaging and planning | Assists detection, measurement, documentation, or treatment planning | No physical operation on the patient |
| Perceptive’s reported system | AI-planned robotic tooth cutting in a reported first-in-human demonstration | Exact supervision and emergency controls were not publicly detailed |
These categories are not interchangeable. A robot that guides an implant drill is not the same as a system that plans and cuts a tooth without continuous hand guidance. For comparison, Neocis describes its robot-assisted implant platform at neocis.com; it is not evidence that Perceptive’s restorative workflow is clinically available.

What this means for patients now
This report does not mean you can book a robot dentist today. Patients with children, severe dental anxiety, swallowing problems, neurological movement disorders, active infection or bleeding, deep decay near the pulp, unusual anatomy, metal restorations, or emergency needs would present especially important validation challenges. Those cases require established clinical judgment and contingency planning.
As of the evidence supplied for this article, Perceptive’s achievement is best understood as an important first-in-human demonstration of automated tooth cutting—not proof of a safe, FDA-authorized, affordable, general-purpose autonomous dentist.
