That did not mean a hurricane or landfall was certain: the NHC said specific impacts along the northern Gulf Coast were still too early to determine.
What the NHC said about Gulf disturbance AL92
In its 8 a.m. EDT outlook on October 6, the NHC said showers and thunderstorms were organizing around a broad low-pressure area in the southwestern Gulf, designated AL92. It expected the system to continue developing and potentially become a tropical depression within about a day as it drifted east. The formation chance was 90% through both 48 hours and seven days. By its 2 p.m. EDT outlook, satellite imagery and surface observations showed improved organization and falling surface pressure. The NHC said advisories were likely later that day or night if the trend continued, and raised the chance of tropical cyclone formation to near 100% through both 48 hours and seven days. Those percentages concerned formation of a tropical cyclone—not hurricane strength, a particular track, or landfall.

The NHC expected the disturbance to turn north or northeast toward the northern Gulf Coast by the end of the week. But in both October 6 outlooks, it said it was too early to determine specific impacts. It advised people with interests from Florida’s Panhandle to Louisiana to monitor the system.

An October 6 report by Gizmodo described forecast-model scenarios spanning possible landfalls from Biloxi, Mississippi, to Florida’s Panhandle, as well as a wide range of potential intensity. Those were modeled possibilities reported by Gizmodo, not a settled NHC forecast. The report said the system would be named Isaias if it became a named storm.
Why the October 8 date matters to the hurricane record
Gizmodo reported that October 8, 1905, is the latest date on record for the first Atlantic hurricane in a season, attributing the record to the National Weather Service. The record concern is conditional: the 2026 system would have to reach hurricane strength after October 8 to set a later date, according to that report. The historical record page itself is not linked here, so the date is presented with that attribution.

A tropical depression, a named tropical storm, and a hurricane are distinct stages. Merely forming—or receiving a name—would not break a record for the latest first hurricane. A system must attain hurricane strength for the record to apply.
How a below-normal season forecast fits in
NOAA’s May 21, 2026 outlook put the chance of a below-normal Atlantic season at 55%, with a 70%-probability range of 8–14 named storms, 3–6 hurricanes, and 1–3 major hurricanes. In its August 6 update, NOAA raised the below-normal probability to 75% and gave ranges of 7–13 named storms, 2–6 hurricanes, and 0–2 major hurricanes. By that update, Arthur and Bertha had formed, and no hurricane had formed. NOAA’s August 2026 outlook update

These were forecasts of overall seasonal activity, not predictions about whether a particular community would be struck. NOAA’s May outlook anticipated El Niño’s development; its August update said El Niño had emerged in June and increased wind shear, which tends to inhibit storm formation or strengthening. That broad influence can help explain a quieter season outlook, but it does not guarantee an inactive season or safety for any one coast. NOAA’s May 2026 outlook
