A recent update just brought AV1 support to your Android phone

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A recent update adding AV1 support is a good sign: it means your Android phone’s media stack can decode AV1 video, a codec known for efficient compression. In practice, that can mean better quality at similar bandwidth—or similar quality at lower data use—depending on which apps and services choose to stream AV1.

But AV1 support alone doesn’t guarantee every app will use it. AV1 playback depends on the app, the streaming manifest, network conditions, device-specific decoding paths, and sometimes even region or plan constraints.

This guide covers what AV1 support really means, how to verify it on your device, how to make popular apps use it, and what to do when AV1 doesn’t appear.

What AV1 support on Android actually changes

AV1 (AOMedia Video 1) is a modern video codec designed to improve compression efficiency. When your phone gains AV1 decode support, it can receive and decode AV1 streams smoothly when an app serves them in that format.

  • One Account, All Devices: Sync with your Google account to keep playlists, favorites, and subscriptions the same across phone, tablet, and player

There are three important expectations you can set:

  • Decode support: Your phone can play AV1 video without relying entirely on slower software decoding.
  • App control: Apps still decide whether to request AV1 or fall back to HEVC (H.265) or H.264.
  • Conditions matter: AV1 may appear only at certain resolutions/bitrates, on Wi-Fi vs mobile data, or after the app’s internal quality logic updates.

Prerequisites before you expect AV1 everywhere

Before you test, verify a few things that commonly block AV1 usage.

1) Your device update is completed

Confirm your phone finished the over-the-air update and rebooted. Some media components update in two stages (download + optimize), and AV1 decode paths may not activate until after a full reboot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) Apps are updated

AV1 adoption depends on the app’s playback stack. Update the apps you care about—especially streaming clients.

3) Network and quality settings allow it

On many platforms, AV1 might only be offered for higher tiers or certain playback profiles. Your “data saver” mode can also force lower bandwidth formats.

How to check whether your Android phone really supports AV1

There are two layers to verification: codec capability (what the phone can decode) and practical playback (what apps actually deliver).

Check system codec capabilities

On Android, codec support is exposed through the platform’s media APIs, but there’s no single universal “AV1 support: ON” toggle in Settings for every manufacturer. The fastest route is using a codec-checking app or a player that surfaces codec details.

Confirm AV1 playback in real apps

System capability is one thing; confirming AV1 is another. The most reliable check is to play content where AV1 is known to be available, then read the app’s playback details.

For YouTube, the player often shows a quality indicator and can reveal whether the stream is using AV1 indirectly through quality/labeling in supported environments. For other apps, look for an “Advanced” or “Stats for nerds” style panel.

Use developer-style verification (optional)

If you’re comfortable with advanced tools, you can validate whether the decoder path is hardware or software. The exact method varies by Android version, OEM skins, and available developer options, but the principle is consistent: verify the active decoder when playing an AV1 clip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When this matters: some devices list AV1 support but still decode AV1 in software for certain profiles, which can cause battery drain or dropped frames at higher resolutions.

How to use AV1 effectively after the update

Once AV1 decode is available, your job is to (1) ensure apps have the option enabled, (2) provide conditions where AV1 is likely, and (3) validate behavior with a consistent test.

Streaming (YouTube and other platforms)

Most major streaming services only switch to AV1 when the app decides it’s beneficial and supported. Here’s what to do.

  1. Update the streaming app from Google Play.
  2. Disable aggressive data saver modes in the app and in Android data controls.
  3. Test on Wi-Fi first with consistent signal.
  4. Select the highest available quality (for example, 1080p or 2160p if offered).
  5. Play a known AV1-available video and review the playback details.

If you see AV1 in playback stats or if the bitrate/quality profile matches AV1 behavior (with stable playback), you’ve confirmed practical use.

Local playback (files on-device)

If you want to test AV1 without relying on streaming decisions, use local files.

Guardians are nevertheless encouraged to keep an eye on and set limits for their children's screen time.
  1. Install a media player that supports AV1 (VLC is commonly used for broad codec support).
  2. Move an AV1 sample file (for example, a .mp4 or .mkv containing AV1 video) to your phone.
  3. Open the file and check codec info from the player’s details screen.
  4. Try both 1080p and a higher-resolution sample to see whether hardware decode kicks in under load.

Local testing is also useful to catch file-specific issues (profile, HDR metadata, bit depth) that streaming services may avoid or transcode differently.

Sharing and receiving AV1 files

AV1 support on your phone is great for receiving files that others export as AV1, but the ecosystem isn’t uniform. When you share AV1 locally, the recipient’s player may not support it.

  1. Confirm your target app (recipient’s device/player) supports AV1.
  2. Consider fallback formats if you’re sharing with people on older phones (HEVC or H.264).
  3. Use consistent container formats that your player handles well (MP4 is often safer than obscure MKV edge cases).

Encoding and uploading: recording in AV1 vs downloading AV1

Be careful with expectations: many Android updates focus on AV1 decoding, not AV1 encoding. Some phones can decode AV1 but cannot efficiently encode AV1 with the usual camera pipeline.

Recording/encoding options on Android

When encoding support exists, it typically shows up in one of these places:

  • Camera app modes (rare for AV1 in consumer camera UX)
  • Video editors/exporters that include AV1 as an export codec
  • Developer workflows using Android media APIs or third-party encoder apps

If your update message only mentions “AV1 playback” or “AV1 decoder,” assume encoding may still be missing or limited.

When apps won’t use AV1 even if your phone can

This is common. Apps often avoid AV1 for practical reasons:

  • Server-side availability: the service might not offer AV1 renditions for your region or your specific video.
  • DRM/streaming pipeline: the player chooses from a set of renditions and may prefer HEVC for compatibility.
  • Quality heuristics: if the app thinks HEVC gives better stability on your connection, it won’t switch.
  • Battery policy: some apps constrain codec choice when device thermals are high.

Performance and battery expectations

Whether AV1 feels “faster” or “slower” depends less on the codec name and more on whether your device uses a hardware decoder and how the app configures playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware decode vs software decode

If AV1 decode is hardware-accelerated, playback should stay smooth even at 4K. If the phone falls back to software decode (or mixed paths), you might see:

  • HDMI - Connect your TV and audio systems for high quality audio and an enhanced entertainment experience when watching your favorite movies, shows and sports
  • Short playback stalls during segment switching
  • Increased battery drain
  • Thermal throttling over time

That’s why verifying real playback behavior matters more than reading a generic spec sheet.

Why power use can look different by app

Streaming apps don’t just decode video—they also run overlays, scaling, and audio pipelines. Some apps might add extra processing for AV1 streams (or for HDR tonemapping), changing power usage compared to HEVC.

Troubleshooting when AV1 doesn’t show up

If you updated and verified capability but AV1 still doesn’t appear in playback, work through issues in a predictable order: app settings → app version → network/quality → cache → file/profile compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube or streaming apps never show AV1

  1. Update the app and restart it.
  2. Turn off Data Saver for that app (check both Android Data Saver and the app’s own setting).
  3. Test on Wi-Fi with strong signal, then test again on mobile data.
  4. Clear cache for the app (Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage > Clear cache).
  5. Try a different video (some content won’t have AV1 renditions).
  6. Wait 24 hours for quality/manifest behavior to stabilize after large app updates (CDNs and client experiments can take time).

If none of this helps, your device may have AV1 support but not for the specific playback profile used by that service at your selected resolution.

AV1 file won’t play locally

  1. Confirm the container and audio codec. A file can have AV1 video but an audio track your player can’t decode.
  2. Try another player (VLC is a strong first check).
  3. Test a known-good sample file you downloaded specifically for AV1 testing.
  4. Check for HDR metadata issues. Some players struggle with certain HDR signaling.
  5. Reduce resolution and re-test (e.g., 1080p to 720p) to isolate hardware decode limits.

Playback stutters or audio desyncs

  1. Close background apps to reduce CPU contention.
  2. Re-download the stream or switch networks if you’re on streaming.
  3. Use a local file test to determine whether the issue is decoding or network throughput.
  4. Lower playback quality temporarily to confirm whether it’s bitrate-related.

If stutter happens only on high bitrate AV1 content, it points to decode-path limitations (hardware vs software) or thermals.

Colors look wrong or video appears too dim

AV1 content often includes HDR metadata (or different color range signaling). If your player or display pipeline isn’t handling that metadata correctly, you can see crushed blacks or washed highlights.

  1. In your player settings, look for Color range, HDR mode, or Video effects toggles.
  2. Try another player to compare behavior.
  3. If the file is yours, re-encode with consistent color metadata using a reliable encoder workflow.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “AV1 supported” means “AV1 will be selected”. Apps choose renditions; you’re just improving the set of renditions your device can handle efficiently.
  • Testing only one video once. Try at least two resolutions and two networks.
  • Ignoring app updates. A new phone codec doesn’t change old player binaries.
  • Testing in the background. Some players switch behavior when the screen is off or when Battery Saver triggers.

AV1 vs HEVC (H.265) vs H.264: what to expect

Here’s the practical comparison most people care about: quality per data and compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Codec Typical advantage Where you’ll notice it Compatibility reality
AV1 Better compression efficiency Similar quality at lower bitrate; smoother high-resolution streaming when bandwidth is constrained Improving fast, but not universal in older players/devices
HEVC (H.265) Good compression, widely supported High-quality streaming without AV1; common in many Android devices and media ecosystems Often a safer fallback than AV1 on older devices
H.264 Maximum compatibility Basic playback everywhere; may require higher bitrates for similar quality Works nearly everywhere, but less efficient

Your AV1 update mainly shifts the trade-off in your favor for services that offer AV1. If a service can deliver AV1 renditions at a lower bitrate for the same perceived quality, you’ll likely see data savings.

FAQs

Do I need to change any settings to enable AV1?

Usually, no. AV1 support is passive: your phone can decode it when an app requests an AV1 stream. However, you may need to adjust app settings like Data Saver or playback quality to encourage AV1 selection.

Will AV1 always use less data than HEVC?

Not always. Even when AV1 is available, streaming services may pick different target bitrates and resolutions based on your connection and device. To verify data savings, compare actual playback statistics in the app or track your data usage over controlled tests.

How can I tell if my phone is decoding AV1 in hardware or software?

That detail is often not exposed directly in standard Settings. The practical workaround is to watch for performance: stable smooth playback and reasonable battery use at high resolution suggest hardware decode, while stutter and rapid battery drain suggest software fallback. Advanced verification requires developer tools or codec-path inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My phone supports AV1, but my friend’s phone can’t play the file. Why?

AV1 decode support isn’t uniform across devices and players. Your friend’s phone or app may not support AV1, or it may support only limited AV1 profiles. Use HEVC or H.264 as a compatibility fallback when sharing.

Could the update have added AV1 but not for all profiles?

Yes. Media support can be partial. A device might decode certain AV1 profiles efficiently and other profiles less reliably. Streaming apps also vary which profiles they use, which is why AV1 might appear for one video and not another.

Bottom Line

An Android update that adds AV1 support is a real capability upgrade—especially for modern streaming services that can offer AV1 renditions. The best results come from verifying playback in real apps, ensuring your streaming settings allow higher quality profiles, and testing with a couple of known AV1 sources.

If AV1 doesn’t show up, don’t assume the update failed. More often, it’s app-side selection, network constraints, or a mismatch between the AV1 profile your phone can decode efficiently and the one the service is requesting.
