RainCheck proposed an online-to-offline (O2O) commerce platform: shoppers could discover or save products online, then visit physical stores, while merchants connected product, inventory, payment and loyalty systems. Its Raintoken, also referred to as RAIN, was intended to make rewards transferable across participating loyalty programs. Those are historical product claims, not evidence of a functioning, widely adopted network today.
What RainCheck was designed to do
The 2018 TechBullion review described RainCheck as a bridge between online shopping and in-store commerce. Rather than treating a web visit and a store purchase as unrelated events, the concept aimed to link digital product discovery with a later physical shopping trip. The review also described an aggregated loyalty-rewards layer built around Raintoken. TechBullion’s August 27, 2018 review is a useful account of the proposal, but it is not an independent technical audit.

The proposed value for shoppers was a more continuous path from browsing to buying, plus the possibility of using rewards across more than one participating loyalty scheme. For merchants, the pitch was a way to connect online interest with store activity and to use product, location and loyalty data together. These were intended benefits; the available sources do not independently establish merchant adoption or measured sales impact.
How the proposed platform would work
RainCheck’s co-founder Cameron Wall described a broader software stack in a 2019 interview: product and inventory feeds, wishlists, payments and wallets, location or proximity features, point-of-sale (POS) and card-linked offers, analytics, and loyalty modules. In practical terms, the concept depended on retailer systems and payment data as well as its token layer. - Products and inventory enter the system. Retailers would provide feeds so products and availability could be represented in the digital experience.
- A shopper discovers or saves an item. A wishlist or similar online action could express interest before a store visit.
- Location and retail integrations connect the journey. Proximity information and POS or card-linked integrations were part of the described stack, with the aim of associating online intent and offline activity.
- Payments and loyalty complete the experience. The platform proposed payment and wallet functions alongside loyalty modules, with Raintoken intended to support transferable rewards.
The key technical test for an O2O platform is whether it can reliably attribute an offline purchase to the earlier online interaction, ideally at product or SKU level. Wall said SKU-level card-linked offers requiring POS integration were still being built in 2019. He also said the Stellar wallet was under development. That means the interview documents an evolving roadmap, not proof that those functions were fully shipped or operating at scale.
What RAIN was supposed to add
The token story centered on loyalty portability. RainCheck proposed Raintoken/RAIN as a mechanism for aggregating rewards and allowing value to move across participating loyalty programs. The promise was convenience: rather than keeping value isolated in many unrelated schemes, a customer could potentially exchange or use rewards through a shared system.

That promise depends on details that are essential to a real rewards network: which programs participate, how points convert into token value, what redemption restrictions apply, and who bears the costs or risk of conversion. The cited materials describe the intended role, but do not establish a live network’s participation, conversion rules, redemption limits, or independent performance.
How decentralised was the platform?
RAIN’s intended Stellar role does not, by itself, make the end-to-end shopping service decentralised. The described system also depended on cloud software, retailer product and inventory feeds, card networks, POS integrations, and merchant participation. Those are operational dependencies outside a token ledger.

A fair assessment therefore separates the token’s proposed ledger function from the commerce infrastructure needed to make the service useful. Even if a token transfer were recorded on a blockchain, product availability, store purchases, card-linked attribution and loyalty redemption would still rely on the systems and organizations supplying that information. The sources describe this hybrid architecture, but do not provide an independent audit of its decentralisation or security.

Neither source is independent evidence of sustained live usage. The 2018 review attributes an average transaction time of “around 5 seconds” to the platform. It does not provide an independent measurement or methodology, so this should be treated as a claim in that review, not as a verified performance benchmark. The original review is the source for that figure.

The available evidence does not establish whether the historic RainCheck/RAIN platform still operates, whether its wallet or token remains supported, or whether merchants and consumers currently use it. A Cloud Ventures portfolio page labels RainCheck an exit, but that label does not answer those operational questions.
There is also a naming ambiguity. The current Raincheck.co homepage describes a multi-channel customer-service engagement platform. The sources reviewed do not establish that this product is the same business as the historical Stellar/RAIN commerce project, so the two should not be conflated.
